[NSW, VIC] 3 Flight Lessons for $599 - Christmas Gift for Aviation Buffs @ Soar Aviation

Learn to Fly | Starter Package

If you’re sure aviation is for you but you’re not quite ready to commit to a full course.
The Learn to Fly- Starter Package is a great place to start. Here you will complete your first three lessons
and develop your basic aviation skills. Each lesson will be recorded in your logbook and hours can be counted
for Recreational Pilot Licence, Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence.

Effects of Control
First you will start in the classroom and cover the theory of the basic effects of control, then step a real dual controlled aircraft and demonstrate how an aircraft behaves in the air, what happens when the aircraft slows down, speeds up, climbs, descends, how to read your altitude, airspeed and much more.

Straight & Level
Straight and Level is your second lesson and the most often used. Once you have completed the takeoff and climbed out of the airport, you will be looking forward to level off at an altitude and cruise for however long you want before coming down to land. This takes up maximum time of your flying experience and is considered one of the most enjoyable parts of flying.

Climbing & Descending
In this lesson you will learn different ways to achieve a climb and descend. After takeoff the first thing you will do is climb out and depending on circumstances, like obstacles and runway length, you will choose to climb out at different attitudes. You will learn 3 types of climbs, best angle of climb, best rate of climb and cruise climb. On ground you will learn different application of these and how to achieve it. Attitudes that you will need to set and hold to achieve the climb.
Your starter package will be broken down into three components:

Lesson One Effects of control

Lesson Two Straight and level

Lesson Three Climbing and descending

You mention Recreational Pilot Licence, Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence…
Following this intro course, what are the requirements for these three licenses?

    • +2

Recreational Pilot Licence - Basically you fly light, two seater aircraft. Good if you live out in the country and just like to go for the odd fly for leisure or to travel short distances. Minimum 20 hours before you are issued with this licence.
      You CANNOT:
      • Fly aircraft bigger than two seaters.
      • Fly in controlled airspace (capital cities, and some smaller cities with big airports such as Albury, NSW or Townsville, QLD).
      • Fly at night.
      • Fly in cloud.
      • Do aerobatics.
Note that you are able to add some of these on as 'endorsements' to your recreational licence, for extra training and fees.

Private Pilots Licence - More expensive (due to the tests, medical, and a minimum or 35 flight hours), but allows you to fly larger aircraft, and not as many restrictions as above. It also requires you to have an Aviation Medical, pass a CASA multiple choice test, and a flight test.

Commercial Pilots Licence - This is the minimum licence to be employed anywhere as a pilot. You need at least 150 hours behind the controls before attempting the flight test, plus a more strict medial, and you need to complete 6 CASA tests.

Click here for a more detailed description of each of the licence types, from the website of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The rules have changed recently, so let me know if I have got anything wrong.

  • What is the normal prices for these 3 lessons? And how long does each lesson take?

When I started out a few years ago the going rate was $180 per hour, and you can complete all these courses in less than 3 hours…

    • Hi Kiwi,

The going rate for 3 lessons plus briefing time is $772. Please let me know if you have any questions.

BEWARE. ENTIRE CHECKOUT PROCESS USES INSECURE MOBILE WEBPAGES. CREDIT CARD ONLY ACCEPTED.

    • The security issue is real.

After adding a Lesson to your cart and clicking 'view cart', manually change the URL to use SSL for checkout by changing the http to https
      https://www.soaraviation.com.au/cart/

This will establish the secure connection (eg. green lock displayed in the URL bar).

The Cart and Checkout buttons will maintain the secure connection, but don't click page or nav links as they're all hardcoded with "http://" and will take you out of the secure connection.

Soar Aviation should get this fixed, at minimum it involves prefixing the links to the cart with "https://", something that could be done in mere minutes.

  • What kind of cost on average is it to obtain a Recreational Pilot Licence? Also what are the costs involved in renting aircraft?

    • Hi Baraphile,

The cost of obtaining a RPL would be somewhere around $6500-$7500. Once you have achieved a RPL you can hire an aircraft such as a foxbat for $149 ph.

      Regards,
      Soar Aviation
