  • -Edit: never mind, missed the US bit

  • How would this go in a NAS compared to the coolspins?

Seems like 7200 rpm disks would be overkill in a NAS as the most you will ever be able to read or write to them would be limited by the gigabit ethernet speeds.

Assuming you can get 5400 rpm disks for cheaper of course. (Which you usually can.)

Great price per GB, but seems like a noisy drive.

I recently bought 24 of these from an Australian retailer for my NAS. These drives are more noisy than the Hitachi 5K3000s I had before.

3 of the 24 drives started to remap sectors on the first day, and 1 of these failed entirely shortly after. I'm glad I bought it from an Australian vendor so I could send them back for RMA cheaply.

It's been just over a month now, and another drive has had a few remapped sectors. I'm waiting to see if the problem gets worse or if another drive starts to fail before I send it back for RMA.

The ones in Aus are the old model (MD04ACAxxx)

These ones are the newer model with 128MB cache that aren't available in Aus.

And yeah, I too bought Aus models just before the previous bargain and I'm hoping they are fine!!!

      • I will leave this here. I dont fully understand what the Toshiba rep wanted to say:

The storage products team has ensured me that this is just a labeling error on the box which has been corrected. The MD04ACA400 part number is assigned to the bare drive and is used for sales to OEMs (device manufacturers who use this hard disk as part of systems they build and sell, such as PCs.) Before Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. sells these same drives in retail packaging, those retail packages are assigned a new part number, which is PH3400U-1I72 in the case of this particular drive.

      • Thanks, didn't realise it's a newer model. Do you know what the model number of the drive itself is? Is it still the MD04 series?

    • Speaking of Toshiba drives, bought 3 of the DT01ACA300 during the ebay sale to use in my NAS. Picked them over the Seagate desktop drives but couldn't find a lot of info on them (recent info that is, most I found was back when the drives were just changing over from Hitachi and not sure if they are the same thing now)

      Fingers crossed they'll be ok.
