Thanks fixed
There seems to be a fair bit of confusion with this Celeron N2840 CPU being a dual or quad core. Harvey Norman as well as other online sites quote this as being a Quad core, but Intel confirms it's dual core. I saw this model in person, and can say that for an entry price it is a solid little laptop, good keyboard, removable battery, and solid screen lid built for taking some travelling knocks more than some others.
Battery life should also be good, not sure if the Ram is upgradable, but if your game, the hhd should be able to be swapped out for a ssd for more improvement.not sure if the Ram is upgradable
I think it's upgradeable to 8gb?how much cost for 8gb memory for this laptop?
'bout a hunjy.
@Jake D: aw rightio, a hunjy e-tis lol
from the specs
Processor Speed:
Dual Core 1M Cache, up to 2.58GHzintel website re: Celeron N2840 CPU
http://ark.intel.com/products/82103/Intel-Celeron-Processor-…
And only 7.5W TDP, benchmark tests seem to say about 6.1 under benchmark conditions. That's pretty good, but still only 5 hours battery life apparently.
hmm, still not as good deal as Big W's clearance sale of Dell laptop in previous year - 15.6" monitor, i3 CPU, 4Gb RAM and 500Gb HDD for $200.
Bought 2 of them and returned them big bulky things.
Still great deal for that price. Little thick, but not much more heavy than most 15.6" laptops last year under $1000.
Well that's not wise. Could easily sold them for around $300 on Gumtree..
Will dick smith price match this
I'd like to know this. Is the cashback applicable to DSE's offer as well? They will only price match before cashback.
Does anyone know how many RAM channels this thing has?
The spec sheet for the N2840 says 2, so I'd guess 1 or 2.
I get the feeling it has a single slot. I'd like to be proven wrong though. My HP 240 only has one slot.
3 questions:
How hard is it to upgrade the RAM? How many slots does it have?
Is it difficult to access the internal hard drive?
There's not ODD included with this, but is there a slot for a DVD drive? If so, is the faceplate removable from the spacer?
Cant help you with 1 and 2, but as for number 3, if there is no ODD i can say with 95% certainty that there will not be a slot for one.
I bought a HP 240 with no ODD and there was a slot filled by a spacer. In some pics on this Acer you can see that there appears to be a spot for one but I'm not sure.
Edit: Have a look at the pics here, this looks to be its American cousin. http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-ES1-411-C0LT-14-Inch-Diamo…
hey guys, would this run a max resolution of 2560x1440 or higher?
Anyone know what a good laptop for a high resolution would be..or a great mini pc that can run a resolution this high? Don't really want to play games, main reason is for playing online poker and to fit more poker tables on the screen comfortably without overlap and my monitor goes up to 2560 x 1440 resolution, whilst not being too slow running poker tracking software and sites all at once.any help much appreciated!
I highly doubt it. Get yourself a desktop PC with a proper graphics card. Get multiple monitors if needed.
The HD Graphics built into the processor supports it via DisplayPort: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-Bay-Trail.103…
… however this laptop only has an HDMI port which is limited to 1920x1080.
WTH is up with the 32gb?
Write to drive up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s)
FOUR mb/s??
Using their own calculations, 1.2gb/40secs = 31mb/s
Yeah there's something wrong with the listing but cbf finding out what.
It's up to 100mbps
http://www.sandisk.com.au/products/usb/drives/ultra3/That's read speed :) They avoid discussing write speed until the fine print, which is where the 4mb/s came from.
That 100mbps max read speed would be for the 128GB or 64GB models, not the 32GB most likely.
Yeah UP To 100MBPS So I guess the 32 Might be around 80 which is what other sites say :)
Would this notebook be a good starter point for a 13yo for school work and internet? We dont want to spend loads but need something thats not going to be so slow he gets annoyed and can't use it.
Should work fine for internet and school work, if it was for say lots of gaming then you might want to look elsewhere.
JB had the QUAD CORE (C1WD) on Monday for $287, so:
a) thanks- that cashback is gonna come in handy!
b) keep an eye out @ JB for your chance to grab it once the tide returns. To answer some of the above-
Light, not too thick, and VERY usable. Yes, the ES1-411 is perfect for your little ones.
Keyboard is quite usable- no numpad (grr) to contend with, keys raised out of the body. KB doesn't appear replaceable, but you're not gonna be losing any keys either.
Touchpad is 2015-sized (slightly bigger than the old average), no discrete buttons, but not overly flimsy neither.
There are some 12-ish screws holding the bottom cover (+card reader), but your efforts will pay off- replaceable HDD, and addable DVD! Yep, there's a PLASTIC lappy DVD dummy sitting in there, and the SATA slots are built into the motherboard.
But I must warn you, Neo- when returning the back cover onto the machine, motion in from the headphone port side, lest you damage it.
Windows 7 running off a Samsung 850 flies niiicely! Comes with W8, and W7 drivers aren't on the website, but the ones that didn't install automatically (WiFi/USB3/BT/Card) are readily available on the Intel/Broadcom/Realtek websites.I remember looking at it thinking "this is exactly what a $300 machine should be"… It's nice, living here in the future. GL!
Thanks for the info, how about ram slots, possible to add another stick to have a a total of two dimms running?
I'd also like to know.
8GB + SSD will make this a little pocket rocket. I'll do what the above guy did, except my 850 purchase will go into the desktop and this laptop will receive my desktop's 840. (Samsung ssd's)
There's a single RAM slot, dude… Not soldered, but- there can be only one!
I stretched the budget and got the Acer i5 5the gen 5200 from dicksmith, they dropped from $699 to $599 and when they added the extra $90 off it came down to $509. What I found with net books is that the windows with bing is 32 bit although some have 64 bit processors so memory upgrades might be wasted beyond 4GB. Haven't found a way to get 64 bit windows 8.1 bing as its OEM version (bing is free) seems you need to buy windows 8.1 if you want 64 bit. the only save some money diy upgrades left seem to be add ssd, 4gb ram is $50 and often now that is the cost of the next machine up. check if it's 64 bit windows or 32 bit.
Yep, great idea about keeping a cheaper small laptop like this for travelling or to leave in car. Just to point out some points, the model quoted above from JB has the same Dual Core N2840, so no difference there.
I am like you and only use tablets and smartphone browsers only when there is no other option, and always prefer full
desktop version on a laptop with mouse and keyboard. Touch screens are really fiddly. You should be happy with your i5 5th Gen. at that price if your budget stretches, but for some this 14" Acer would fit the bill nicely for their needs.
Good point on the Ram and 32 bit O/S, for most 4GB is plenty. If we can find out if this has two Ram slots, then an extra 2GB bought cheaply for under $25 would work well too. Enjoy your new toys.
The C1WD model comes with the QC 2940, 68. But still, she's only got one RAM slot to play with.
might check it out on weekend nice to have lappy in the car and tether of the phone as I'm hating these tablet browsers. If it is 64 bit windows I'd patiently wait for memory on eBay.
another alternative is the ES1-411-C1WD at JB Hifi for $338 with $39 cashback from Acer
