What's good about this modem? I have nb6+4w and I struggle to get a signal in my living room. Would this modem be any better?

    • +2

      Should be marginally better.
But for guaranteed success I'd be looking at a Powerline Ethernet solution for similar money.

      • Thanks.

    • will be same or worst, better go for a 8960 instead

      • Why is the 8960 better?

        • my mistake, it's 8970 not the 8980 which I am using. 8970 is the best value for 2.4Ghz modem, it definitely much better than netcomm.

        • @leetec:

          Thanks.

        • @leetec:
8970,….8960,…and now the 8980 ???? No offence, but now that is confusing :-)

So which one is better or worse for signal strength ?

Just to confuse the issue, I have an unused TD-W8961 ND and have never tried setting it up, as I was waiting for a Belkin N150 F9J1001v1 to die on me first, but into it's 3rd year still going strong with the ocational drop out. I live in a regional maybe 3 to 4 Klm away from my nearest exchange. I believe some chips are better than other in modems for long distances, so need to consider the modem as well as the 150N V 300N wifi speed gain. Would really appreciate someones feedback on the TD-8961 ND as I bought it cheap from Aldi as a backup, but could be worth setting up now for an upgrade.

@ozhunter68: 8970 has best 2.4g wifi, 8980 is the worst. 8980's 5GHz WiFi is too weak cann`t penetrate double brick wall.

        • @ozhunter68:
Google the model and Chipset and look to see if it's Broadcom.
Their chips are renowned for extracting the best speed/stability combo on longer lines.

    • Does it have an external antenna? Try upgrading to something like this

      • It does have an external antenna. I think this looks like worth trying.

  • Anyone cares to comment how good this modem is, in comparison to the archer?

  • Thinking whether to get this..
    I have a Billion Bipac 7402 at my mum's.
It works, but quite old. I checked the modem release year 2005, so I must have got it between 2005~2007.
How often do you guys upgrade modem/routers?

    • +6

      when they fail.

      • or a major security issue is found, and the old router isn't being updated any more.

      • well apparently they have to restart the modem every couple of days..
and occasionally internet stops working somehow after my mum switches off her laptop, and my sis will have to restart modem for it to work all ok again..

        so it fails but works
should I wait till it dies permanently then?

        • +2

i am still using a 7402 and was experiencing issues as you describe, would have to occasionally restart the modem etc… in the end it was a line issue and the router is still going strong.

rule out that its not a line, filter, other telephony device, extension cable issue…

        • You need to perform an isolation test first
          http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/isolation_test

It's important that during the isolation test that you plug your modem directly into the wall socket, and not sharing any power with other devices using a powerboard, extension lead or double adapters.

If your modem still loses sync and requires frequent restarts during said test, it's probably a good idea to try a new modem.

I had a TP-link, bought new, many years ago. It was rubbish. I through it in the bin. Connection was unstable and there was no firmware update available.

Billion was much better but occasional reboot needed.

My Draytek run for many years without rebooting.
    The Asus is also excellent.

So why is this TP-link good? I trust Asus/Draytek more than this.

    • +2

Depends on your line, distance from exchange and various other factors. The reason your TP-Link was not as good as the Billion was because, I bet, your billion had a Broadcom chip and the TP-Link modem did not. Broadcom = stability over highest sync, especially useful if you're far from the exchange like I am.

Just another point of view - I bought one of these to replace the parent's Disaster Link modem router. They were able to get higher sync speeds, and the addition of gigabit wired and wireless N meant better network connections for the price under $100.
However, I placed a 20 m long CAT 6 cable to port 3 or 4 and was only able to get 100mbit connection at the other end. RMA'ed it, got another and same issue. Plugging into port 1 or 2 could achieve gigabit, so it looks like the power to all ports is not even.
So I think it's a great modem for the price, just be aware if you have 4 lan connections all over the house feeding into it.

  • Off topic, but has anyone who bought a TP Link Archer d9 received any news of their bonus item redemption (the cloud camera or network adapter)?

Reply to your own Post - hmmm

anyways - I have had a look around ( not shit loads but a look )

I am not 100% sure this has the broadcom chipset ( I think V3 of this modem does but i have no doc to support)

    Centrecom have the W8980 router for $95 (RRP $119) - SAVE $24

    http://www.centrecom.com.au/tp-link-td-w8980

Not sure if it's much better than the W8970 but I have one and it does the job well.

    • Thanks for some positive feedback on the TD-W8980. Had a look at specs and tick a lot of boxes for the price. Would you know if this has the Broadcom chip which going on peoples feedback is more stable over longer distances?

Anyhow, this would be suitable for most average users out there, bar the power users and people wanting the very best and latest. Seems like a bargain for what it does.

      • Google dude, it's in the second link! You don't even need to follow it, you can see it in the blurb!

        • Thanks, the answer is no, not Broadcom but Lantiq.
