first post, just bought a receiver after a lot of research. If anyone is in the market I recommend. You are sacrificing warranty but in my case it was worth it.

    pretty decent price. $850 at Harvey Norman according to Static Ice. you could almost buy two from amazon.de for the same price.

    not sure warranty is even an issue, I've had great service from amazon USA for issues with an order before. I assume they'd be good with warranty, too. assuming amazon.de is as good as usa.

    I have a Denon x3000 purchased mid last year, and it is a great unit.
    I paid $950 from Harvey Norman, so is the X1100 really good value?

    Scratch that…a quick search shows the X3100 is $1400+, and the X1100 $700+ for local stock.
    Glad I got mine when I did!

    Maybe consider a previous model because you might get an X2000 for a similar price.

    I was looking at the x2000 originally but they always discount heavily the new products on amazon. If you are honestly looking at getting the x2000 look at the x2100, the prices are relatively the same on amazon.de

    I bought an Onkyo about 3 years ago from Amazon.de, it just failed recently (a common fault that Onkyo globally has recognised and will repair free of charge). The AU distributor doesn't want to know me (even if i pay for the repairs, they won't touch a grey import at all). If i want it repaired, i need to send it to europe. Postage on a 15kg amplifier is about $400…

    Keep this sort of thing in mind.

    I'm willing to take the risk as i got an $1100 amplifier for $420 and just understood that when/if it broke, i'd upgrade.

        yep, was very politely told no. If it was under the regular warranty of the item, they would have come to the party. This was a special manufacturer "whoops, we use a faulty board even after we've diagnosed it as a weak point. So you don't sue us, we'll repair that issue specifically for 5 extra years"

        For the record, the same board is still in use in current model Onkyo amplifiers.

          yeah this is the problem…

          firstly electronics engineers who can repair stuff to board level is rare and expensive

          secondly if its a board or chip fail and you cant get that part then you're finished

          eg. I had a Marantz reciever fail years ago and was extremely lucky to meet an Asian engineer in Syd. who could fix it for a low price… he didnt speak english well but luckily I could speak his language

          i'm sure he's out of business now

          Yes. Do NOT touch an onkyo - hdmi board failures due to design fault. Your onkyo WILL die.

      My Onkyo receiver has been repaired twice in 2 years and has just died a 3rd time.
      I will never buy this brand again. Bought a $400 Yamaha which has replaced it and seems to be fine.

        Nor will i. This wasn't the first time they've done the wrong thing either. Back in the mid 2000's they had a internet radio service they used to sell micro hifi style amplifiers. In 2008 they turned it off "due to the way that radio stations offer streaming audio". The functionality is now dead and buried so the amp is basically useless for what i bought it for. I since bought a cheap smartphone with app capabilities and used that for streaming capabilities so i could use it again

          @spotlessmind: no it was net tune or something. You can still stream music off a computer on your own network, but you cant use internet radio with it (which was the whole reason i bought it in the first place)

      Yep, sorry OP but I'd stay clear of Onkyo. As per many other comments here they're really not built very well. I'm a vintage Hifi collector mainly sticking with 2-channel gear from the 'golden age' of HiFi (mid 70s to mid/late 80s) but have picked up a lot of newer stuff along the way including lots from Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer & Yamaha.

      I have a couple of stacks (literally) of Onkyo & Denon gear from the last 10-15 years. Some of it is too far gone to bother with as it has completely failed (not sure why I've still got it TBH) and other stuff works OK but overheats and fails or just gives up after being on for a while. Interestingly, the Yamaha and most Pioneer gear of the same vintage & calibre all still work bar a few units that have been abused or obviously exposed to salty/humid air.

      Before I started collecting a few years ago I used to think Onkyo & Denon were 'da shit' but after seeing how much of their stuff fails I wouldn't recommend them to anyone! I don't think anyone would make anything that would last forever anymore and even if they did it'd be superseded within 3-5 years anyway… but my money would be on Yamaha gear as it just seems to work as designed for as long as most people would need.

      My 2c… but I genuinely hope the OP has good luck with his! KEEP IT CLEAN and KEEP IT COOL because that seems to be the biggest cause of failure with previous models and once they cook themselves to death then that's it!

    yeah I have bought a Yamaha receiver about 10 years back which is still running my system now. It had a power failure and I had the same response, the charge to get it looked at to tell me it was a failure was $80 but one of my friends fixed it cheaply. I'd have a look around a lot of repair places might be able to be more accommodating.

    Not to hijack the post, but does anyone recommend anything with a similar price that is 7.2?

    My Onkyo also died from a HDMI component failure outside the warranty period and Ambertech wont acknowlege this is a problem with Onkyos.

    Never again Onkyos!

        Ambertech stated that the Onkyo model wasn't the ones that have a reported HDMI issue and hence rejected it

      worse comes to worse, you can try to fix it yourself, seems like there is a few guides on the web about adding a few cheap electrical components like a resistor or another capacitor lol.

      Or you can see it to me for super cheap and I will fix it and use it myself XD

    This is for a denon, I just felt like a change try yamaha. I called Eastwood and they had a good deal on a refurbished yamaha, they offer 1yr support on it as well.

    I own this model (bought locally). The display died after about 2 weeks. I know its cheap but personally I would think twice before risking warranty on this item.

        $260 more but at least its local stock with 3 years warranty. I think some people forget that like mentioned above that you cannot buy spare parts for grey stock in oz if the serial number is from overseas. So even if you "wanted" to pay for a fix yourself Denon Aust would not sell you or the service agent the part. The smallest issue such as a firmware update failure and it becomes a paper weight.

        This is Aust stock. Not much more. Worth considering.

      I also have an X1100 bought locally for $670 from HN. Replaced a faulty Yamaha unit under warranty.
      I must say I love the Denon. This sure is a great price, but I too am very glad to have the three year warranty.

        I had a Sony da3000es receiver previously, bear in mind this was the 3rd highest product in their entire lineup. It developed a known design fault after a year and Sony screwed me over with their "international" ES 5 year warranty schenannigans.

        It went on to last 10 years before it finally fried itself. I got a denon 2113 to replace it a couple of years ago and am happy. It doesn't sound as good as the Sony, but I'm never buying Sony gear again.

          Oooh yeah, stay well away from Sony! I had similar experiences buying premium Sony gear for my first HT system about 15 years ago. Got everything Sony including an 80cm WEGA TV and cost over $20k for the complete system (excluding speakers). It all died within 2 years but I luckily bought their extended warranty so got it all fixed for free. It all ran for another 18months or so but then died the same way. I also had a 'competition grade' Sony car head unit at the same time and it cost over $3000 but it had a fault from new (crackling in left channel). Because I had installed it myself Sony got me to take the car to 3-4 'professional' installers so they could check everything was OK. It took them over 9 months to acknowledge it was their unit at fault, not the rest of the system or my OTT install. They replaced it with the newer model which was great as it was worth even more however it too died just after 12 months.

          Going from my vintage Hifi experience it seems 1990 was about the time Sony gear began to plummet in quality. Wish I had known that before taking the plunge on so much of their junk :( I suppose things can always change and I do know Australia got the worst of the Sony gear but going by recent experiences of the newer Sony gear I've collected it all seems pretty poorly designed & built. Such a shame as Sony were KING back in the 80s!

          @SteveAndBelle: Any particular recommendations at the 3-400 dollar price point? locally i can only seem to find entry level recievers with no features. Will drive 5 speakers (Aura towers, jamo surround and center). I have 2 in roof speakers which i'll install into a house i'm going to start building soon for a "alfresco" area, hence why the 7ch would be handy.

          @Matt P: I'm not up with prices or offerings of the latest gear sorry however why not just get a 5.1 Receiver and sort out the outdoor audio later on? IMO it's far better to keep your Home Theatre separate from your stereo Audio because when your HT Receiver dies at least you wont lose everything. Maybe even rethink installing outdoor speakers too and just use a couple of SONOS Play1s OR install the speakers you already have and wire them up to a SONOS CONNECT AMP sitting beside your 5.1 Receiver or somewhere else. Once you get into true multi-zone audio you'll never go back and you'll be slowly adding more & more over time. True multi-zoning is a real game-changer.

      I loaded it up in my cart, left the default 10-14 days shipping, and it comes up as 354 euros to ACT. Throwing that into Google gives 488 AUD. If you use amazon's conversion it might be worse. Or if you haven't put in an Australian address it might be adding VAT. Although VAT would probably make it a fair bit more than 19 extra.

      If you plan to buy overseas a lot, get a 28 degrees master card and buy in the overseas currency. The 28 degrees card has no currency conversion fees, and a decent conversion rate.
