  • the model number in the fine print appears to be ASUS X550LN-XX031H

Scratching my head over where "X550LN-XX031H" came from. The catalog shows "F550ZE-XX031H", in which case these are the specs:

Worth comparing to this Toshiba deal from JB. That one's $150 cheaper with a better CPU, higher-end GPU, same RAM and HDD, same length warranty. Maybe the ASUS has better build quality, nicer screen or something - but unless that becomes clear, hard to be sold on this deal.

    • Everything I've read about the Toshibas says they are crap. Asus from what I've been reading tend to be one of the top laptop brands.
Feel free for others to disagree can online go by what I can find.

  • Just fixed up a few more things going by Jabba the Hutt's details.

That seems slightly expensive for a laptop with an i3 level CPU. While I personally like ASUS better, this is certainly a better choice: http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/toshiba-satellite-l50-…
    i7, 2GB graphics, $799.

Also note that both are gonna be SLOWWWW… with only HDD in them. Now that I'm used to SSD computers, HDD simply means unusable. (HDD is really only good for storage)

  • That link is still showing $1274 When does the $830 Start?

    • Tomorrow.

There is a $799 version as well http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/l…

Also, FYI you get a free game on A8 (and A10) products, seems to be missing the link on that product although is on the others. https://www.amd4u.com/gamepromo/

which one better? opinion please. buying one for my sister.

    Core i7 4500U ~3.0GHz
    2GB NVIDIA Geforce GT720M
    8GB RAM / 750GB HDD
    Wireless N / Bluetooth v4.0
    HDMI / USB3.0
    Windows 8 64bit
    1 Year Warranty

    • The one you posted has better specs.

      • Everything I read about acer is they are terrible…

        • not changing the fact that the specs are better, and my Acer stuff don't seem to have problems. (Nor do my Asus stuff)
It's all about luck really, and people who have problems with their products seem to be the loudest, and if no problem people simply shut up.

    • Not as good as the JB HiFi deal linked above imo by 'Jabba the Hutt' https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/toshiba/…
The configurations are about exactly the same except the Toshiba is $678, while Acer is $878. However your Acer is 200grams lighter.

The shoppingexpress one linked above must be the worst one imo with only 4GB RAM and an inferior graphics card for $800.

But the OP (treeman's) harvey normal deal has the best processor (AMD A8-7200P) http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/416/AMD_A8-Series_for_Noteb… but for $830. (Also 2.3kg)

Haven't looked at screen quality or battery life.

      • I fail to see how the AMD is the best CPU here, remember number of cores doesn't mean much if the application doesn't support it. I use FX8350 and really it's only comparable to i5 despite the 8 cores. (Not a i7 competitor as they wanted it to be)
Also the higher energy consumption of the A8 is terribly bad for use in laptops.

        • oh man, you are right

"The Core i5-5200U is 57% more energy efficient than the A8-7200P."

          rekt'd.
