3 year warranty is a big plus

    $149.95 shipping to WA

  • +6

$100 shipping, that makes 1000 total, why not buy a SONY for 1500 with a free PS3.

    • Does make more sense for some people. But some just don't want a PS3 or can't be bothered selling the PS3.

      • yeah but…. even without a ps3, wouldn't you rather a 40inch W series Sony for 1500?

1500 isn't just the "normal" price. its below wholesale cost. anyone who cant spare 500 extra to get a sony over this tv shouldn't be spending 1000 on a tv at all…..

no offence Broden, but i dont like this deal.

        • +4

Since its COTD, and it doesn't have a proper shop, I wouldn't recommend it either, but just giving a different perspective :)

        • Each to their own.

"anyone who cant spare 500 extra to get a sony over this tv shouldn’t be spending 1000 on a tv at all….."

I have no particular dislike for you kimmik, but you really need to know just how puerile that comment sounds mate! I suspect you probably regret it already!

Remember you are talking about a 50% increase in price here, that's a substantial amount to some people! ;)

Not all of us whip ourselves into the frenzy over Sony that some of you guys do apparently, I happen to think their stuff is normally grossly overpriced and under-featured compared to most competitors! Side-by-side comparisons of their LCDs with peers have never revealed any tangible performance benefits to me! I've had a number of Sony products myself over the years and quite frankly they've been no better or worse than that of other manufacturers! Decent enough gear, yes; but worthy of the inflated price tag, a resounding no! ;)

The mere fact they have had to reduce a 40" set below wholesale cost and value add a PS3 to make it anything like price competitive with other 42" units speaks volumes! :p

          • @StewBalls: lol no, no regret at all. just wanted to inject some emotion into a mundane post and a mundane thread.

btw i've always been anti-sony…. till their prices dropped to the current level. i think i'm being pretty objective here, if "purile" in my opinions.

            +1 for you stewballs

          • @StewBalls: You have hit the nail on the head. Sony are vastly overrated these days for quality and reliability, and have been for about 10-15 years or so.

They don't have anywhere near the reputation of reliability they did back in the 80s, when they were the epitome of finest Japanese engineering and were once upon a time actually made in Japan. These days they have completely lost the Japanese touch and are all about mass created Chinese-American items.

In the past decade I have had considerably more problems with Sony items than I have had with other "premium" brands in the same fields (cameras, mobile phones, headphones). These days I'd choose Panasonic any day for a TV over a Sony.

            • @iaijutsu: the relevant sony tvs are made in malaysia

    • This is slightly bigger, and the PS3 isn't $700 any more.

  • +5

Not bad - but Sony Bravia 40W5500 for $1498 with PS3 is still much better deal I reckon

  • +1

daewoo pfftt dont like their cars either

    • +1

yeah I don't know why the ad emphasizes it's made in korea. now if it's made in Japan that'd be praiseworthy

    • +3

Holden Barina = Daewoo Kalos, plus the Captiva, Viva, Cruze and Epica are/were similarly spat out of Korean factories. I agree that Japanese made is good but Korea has Samsung and I think most Korean-made eletronics are certainly better than Chinese made ones.

      • +2

Yup, people sure have short memories! It wasn't too many years ago that the tag "Made in Japan" was viewed as a joke! ;)

      • +2

I do not agree with your last sentiment. Most electronics are made in China these days, e.g. ipods, sony efc.

If you are comparing a wholly-owned Chinese company to a Korean one (e.g. TCL vs LG, Haier vs Samsung), then yes I agree with you.

        • +1

I've spent a fair amount of time in China, let me assure you guys that they are capable of manufacturing quality goods when they want to, and what they build for their domestic market is vastly superior to some (not all) of the stuff they export to the west! :o

As a matter of fact this disparity is quite a joke to my Chinese friends! ;)

Over there, brands like Haier (who seemingly make everything from mobile phones to hot-water systems), TCL and Hisense are just as well regarded as the big Japanese brands are here! It's not just parochialism either, it's backup…call for warranty service and you'll literally have a dude around at your place on a pushbike (seriously) in an hour or less! :)

        • Yeah I was thinking of the smaller brands or no-name brands without the high pricetag, since this TV is more or less in the 'low-pricetag' category.

      • Heard of Hisense TVs? They were a major sponsor of the Australian Tennis Open. They're Chinese made, and they're quite good.

  • +2

It's a pretty decent deal with a 3 yr warranty and cnet.com.au reviewed a 42" Daewoo LCD last year and liked it.

The only caveat is that this one is probably a 50hz panel.

  • 15000:1 Contrast Ratio. is it too low ?
sony definitely is much better deal bucuz u will get brand name + ps3+ 100Hz+ 100000 contrast ratio.

    • +1

that contrast is dynamic not true

      • +1

        what's the daewoo's real contrast?

        i'd imagine less than sony's 1:4000

      • +1

yes, i know its not true but if dynamic is 15000 so the native might be 1500

read a few reviews for daewoo electronics. Quite a lot of people said this brand suck in both service and quality.

  • oh gosh.. whose idea isit to even post this up? I dont see it as a bargain, as others suggested, 3 years warranty, free ps3, established brand for next to nothing more if you spend 5 minutes selling the ps3 on gumtree or ebay.

No deal for me and def a neg from me.. sorry

    • Sorry mate.

  • they never metion the model of the tv, beside, make in korea does not sound appeal to me,although samsung is a pretty good brand

  • No-Deal.

$1000 for a crap TV? No way. COTD = No Bargain

    • +1

Although this is not a bargain, I've had a few bargains from COTD before…

      • +2

Agreed but those days are long gone, COTD has gone abit downhill for a while now. They used to have those samsung tvs for CHEAP.. not some random unknown brands…

    • How do you know it's a crap TV?

Cnet liked the last 42" Daewoo LCD model they reviewed.
      http://www.cnet.com.au/daewoo-dlv-42u1gmb-339288154.htm

      • +3

Because people speak from a ignorant biased view rather then basing it on facts.

        • The TV reviewed by Cnet is a different model of Daewoo - plus it's last year's TV. LCD TVs have come along way since last year.

Also from looking at the specs, 8ms response time isn't on par with the current TVs that now come at 4ms. Motion Blur may become a problem.

And also a 42inch Samsung Plasma (which in my opinion is better than LCD) can now be bought for $1240 with 5 year warranty.
And the fact that Daewoo is unheard of in the TV industry plus the bad response time spec, I'd say it's a pretty crappy TV, and quite expensive at $1000 delivered.

  • Is this 120Hz?

  • +2

    This is a rip off.
    As usual, very misleading.
$150 for postage to WA???? That's a rip too.
I sent one from nsw to wa .. Same size for about $50.. Yes.. It's registered post.

Why would anyone buy this piece of crap at ridiculously expensive price.
