Dick Smith (VIC) - 15% off DELL Desktops and Notebooks

50

I just picked up a Dell Studio 15 notebook at DickSmith Chadstone, VIC. They are having a 15% off sale until 26/10/2009. For those who haven't seen the studio 15, it has a really nice design, is thinner and lighter than other brands in that form factor and price range, strong build quality, good battery life (WLED screen is up to 43% more efficient as well as more vibrant colour than CCFL), as well as good performance . They also have a COMPLETELY free windows 7 upgrade which I registered for at win7.dell.com. Other brands also have a free windows 7 upgrade but you have to pay $30 P&H. The system I got was:

  • PROCESSOR - Intel Centrino 2, Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz ⁄ 1066 FSB ⁄ 3MB Cache)
  • CHIPSET - Intel Cantiga PM45 Chipset

It's a good deal. But for $1379 (with the 8% autoclub discount), from the Dell website, you can get the Studio 15 with:
    P8700 processor
    500Gb hard disk
    Windows 7 home premium edition

  • Should that ram really be 4x1gb? Since when do laptops have 4 ram slots?

I'm actually thinking about getting a Studio 15, but probably closer to Christmas. They seem pretty good value.

  • The screen on this laptop is the only negative I see.
The Video Card is better than most but not great.

Dell Studio XPS 16 looks good.
    Awesome screen:
    Obsidian Black 15.6 " 1080p WUXGA (1920x1080) WLED Full HD Display w/ 2MP cam
Good Video Card (almost 2X as good as card in Studio 15):
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670

Doesn't look like DSE stock the Studio XPS 16.
    Pity.

    • Yeah The Studio XPS is awesome, especially if you get the RGB LED Screen (bit more expensive though). The WLED screen on the Studio 15 is still alot better than the CCFL screens that are in most of the other brand models at similar prices.

Also, I saw a lot of other models with 1GB graphics (not much better gpu), 4GB ram and a 32 bit OS which can only utilise 3.2GB anyway which is a bit of a waste (all above $1500). I find the Studio 15 is really well balanced notebook which most users would be happy with, especially for the price. There are slightly lower spec'd studio 15's models for around $1000 as well!
