Console OS Developer Release 1 (Android for PC) Now FREE for Everyone

880

Imagine if your PC could run all the million-plus Android apps that your phone and tablet can? And, what if those apps started to scale up and make your PC feel right at home with Android? Console OS is all about raising Android up to be your primary PC operating system.

Introducing Console OS with Android™ Inside. It's Android Remastered for the Desktop. With InstaSwitch, WindowFlinger, Hundreds of Features & Free Upgrades for Life!

We’ve taken Android apart, and put it back together for your PC. Console OS is a fork of Android designed to take everything that has made mobile awesome, and bring it back to your PC.

Watch this video to see just how good the software is.

Android is the most popular operating system in the world today. More new devices are born with Android than anything else. We’re taking the next step and bringing Android back to the desktop. Now, with that in mind, what if you could toggle between native Android, and native Windows? That’s what the Console OS Kickstarter was raising money to pull off. Thanks to the early backers who are helping us make Android awesome!

Install directly on your PC, or run it entirely from a USB external hard disk. All your apps, documents, even encryption can boot directly from a USB hard disk. Turn your PC into an Android, and never have to touch your Windows install. Want to boot Windows alongside Android from your internal drive? We fully support that, and our installer takes less than five minutes to pull that off, automagically.

How it used to be… The first 10,000 backers can get Console OS Pro for life for only $9.99. After that, $14.99. That’s still less the cost of one release of Console OS Pro for all the PCs in your family.

      One word, performance.

      Emulation vs Native.

      • Yet to find anything to justify that claim running Bluestacks…

    • +3

Because they both sucked with the apps I tried. Ie: crash to desktop anytime I tried to do anything in the app.

      • I've had zero crashes. Quite unusual for Android lel.

What the world needs is an android phone which has free android upgrades for life.

I think this is secretly funded by Microsoft to get people to upgrade to Windows 8.1

Seriously, the more I read the better it sounds.

    Too good to be true?

Would be great to get some ozbargainer feedback.

Can't install it myself since I am running virtual windows 7 on windows XP SP3. XP4EVA!

    Wut?

Imagine if your PC could run all the million-plus Android apps that your phone and tablet can?

    My tablet struggles after 1.

  • As this is really still an initial Developer Release (limited to a specific list of device platforms) and NOT a full public release, the title should perhaps be amended accordingly to avoid any misunderstandings.

This is work still very much in progress.

  • Interesting decision. I was going to back this mob and was comparing them to AMI DUOS ($10) since DUOS was available and this wasnt a month ago. Not sure how the backers will feel about paying for this and then its turn free. Reminds me of the Alanis Morrisette song Ironic.. hahaha

  • Thanks mate…looks interesting…I have a gigabyte windows tablet I might try it on.

When you go to register it says

    • Account Type : Console OS Standard Free

Did anyone see anywhere its saying Console OS Pro is free?

Not even sure whats the difference(if there is any) though.. :)

Console OS Pro – Taking Android Even Farther

Console OS Pro will add over twenty killer premium features, including InstaSwitch.InstaSwitch will eventually facilitate switching instantaneously between native Windows and native Android, on your x86-based tablet or PC.

      • Wondering how that would be implemented - I just assumed it would be a custom bootloader with a fancy Android icon.

  • Thanks Never heard of Console OS before, very interesting,I will try it out

I was also planning on buying AMIDuOS $10

You can get the free (and probably better) port here.
    http://www.android-x86.org/

You will need VmWare player or free VirtualBox to run it.

Bummer no support for the Surface pro 3

  • +1

I have a surface pro 3 (128GB i5, win 8.1 pro) and want to run a few play store apps on it. What app/emulator can I use - does something like that even exist?

  • This might make a nice addition to a gaming setup…

One of the strengths of Android is the amount of casual games to be had.

  • Why would people use Android on their PC, what's the benefit?

    • +1
      1. Testing purposes.
      2. Demonstation purposes (e.g. over a projector or kiosk)
      3. iOS users that must run X application.
      4. Access X application that offers no PC alternative (e.g. many task/todo applications).
      5. Have another trick in your box.
      • Exceptionally good answers, I could only think of 1 & 4. I'd do it once for the trivk in my box :D

  • I wish they'd get this (Console OS) to run okay in Virtualbox, even accepting that the graphics and general performance won't be as good as native performance. Virtualisation would allow it to run alongside the current OS, and would let it run anywhere, instead of being restricted to very specific machines like it is currently. That would be very handy for testing and development, especially when combined with snapshots, so that changes could be rolled back if they go bad.

I also wish they'd release a bootable ISO installer, rather than a ZIP with an .img file that's a USB installer.

  • I backed an ouya, rooted it. Installed some games. Been sitting in storage ever since not being used. I find a tablet easier and more stable.

  • How to install it. I have trouble installing it

    • Flash the image to a USB drive and boot from it.
