Sangean Long Distance DAB FM AM Radio $149 Free Click & Collect @ Dick Smith

50MUM

Hi I have never seen such a radio like this before. Even though it is at the hefty price tag of $199 less $50 to a total of $149 I think it is a very good deal. Original coupon code post

There are no other radios on the market that have the trifecta of radio bands apart from your DAB car stereos. That I know of anyway. I'll probably get half a dozen ozbargainers telling me otherwise and if you can please do.

The Sangean brand is a premier DAB/radio brand within Australia.

It is a handy radio when travelling as it has backup AM for the talkback lovers out there. Or if you live regionally a option to have DAB when travelling within the CBD.

Looks like there is a DAB/AM/FM Bush for $79 too at Good Guys. This is long range though. Both are good.

    Whats long distance for?

    • Sometimes Long Range Radios can hook up to frequencies overseas or interstate. Not such an interesting feature due to Internet Radio these days. But you get a stronger reception in the country compared to a regular AM receiver radio.

Spin. If it were advertised as a Long distance radio with DAB+ it would be normal spin, but as Long Distance DAB…, for me it had gone into the domain of "Colour TV antennae" [they came in blue, red, yellow and green apparently] and "Digital Ariel" [ Basically any band II/III as used for analogue - they resonate at frequencies, and don't give a wombat's cube about what's in the envelope].

      • Hmm dunno it would definitely be long distance AM. But not possible to be Long Distance DAB+ radio.

Pretty sure it's just the usual 'Long Distance' AM/FM unit they've sold for decades but this one has the added benefit of DAB+ for when you're in DAB range. I don't think they're even claiming that it can do DX DAB+. I'll greenie this because a decent quality non-DAB 'Long Distance' radio has been about this price for 'ever' so the addition of DAB makes this a good deal.

Yep - I didn't "neg" it - but I've usually had no problems picking up [say] NZ MW stations once the sun dips down, given any kind of added antennae, but there are trade-offs between relying on the unit's own internal ferrite/telescopic and AGC to boost the signal, and just hanging a decent length of light-cord off the back and getting a good earth.

Dick Smith do the usual lack of specs tho. Does it have SW? does it have digital SW? I'm trying to chase this up myself. Otherwise $150 is a fair call for what looks like a mono radio that also lets you do away with a tab on the browser…

OK - looks like this one - doesn't look like it is one of theirs with a LI-Po tho :-( AT least there's stereo out.

      Isn't that what everyone does?

You always comment saying any good deals if there are %off deals.

I bought my grandmother one of these (after spending far too long trying to explain that her favourite AM stations were on digital, she still wanted AM capability) and it's actually really good. The reception is great, much better than the Makita portable and Bose crapbox I bought. Sound is real nice too. Useless at any sort of volume obviously, but for having in a shed or small work area it's tops.

Price tag is hefty, but anything with AM is. Worth it if you need a DAB with AM, and with really good reception.
