AFAIK Lyca operates on only part of the Telstra 3G network, and data is slow as it is routed via the UK

      • and data is pretty slow as it is routed via the UK

still may be a better option for those people in a crap Optus coverage area…

      • routed via the UK

Why would they route it from the UK when its available locally ? DO u have a link or something about this.

Hopefully a Lyca Mobile user can provide some insight about speeds. I have no problem with 3G speeds, still using amaysim 3G and its faster than my ADSL2 connection at home at times

        • +20

When I go down to the shops, I usually take the route via Thailand.

        • This is my second month with Lyca and it's been pretty damn good so far.
I've not had any coverage issues, but speeds are faster than Voda or Optus, a bit slower than telstra, but I'm happy to put up with that to save $20 a month from telstra.

Lack of MMS hasn't been an issue, I use whatsapp/facebook messenger if i need to.
If someone sends you an MMS you can view it on the Telstra website.

EDIT: did a quick speed test, I sit about 10mbs. Not amazing but I don't load videos often, so no issues.

      lyca doesnt have mms capability

    • Lycamobile is a good deal but sadly there is no tethering.

    • This seems to good to be true, is data charged per mb or kb

  • We're currently with Boost on the $40 recharge which has unlimited calls/sms/mms and 2.5GB of data the last time I checked. We only started with them because I didn't want to stay on contract anymore and the Telstra network has great coverage. Can anyone share their experience if they've tried both Boost and Optus?

    • +2

I'm with Virgin who use the Optus network. Still get plenty of blackspot areas with almost zero coverage around inner Melbourne and down the Peninsula. When using my Telstra wifi modem, I get strong reception in all those areas.

If you can afford it, stick with the Telstra network…

There will soon (after 31 March) be a $20 recharge on Boost too which is worth considering, depending on your usage.

100 minutes, unlimited SMS, 1 gig data.

Old $30 prepaid social was so much better :( shame it's discontinued

    • My family are still grandfathered on prepaid social but was thinking of switching to this as I thought it seemed better. Why is the social so much better? It only has 500mb data. I don't think any of us use >1gb Facebook data but I may be wrong.

Also, I was wondering if facebook voice/video calling is unmetered on social?

      • The call minutes can be used to call certain countries as well!

You can watch any videos on Facebook and I think anything with the app is unmetered. (The messenger app isn't unmetered).

        Data add one are cheap

    Better deal.

    • +3

Not really sure how you reckon that's better?

      Optus is 4G
      Boost is 3G

Optus has 500mb more data and 200 more minutes talk time for only $10 extra…?

      • -2

what use is 4g when you get zero reception?

and the rest isnt worth $10.

        • +1

Optus 4G is actually pretty good. I get ~20-25mbits and my phone only supports 1800mhz.
Optus is going absolutely gangbusters with their 700mhz 4G rollout, outpacing Telstra by over 2:1.

          @megaphat:

I get ~20-25mbits and my phone only supports 1800mhz.

Even at that speed, 1.5GB only lasts 10 minutes (per month) .
4G is of limited usefulness until the capacity is increased and quotas raised dramatically.

Am glad Optus is still grandfathering the ex-woolies $26 / 45 day with 5GB.

    • +1

      Yep me too.

I think their strategy is to not offer 4G - that's the carrot to upgrade.

  • +2

If you have friend or family that has a optus landline you can get them to go with you to sign up the $45 sim only plan which has unlimited calls + text and 3gb net and you save $10 so it's only $5 more but unlimited calls plus double the data

    • I just signed for a sim only plan at $30, you should know that they don't have a "Excess Spend Threshold" so with Optus your bill is unlimited.

I am going to switch to a pre-paid, I have accepted to pay $10 and have no liability.

      Just a friendly warning…

      • Thanks also thhe only overspending with my current option would be if I go over 3gb of data which then they charge you a extra $10 for 1gb. Thats the only charge everything else is unlimited and like prepaid so if I want to stop I just won't pay.

  • +2

Yay well at least it looks like the competition is finally causing the bigger telcos to stop price gouging too much. Still not gonna switch from my $8.90 1gb plan for this.

  • Optus in Sydney is not too bad, speed is pretty average probably due to it being oversubscribed, but so far coverage hasn't been an issue.

  • Thanks TA, this deal is a lot better than the current prepaid social! :)

  • This is a good deal for me. I'm with Optus now on a $50 a month Xperia Z plan with 1.5gb data. My plan comes up at the end of the month and much to my dismay most 4G plans with an included phone these days are $60 and up.

Using this, I can buy a phone outright for around $500 and pay $30 a month. Effectively this is exactly the same as the $50 a month plan I am currently on!

    • +1

Exactly the same, except you wouldn't be stuck in a conract with a network-locked handset?

      • Well yeah, so definitely a better deal. When I got the Z a couple of years ago it was brand new and $200 odd cheaper than buying the phone outright.

        • Checkout the Asus zenfone 2.

  • With prepaid, am I able to use direct debit to pay the $30 every 30 days or do I have to do it old school and buy a recharge card?

    • +2

There is an option "Setup AutoRecharge with credit card" on their prepaid recharge site.

  • This or telechoice?

  • +1

btw guys, if you are existing Optus Prepaid customer and wanted this deal, all you have to do BEFORE you recharge is do a change of rate plan by txting 'MENU' to 9999 and following the sms prompt ..
I know this isn't the cheapest deal around but for per KB billing vs other MVNO which was per MB billing

  • Checked the Critical Information Summary and Social Networking traffic isn't unmetered. Boo-urns. As an existing $ 40.00 pre-paid customer I'm tempted but wonder whether my unmetered social networking usage would mean I'd chew through that 1.5 GB like a tube of Pringles. I suppose one or two $ 5 data top-ups would make things square again.

  • This I hot if you have internet and phone from Optus costs you only $20. I will sign up as my 3g works only with Optus (I've got a UK iPhone 5 which uses their bands). Husband is on the Lyca and absolutely loves it. We haven't had to call cs, maybe that's why. He topped $20 and got all unlimited plus the 5gb. This month we are topping online. Just s shame that my phone needs Optus. Mind you I don't know how long lyca will be $20 a month as usually is $30. Still good value though. Optus is good if you get $10 off though.

    • I am pretty sure your phone doesn't need optus. have you tried your husband's sim card by any chance?

    • "This I hot if you have internet and phone from Optus costs you only $20. "

where did you hear/get this? I'm interested.

      Thanks

  • Can i activate a $30 (currently $15 at woolies)sim with monthly plan, use the 1.5 Gb of data then change to the $2 per day plan and get a further 7.5 Gb of data?

Looks like you can't do that as soon as you change plan you lose any credit you had and have to recharge :(
