ASUS EEEBook X205 11.6" $253.30 @ JB Hi-Fi

70

Great little laptop for the price. Best price I've seen in Australia.
That's with the 15% of all computers.
Also come with one year of office 365.

My gf bought one of these from JB a month ago, 15% sale too. It seemed that the 2gb ram was really killing the entire experience. She couldn't open up basic programs such as firefox/microsoft word without it freezing/not responding every 5 minutes.
She returned it and bought another cheap notebook with 4gb ram and she is very happy with it now.

I've been using this model for a couple of days and its been exceeding my expectations. Word runs fine and i can have around 8 tabs in chrome with very little problems. If you are expecting great performance you definitely shouldn't be looking at the sub $300 range. 2GB of ram is very small but does the job for word processing and browsing especially on windows 8 with my experience. Plus it gets around 10 hours of battery life

    • 4gb is pushing it these days. 2 gb might be ok if you only have one program running at a time.

    • Speaking from experience, I have an Intel Bay Trail Atom laptop with 2GB RAM running Windows 8.1. I typically have a few Google Chrome tabs open, while running a few other applications, including Word.

      No issue with 2GB RAM.

  • I bought one of these and LOVE it. All day battery, literally 12 hours in my case. Wifi fast, Chrome browsing perfect, installed Office 2010, no problem. Sold Office 365 on ebay for 50 bucks which makes this little thing even cheaper. Of course, you cannot do heavy stuff on it, but much better than similarly spec-ed tablets which are slower in my experience. The Asus is brilliant. When you travel, put sensitive data on a micro SD 64GB card you can carry in your wallet. When you leave the little toy in a rental car's boot, no worries. If someone steals it - no data lost and no value either. I love mine, will buy another one. Snappy enough, fair enough quality, screen OK and big enough to do work on. Again, the battery is why you buy this thing. And the charger is mobile phone small, much better than carrying a Dell brick. Oh, and the touch pad is superb. Just find the reviews on Youtube and do not expect i7 performance. Watched movies using VLC all day next to my office window while writing outlook emails.

  • is the RAM upgradeable on these things?
it was rather easy on my [now ancient] eee pc 901

    • Yeah interested in the answer to this too. Can the RAM be upgraded?

Both the RAM and eMMC storage are soldered and NOT upgrade-able.

        • if someone had decent soldering skills, could it be done?

        • @tdw: Maybe if you could find the right RAM chips
