Alienware 13 (i5, 8GB, 256GB, 860M, 13" FHD) $1,359.20 @ Dell eBay

210
CTECH20

Part of the eBay 20% off tech deal
Also credit to 1bug's deal and beaver2233's comment for identifying this deal.

I usually associate Alienware as being overpriced garbage, but at $1,325.22 after 2% Cashback via Cash Rewards, it compares quite well with similar priced gaming laptops.

What are your opinions? Should i wait for the next deal from LBO or jump on this one?

  • 860M looks like you'd have to turn details down a fair way to play new stuff at full rez. S'alright I guess

I think this is pretty good. This amounts to around just over $1000 USD, and the US price is about $1400 USD. Actually had I not got my laptop recently, I could've gone for this (no complaints with it so far, but it definitely doesn't have the graphical grunt that this has).

But LBO does do pretty sweet deals from time to time as well, so it's really personal preference.

  • Does anyone have this machine? I am really interested in it as it can be future proofed with the "graphics amplifer".

    • I ordered it so can't comment, yet (have read a fair bit about it). Yeah the graphics amplifier seems cool. Though is quite expensive along with paying for a graphics card. Only thing on this particular one is the i5-4210U may become a bottleneck when using such a powerful graphics cards with the amplifier (by how much I'm not sure).

They test how much of an effect the cpu bottleneck can have on the overall peformance with amplifer on and off.
Just trying to weigh the compromises and whether it even matters - i just want to do 4k movies and play dota and some video editing.

        • Pretty in-depth review. Further supports the reasonably good battery life.

  • ALIENWARE ALPHA I5 version has similar specs but much cheaper. If you consider this laptop is a space-saver gaming machine, alpha might be a better option.

    BTW, what's LBO?

    • Logical Blue One
Also the alpha isn't portable and doesn't have a screen so doesn't directly compare..

  • LBO: http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/615-horize-w230ss-cle…
    Or this alienware?
the horize has much better cpu and 3 year warranty and ~ 4 hours battery life.
Alienware has graphics amplifer (+$300) and ~ 5.5 hrs battery life.

    • Also take note that the LBO doesn't have an operating installed. But yeah, bit of a tough choice. Think either one will be pretty good either way. 3 year warranty looks nice though.

see my other comment, affordablelaptops has the new model (w230sd) with a 960M, at a similar price

after a long discussion - i have decided to go with the alienware.

In 2-3 years time when i look for an upgrade - i can keep the hardware of the alienware and add eGPU to it easier than a clevo low range laptop.

I wish they had GPU upgrade available to the low range clevo laptops, but they dont >.<

If you guys are looking for an alternative 13" gaming laptop for similar price:

    http://affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/d517_metabox-…

My brother has the older model (w230ss) with an 860M. This has a 960M (not sure how much performance difference if any). You can also configure it with a 3200x1800 screen if you'd like (only $89 extra!!), however on that size screen you better be prepared to use windows 8 scaling and such. If you look very closely at the high res screen (like face at the monitor) it looks slightly off, possibly due too the screen tech they use.

Anyway, this is mainly for people who already have an SSD or Windows. It is $1430 with 8GB, a 256 SSD and no windows, and $1311 with 8GB no SSD and no windows.

It says '2kg' weight but that probably doesn't include charger, which is about the same as the alienware.

  • Rofl @ 1080p gaming with a 860M and dual core CPU. Such a waste of money - this thing will be obsolete within a couple of years.

    • Yeah it would, but i dont want to be tied down to a desktop. What suggestion would you have instead of a desktop? A $2.1k gaming laptop?

      • Mobile gaming is expensive if you want to keep up with desktop gaming, always has been.

A 970M would do most people fine, but they're fairly new and $$$

        • yeah this is the problem and why i think for the price, the alienware 13 is really quite a good deal.

      • My suggestion is to go for a lower resolution screen. For example, 1366x768 on a 13" screen is higher in pixel density than 1080p on a 20" monitor. With the lower resolution, an 860M might suffice.

Because of the mediocre clocks, the 15 Watts CPU is far behind the 47 Watts rivals. While the Core i5-4210U "only" has a deficit of 25% compared to a Core i7-4710HQ (Acer V 15 Nitro) in the single-core rendering test, the CPU falls behind by 64% in multi-core scenarios. The Clevo W230SS Barebone shows that you can actually equip a 13-inch chassis with a quad-core processor. The biggest advantage of the 15 Watts model is the moderate power consumption.

  • my laptop is on the way out after 12 years and this was one of the laptops on my shortlist. only thing i don't like about it is the lack of optical drive.

    • you can get external CD drives pretty cheap these days. Not sure about quality on these Ebay ones though: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/External-Slim-USB-2-0-IDE-DVD-ROM…

      • -1

while this laptop would be sitting on my desk all the time, i don't have much space there, so not keen on buying an external optical drive that doesn't even burn DVDs and takes up an extra USB port.

Another Dell online laptop that ships from Malaysia - as it's over $1000 you may need to pay GST.

    • good point..

      • +2

Actually, it appears I'm wrong, thankfully. Whilst being shipped from Malaysia, they are supplied by Dell Australia; I've just received an order acknowledgement from Dell for another of their laptops coming from Malaysia: the paperwork does say GST paid.

        • Thanks for that - Purchasing one tonight hopefully

  • Will be interesting to see how long they take to ship this ('usually 9-13 days').

    • Yeah…eta for me is 9 April - 22 April.
Fingers cross it is 9-13 days.

      • wouldnt be surprised if it takes longer with the increase in sales due to the ebay sale and easter break. hopefully that's not the case though.

        • Whelps, just got email that eta is 22nd of april. Fml, first world problems.

        • @gawky: also the same here :(

  • So with this 2% cashback thing. Will it be reflected when I order it or after as a separate 'DR' to my credit card?

    • Will be separate. You'll receive an email usually within a few days from cash rewards stating the amount. This will be added to your cash rewards account usually within a month. Then you must transfer it to your bank account.

    • Got mine a day later.

  • well i received mine today - came with the i5-5200U (instead of the i5-4210U) and the 960M instead of the 860M :)

    • nice!
