Asus Eee PC 1000HE Netbook with 9.5 HR Battery Life for $399 from MLN

400

Asus EEEPC 1000HE, I bought one of these for $795 3 months ago, its now less than half, price, i feel a little annoyed at this, but its a really good bargain from MLN, its a 10" netbook and it has that floaty Mac keyboard look to it.
I dont think this will last long at all.

Available in white or black.

ecxcellent netbook.using it on the bus (snug fit factor) to type this, in fact. overnight charging gives around 7hours (on the meter) worth of use for the next day with the Maxon 3G plugged in. Got this a few weeks ago through COTD (Plus 24 mths extended warranty +$50). Put in 2GB ram from umart a couple of days ago. Works like a charm. at $399 without the Paypal cashback delay, it is unbeatable.

I paid rather more for mine. A HUGE step up from the 700 series (which I also bought) and with really good running time off the battery. Nice keyboard and has built in bluetooth and wireless-N.

  • No black? hmmmmmm this could be a deal breaker… (yes petty I know)

  • +2

Bought this off COTD for $629 back in August, can't believe how much it's dropped since then!

    Great netbook though.

  • haha you should get a refund and buy it back again.

What a great deal. Even I'm tempted. However, the recent rash of Eee PC 'deals' led me to check out for new releases and there are some really interesting Eee PCs slated to be released in the next month or so:

    http://www.netbookreviews.net/asus/roadmap-upcoming-netbooks…

In particular, the 1201 is said to have 1.6Ghz dual core, Ion powered graphics, Windows 7, 3GB ram etc (http://www.netbookreviews.net/asus/eee-pc-1201n/) Making it more like a standard notebook albeit at netbook prices.

Most of the next-gen Eee PCs will not come with 250GB HDD as standard too.

I already own an ageing 1000H…should I wait or just spend $399 to get this one for now…hmmm. Decisions decision.

    • +2

The 1000he isn't much of an upgrade from the 1000h. You could always wait, but keep in mind the new models won't be anywhere near $400.

The RRP for the 1201 is US$499. That's AU$550 at today's exchange rates. Of course, Aussies NEVER get the equivalent of the US RRP for most electronic goods (PS3 anyone? How does US$299 RRP translate to AUD$500?)

      • I own the ol' 701 4G Surf, which cost me $450 at Myer. I feel shame now that something costs cheaper for better. 9.5 hour battery life as opposed to 3? Sign me up. Forget Christmas presents, Santa needs his own!

it's funny how 'netbooks' are getting bigger. 12" is only 1" less from a notebook. i think 10" should really be the max when calling something a netbook.

      • I agree! It's like the Eee PC was a baby, and now it's slowly growing up into an adult laptop.
"Comes with a new, larger screen, as well as keyboard and hard drive and CD player and…"
I love the portability of the Eee PC though. I feel like one of those 'Fits Right Into Your Pocket!' guys.

WARNING: specs are wrong on the linked MLN page.
It says it has a WXGA, when asus says it is actually the low-res 1024x600 screen (WSVGA) found on other low-end netbooks.
That's a big difference, and will rule it out for many people.
XGA is the old 1024x768 standard, so WideXGA is 1280 or 1366x768, though its sometimes used for 1280x800 (which I would prefer)

Maybe they could call this "short XGA"?

You paid $795 3 months ago? I paid $619 6 months ago and claimed 50% of it back via education tax refund. Anyway http://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/18749 is $399 for 1005HA which is sleeker, lighter and longer battery life than the 1000HE.

    • 1005HA specs compare to the 1000HE?

    • Yes, it was actually $899 when it first came out, thats really good that you got it at such a cheap price. The 1000HE though similar in spec to the 10005ha, has a better battery life, which is what counts for me. But the other one is also a good deal.
I didnt think the 1000he was available 6 months ago, you got a good deal.
If battery life is what you are after nothing tops the 1000HE,

The 1005ha, is after a $50 cashback, so its really $449, this 1000he is $399 with no strings attached, or conditions, plus it has a better battery life, so its really up to you guys what you think is better.

  • 1000HE pros:

    Longer battery life
    Chiclet keys
Same price without having to get cashback

    1005HA pros:
    Smaller form factor
    Lighter

Does the 1000HE come with a laptop case? My old 1000H came with a case but my housemtes 1005HA didn't.

One thought, you have to actually want the long battery life on this.
Personally, I'm happy with only 3hrs away from the power socket, in exchange for less weight. This is quite heavy by netbook standards.

    • +1

its only about 50grams heavier, becuase of the battery, which is what gives it a long battery life, but becuase the battery actually lasts 9.5 hours, you dont need to carry the charger. So actually what you carry around is a lot less as it offers you all day computing.
Its a matter of preference I guess, but with this unit, you dont need a charger,
other than that a good thin and light netbook is the S101 I think. its built really really well.

      • +1

the 9.5 hours is a bit misleading. i have the 901 which claims 8 hours but that's only if you leave it on idle on the lowest settings, wifi off etc. if you have it running on normal settings i get 4-5 hours which is still good but yeah..

        • I get 8 hours real usage out of it, so im pretty happy, i did once get 9 hours, i didnt do much on it though.

  • +1 nice for what i need it for

  • I bought one of the COTD ones a few weeks back. Cost $360 ish if memory serves me correctly. still waiting on that $50 cashback.

As far as the laptop's concerned…it's still as good instantly coming back alive after being on standby. light, long battery life…you can't go wrong so long as it really is mainly a mobile video player type thing you're after.

Oh by the way, i think after the $50 cashback. this deal is slightly pricier because of the $29 delivery charge. Still a great deal though.

    • I saw it on COTD as well it was $449, plus a $50 cashback, plus postage so it was actually more than this deal.
      http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/Netbook_%26_Laptop_Megasale-…
I have seen MLN do Clearance deals, and when they clear stuff they dont mess around, normally their pricing is really good anyway on all of their stuff, plus they know what they are talking about when you go to their store.

      • +1

Oh i made a mistake the COTD cost after cashback was $410ish with postage. With this deal, one you have to pay postage too and it's about $10 more.

They're both good deals. No point quibbling over +-$10

  • According to the ASUS website, it's the 1005HA that has the longer battery life, at 10.5hrs. And the 1000HE has 9.5hrs. Apparently there is a 63Wh 6 watt battery for the 1005HA. I assume this is not standard though.

Also the ASUS website states that the 1005HA is actually 180g lighter than the 1000HE, not 50g as mentioned above.

    http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product1000he-spec.html

    http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product1005ha-spec.html

Regardless, these are both very good deals. Personally i think i'd go for the smaller lighter model, over an extra 10-15% battery life.

A bit confusing, does it say specifically whether it is XP or Linux?

    • +1

In the spec's at the foot of the web page:

      Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP

      \_/7

      • a shame. I'd prefer one of these new better spec netbooks, but with the old-style tiny SSD and linux. sigh.

  • if you guys missed out on this one, there is something similar (not as good) for less, though i dont think it will last long either.
