  • How is the battery life compare with LG G2 or G3? or Moto G 2nd?

  • Also confused..

    • will it get lollipop
    • is it dual Sim
    • does it have all the frequencies of AU model S5
    • will the phone get cheaper once the S6 is released

Unsure if I should pull the trigger or wait for dick smith to have a sale on the HTC one m9 or Samsung S6…

    • +2

      It should get Lollipop eventually.
No model number on the ebay listing so assume it would not be dual sim.
The phone is being sold to the Australian market so should have most of the frequencies.
The phone will not get much cheaper since the S4 is still hovering around the $350-400 mark brand new.

It really depends if you need a phone now and how much you want to spend.
Dick Smith won't get stock of the aforementioned phones for a few months and they will be around the $800-900 price range.
This is a good buy if you need a new phone and are not too concerned about a 2 year consumer warranty.

    • +1

It should get Lollipop and at least a version or two after it when Google releases it going by Samsung's past history of OS updates on their flagship phones. (e.g. Galaxy S4 started with Jelly Bean, then Kit Kat and now Lollipop is out from Samsung)

      • Great.. Just purchased the black one.. Should tie my over until the S7 then I can do all the research again ;)

Any suggestions in relation to good cases or bumper that won't make it too thick? I don't usually get screen protectors..

        • +1

I highly recommend getting a tempered glass screen protector. It should set you back around $5 to $10 on eBay. (better ones usually have rounded 2.5D edges) Don't get the plastic film protectors as they just aren't as durable nor feel as nice as glass.

Spigen & Nillkin are good place to start for decent cases. Both make some nice thin border/bumper cases also.

        • @jakiman: Definitely get a $5 tempered glass screen protector. It will feel and be better than even a $100 plastic screen protector because it's real glass.

      • According to androidcentral.com, lollipop update for SGS5 is already on the roll in US & Canada. I guess in few weeks (maybe in a month) it will be in Australia as well.

  • Whilst I understand people's frustration with the lack of removable battery and external micro sd slot on S6, I haven't had the need to replace the battery or remove the 32GB Micro SD card from my Galaxy S4 from the day that I bought it. I also understand that other people's requirement will be different but for most people I don't think it will be an issue.

    • +1

No MicroSD expansion is a big issue for me and I don't see what's the point of removing it?

      • +1

No benefit to the user really. But would be beneficial to Samsung for needing less components, 1 less thing to break (less warranty repairs), cleaner exterior design, cheaper manufacturing etc.

    • Are your photos backed-up to the cloud?

  • It is strange as a current iPhone 6 user why Samsung would want their new Galaxy to be MORE like the iPhone rather than differentiating themselves. Why not release a phone that is waterproof, has removable battery & memory card slot, keep the humidity sensor from the S4, etc ensuring their phone is NOTHING LIKE an iPhone.

The only new feature I like on the Galaxy is the 'touch to reply'sensor for instant text message when the phone is on the table face down - that is cool.

    • It seems they are just trying to keep it more simple as they have already tried what you've said by stuffing it with everything they can and it didn't work out that great with the S5. So simpler they went with less bloat, less removable bits, cleaner lines, harder (but not necessarily more durable) materials which many perceive as higher quality. Not saying it's all great but it might actually yield more sales thanks to simpler choices even if it means it's more restrictive. It's just not that great for a small portion of consumers like me.

      • +3

They already removed the FM radio. Now they remove battery and sd card and no longer make it waterproof. Extrapolating, by the time we get to the Galaxy S10, the box will just contain a fold out paper and a piece of string.

  • +1

    sale is moving very slowly….

    • +4

Yeah too expensive when so many phones coming out.

  • +1

Don't know if it will help anyone but I got a S5 from Kogan when they had those 5 min deals a fair time ago… it has a "Vodacom" splash screen at start up and a vodacom update app that does not do any updates but it can't be removed.

Model I got back then is a SM-G900F

    • Which version of Android does it came up ? and you manage to upgrade since then?

    • Also, which network are you with and how is your 4G?

  • One should be able to claim TRS refund when buying from Kogan?

Not sure what to do, I'm leaving mid May, but to get TRS refund you need to buy no more than 60 days prior to leaving country. This deals ends in 6 days, no idea if there will be deals like this till mid/end April? In theory S5 price should drop further because of S6..

    • +2

Instead of deleting my question replying to myself in case someone wants the answer - phone is supplied by Kogan HK so no tax invoice and no TRS refund available.

    • +1

BTW, I've also asked what is exact model and they said they have no idea what manufacturers will send.

  • +1

Tempting deal but I already have enough phones. I'm going to try waiting until we have phones with LTE-A and all the future/new frequency bands worked out. In particular 700mhz bands support

    • +1

See you with your Samsung Galaxy S2 in 2018!

      • +1

        Wait for Galaxy S11.

      • +1

        Note 2 actually :-)

  • +1

    Ahh crap, bought one.

    • +1

Hope you didn't forget CashRewards 2% cashback.

I'm thinking of flashing Cyanogen Mod on this and it will be sweet Lollipop :)

      • +1

        Ofcourse I did! ^_^ kekeke

Hey guys, just some history on what you can expect. Not a bad thing, but if its a problem you may want to confirm ahead of time with Kogan to see if the same thing will happen.

I purchased this phone from Kogan through one of their ebay 5min deals for $500 in August. I think all that ordered received the the SM-g900i.

The phone that was sent was setup in Chinese so you needed to manually change it to english. Here is the link in case this happens.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJTny38_zGA

The box was also opened and a Kogan inspection seal was placed on it. Kogan claimed the phone was new, it looked pretty new, but who knows. And for the price at the time, I was fine with it.

Anyways chances are if I knew this ahead of time, I would have still been fine with it.

Past history will be no guarantee that this will happen here, but just in case I thought I would share.

    Cheers!

    • +3

I ordered from Kogan once and got an opened box with two layers of fake Samsung seals stuck on. There was dust in the box and the screen protector had dust underneath it.
      Never again.
      Buyer beware.

  • +1

I probably will get a lot of down votes, but the Nexus 5 was at this price range - 2 years ago…
This is a good deal compared to the rrp. But the rrp isn't realistic anymore…

    • Fair comments. Comparing the two I'd say the specs are with Samsung, but naturally the nexus has the Google fast updates advantage. Selling the S5 for $459 and the Nexus 5 for $399 is close to the actual worth of the phones.

      • Just flash Cyanogen Mod 12 on the S5 and you have lollipop. Its got powerful specs and from the videos I have watched, runs it like a dream.

    • I own nexus 5 and a bit disappointed with it:
      - SGS5 camera is MUCH better
      - Nexus 5 camera (android 5) suffers a LOT - frequent crashes, not connecting, slow auto-focus & it drains battery like crazy. I have to restart phone 1-2 times daily to get it running
      - Nexus 5 oleophobic coating is a joke - I got a noticeable 'smudged' area in the bottom-right corner (thumb scrolling spot) after a month or so

  • This is cheap :( And I paid $400 for a second hand one bugger it.

  • How is people experience with Kogan, I heard a lot of people received used phone, even DWI my friend received an used phone also.

    • Bought 2 from Kogan over the years, both were fine. Have heard many nasty stories but my experience has been good.

  • Thanks OP.
    Bought a black one.

  • Caved in to the pressure (from the wife) and bought one.

    10 black's remaining (9:50am)

    EDIT: 8 left (10:02am)
EDIT: Black GONE, 139 White's left

  • Damn, I really need this to be dual Sim but no way of finding out - no reply from kogan.

  • 15 left.

  • +3

    Anyone shipped?

    • +1

I was thinking the same thing. I paid on 03/03/2015 then got an email a couple of days later saying my order had been processed but I have not received email yet confirming dispatch status.

    • Yeah I ordered on 3rd as well but not been shipped yet. I have read somewhere it takes more then 2 weeks before they ship from HK and then another 3 days to Sydney. I asked the customer support at Kogan and each one gives a standard reply of 1-2 weeks plus 3 days for Sydney.

    • Found this on another forum "Instead, Kogan created a proprietary system and invited the world’s distributors to bid for his business. “They can log in and see we’ve sold, say, 127 Samsung Galaxy 5S phones that day, and whoever offers the best price wins the order.” At first, distributors globally were not amused. When Kogan went on a world trip to explain the new deal to about 40 of them in 2010, only two came on board. He left all with a user name and password and within a few months, about half had signed on. There’s evidence this works. At the time of writing, Samsung’s Android bestseller was offered on Kogan.com for almost $300 less than recommended retail prices."
So that is why it takes 2-3 weeks….they take orders from customers then find distributors…

      • +1

I suspected the same thing. They must do procurement after selling. Otherwise there is no other reason it takes two weeks to pack a mobile phone and ship. I could book a flight to Kogan HK, pick up the phone, fly back and get the phone faster than waiting for delivery. This makes online shopping experience worse. I don't think I will buy again from Kogan if I have to wait this long.

        • I know it is painful to wait but since I have to wait, I hope the phone does come in sealed and new condition as I have been reading on various forums and many people have received used/open box phones as opposed to being new.
Please do post on here as soon as anyone gets an email stating their phone has been shipped…

  • +1

My s5 just arrived! I only got the processed email, no shipping advice!
    Woo hoo

    • version?

    • What did you order?? And did you get a brand new one or opened box?? Version 900F or 900I?

      • +3

900i brand new in box. 16g black.

It is Korean I think and it updated to lollipop as soon as I had it running!

Kogan had opened box and resealed it with their own seal (don't know what for), but it really is brand new.

Power adapter was in package separately.

      • +2

Also I ordered the first day of sale

        • Thanks for the info….I am waiting impatiently …
If the box is opened it means it is a refurbished phone…new phones are always come sealed by Samsung and no company opens up new phones….but it doesn't really matter much….

        • +1

it is new,I'm sure of it luckily!

        • @slyfox:
No sign of my S5 yet….maybe White S5's are coming from a different supplier…
          Hopefully soon…

Impulse buy, just bought AT&T Nokia Lumia 635 from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186288
Let's see if it arrives faster than Kogan one even buying 10 days later :D

    • +1

Received mine, bought on first day. Black G900i from SS Taiwan, no shipping notification. The phone looks brand new.

  • +1

Got mine today, ordered on March 4th.

Looks brand new, came in the original Samsung box, but resealed with Kogan.

    • +2

Upd: phone is from Taiwan, model G900i.

Came with Android Kitkat, but immediately started downloading Lollipop update.

Nice bonus, got +50gb from Dropbox for two years.

      • Did you order black or white?
Also did you get a notification of it being shipped?

          • Black
          • No, just the 'Your order has been processed' message next day after the purchase
    • +1

Yeah got mine today too. It was opened and resealed by Kogan which had me worried that it could be refurbished phone. I downloaded Phone INFO app to check and it verified that it's an original phone manufactured Jan 2015.

      • oh wow…is the phone info app accurate though?

      • how many times did it say the headset and charger where connected?

        • the charger said 5 times but that would have been me plugging in a few times. Curiously the headset said 5 times and I never tried the audio socket. The phone looks brand new, I just wish that Kogan would send out the phones unopened. It might be Kogan ensuring that the phone is ok before shipping it out, I imagine that a small percentage of phones are defective and Kogan selling thousands of phones were getting defective ones sent back on regular basis.

        • @happybargains:

when I got mine, it had 3 for both, it must have been tested at the samsung factory before they ship them.

        • I received mine too….it said 4 times on both headset and charger.

        • +1

          @kiwiinoz:

all of these being the same number for both the charger and headset suggest it is a routine check done by Samsung

          my 2 cents

      • Hi HappyBargains,
Did you use this Phone INFO app?
        https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.…

  • +1

I received mine today, didn't get any prior notice. Its the 900i, the package came from HongKong. It came with a Kogan power plug on the side. Like other, the box was sealed with a kogan sticker, the original samsung seal was broken. The system was 5.0 when I checked, the phone looks new.
BTW It was in Chinese when I turned it, this site help me navigate to the language setting to change it to English. https://videotron.tmtx.ca/faqs/item/?lc=en&p=samsung_galaxys…

  • Just got an email from Kogan sent today from Hong Kong through Toll Express.
How long do they take to deliver?

    I ordered the White.

    • +1

      Me too!

Currently in Hong Kong delivered via Toll Express.

      ordered white as well

    • I didn't get any email notification but I ordered mine on 3rd March and received it yesterday through Toll.
I ordered a white as well.

  • Received my White S5 day before and it is new. Thanks OP for finding this deal.

  • Phone was delivered today but no one was home, so can pick up tomorrow.

    Very happy Wife!

  • Arrived today, no confirmation of postage (just the processing order email), left on door step, I would expect at least a signature on delivery (and a tracking number to confirm it has even been posted) for something costing $459!!!!

    • Say you never got it…pay backs a bitch kogan!

  • Bit peeved. The phone arrived alreayd updated to Lollipop by some guy at Kogan…it had a wifi ssid saved on it.

Looks new but because they've updated to Lollipop, I cant root the phone!

  • Mine arrived this earlier today as well without any prior shipping notification.
Brand new, but like others, opened & resealed with Kogan sticker.
Had to change language to English as it powered up with Chinese as default.

  • Has everyone received their order? I just got the shipping notice today.

    • Got it Thursday/collected Friday.

Took 3 days from Hong Kong.
