Bose and Bargain words don't even belong in one sentence unless it says "Bose is NOT a Bargain".

Says a lot when they setup their speakers so you can't audition them side by side with other brands in store.

IMO, Bose is absolutley not junk… but for the money there are many, many alternatives in most cases.

FYI… the Pioneer Receiver can be had around the mid-$300s so $600 of this deal is left for the Bose speaker pack. The speaker pack RRP seems to be around the $1000 mark so although this is a good deal for the Bose speakers there are cheaper alternatives… some without brand names (gasp!)

  • They are not wireless speakers, right?

  • BOSE=Expensive …Expensive=BOSE

  • what are the alternatives for a similar setup?

    • Are you talking about those offered in JB?

Jamo could be a brand to look at. They make some quite decent small/satelite speakers system.
Dali is more expensive but i believe the quality is on par is on par with Jamo
Wharfedale is also a pretty good brand to look at.
Sherwood as I understand are of the lower foodchain and mainly sold by JB
Sometimes, there are some Yamaha speakers package on sale and the price can be pretty good.

In general, a lot of speaker brands are actually owned by the same owners.

All depends on what you're after and the very grey area of what YOU think sounds good! I collect Hifi equipment and I've got no-name Chinese speakers worth only a hundred bucks or so that sound better to my ears across most music than some branded speakers worth many, many hundreds if not thousands! Unfortunately people still & probably always will associate brands with status and perceived sound (& build) quality… but hey if it makes you feel good to have an exclusive little badge on your equipment then that can also make it all worthwhile for some. On top of that it's near impossible to get any idea of how these systems sound these days let alone how they'll sound once you get them home so it's all just 'unknown' until you buy something and try it in your home, with your music and with your ears. Then and only then you'll know if it's suitable.

      • That makes totally perfect sense. However brands established are for people to make their choice easier I guess?

I would be very much interested to learn where and how did you find out those no-name chinese speakers which are good? I hope it was not by trial and error?

Trial & error unfortunately. I received them in a bundle of gear I bought 2nd hand. I was only after the Amplifier but had to take the lot but got it all at a silly low price so that was OK. I ended up chucking out the other junk (crappy old worthless, non-functioning and well abused Cassette Deck and CD Player) and was about to do the same with the speakers but they were large floorstanding towers ('DBDynamics' brand from memory) and they were too large for the wheelie bin so had to leave them aside until my next tip run or until I decided to sell them for whatever I could get for them. Cabinets were very well built too, very solid & very heavy but the black vinyl wrap was just starting to shrink & peel up on some edges.

One day I decided to connect them up just to make sure all the drivers were working and it was only then I realised how amazing they sounded! I stopped everything I was doing and spent the next few hours trying to get them to sound bad but just couldn't. I ended up giving them to a good mate of mine who was building up his first decent Hifi system and he still uses them to this day. This goes to prove that even I am a victim of brand bias because I could've very easily overlooked them purely on the brand name without even giving them a listen!

That was 4-5 years ago when I was only just starting out collecting seriously but it was a very good lesson to learn because I've never judged a piece of Hifi equipment on brand or specs alone ever since! Plug it in, play some music you like over a period of time and that's when you'll know what you like.

        • @SteveAndBelle: dB dynamics were sold by Harvey Norman alongside accusound

    • So Aceboy, what exactly are you after? Someone here may be able to assist.

    • The Yamaha yht-4910au is a good alternative for $1099 + 20% discount on ebay store (TGG & Appliance online). It comes with rx-v477 network av receiver which I believe is one level above vsx 329 in term of output power and features.

    • Thanks for the replies peeps

I'm after a small set of speakers

Will be used in my study/man cave

Will be used mainly for gaming and will need mutiple connections

      Rg
Bluetooth, aux and digital because I connect my PC ps4 and iphone to the device

Right now I'm using one those all in one sound bars

      • Well IMO, if you need Surround Sound for gaming I think you'd be far better going with an entry-level Surround Receiver but one with all the connectivity you need then just buy a few pairs of inexpensive Voll Bookshelfs (https://voll.com.au/shop/b44/) and a small Sub. From all reports Voll have been looking at small inexpensive yet decent Subs for a while and will hopefully be releasing one soon.

Building a system such as this may save you a little bit of cash and will still provide top-quality sound reproduction but also allows you to dissolve the system in the future for ultimate flexibility ie. you may decide you no longer need full surround sound in the study or you may move house and realise it just wont be suitable so using decent bookshelfs gives you the flexibility to split the system up and use them in other areas. The problem with a lot of these all-in-one packages (especially Bose gear) is that although very convenient the speakers have been tuned to work as a set so running the small satellites without the supplied Woofer (it isn't a Sub!) just isn't an option as they rely so heavily on the particular lows from that matching Woofer. Go for the Volls and you're buying speakers that work incredibly well by themselves but can also work with others to create a decent Surround System. A far better investment from many perspectives.

        Again, just my 2c…

        • Thanks I will check it out

  • Obviously jb can't flog them off. This pack was on sale $1395 last year and they had dozens.
Even the sales guy said their not worth that price.
Wait until they drop to $495 ;)

    • Wait until they drop to $495

If they do that would be really awesome.

If you like the look and sound of bose speakers then this one is pretty good, sure.

But then as others have said there are better value speakers that will give you great sound at a fraction of the price that bose commands.

Then again if you dont like the look of traditional loudspeaker designs and want speakers small and compact but capable of giving a lot of sound, i guess your choice is Bose, Bang & Olufsen, etc

  • only a boss can afford a bose.
