Sounds like a nice picnic option for kids.

  • -4

I anticipate chronic cases of the fruit squirts after that visit

Just pondering - I imagine they use some sort of pesticides on the fruit on the tree, which is why we wash them before eating at home. If you're scarfing them down straight from the tree, you don't get the "benefit" of washing - is that something to cause concern?

    • +4

ERM it clearly states with no chemicals used?

    • +3

I've been pick fruits for years, great day out. most people eat heaps there, never heard on radio/TV any epidemic :) certainly not my family or friends.
$8/kg is very cheap, most places charges $10~$15 and an extra $10 entry to cover the "picnic" cost.

    • +2

i use to cherry pick as a job. ate as many as i wanted without washing. never had the squirts. this was about 15 years ago.

    • Not sure why people are down voting. I had some friends recently go to a u-pick cherry orchid, my mate had some weird rash come up on his hands after picking cherries, you could see a film over the cherries. Certainly some bad chemicals are used.

If you're going for non organic I suggest washing before you eat.

  • +5

misleading title. Click bait alive and well here. Be honest and put the $8 per kilo in your title

    • +7

You can eat there for free. Other U-pick cherry farms will charge for entry.

      • +8

Im sure the business will survive by encouraging scabs to go there for free entry, then pick and eat only on site and then leave. $8 / kg is a bargain for picking your own cherries to take home. Whats wrong with putting that in the title?

        • +1

You're calling me a scab? This is Ozbargain!

      • +3

Surely they don't encourage you to just turn up and eat all their produce…

      • Then the title should be eat cherries for free, rather than cherry picking for free (unless you are suggesting that OzB should just pick and then leave the cherries on the ground)

Besides - when I used to go to Young (NSW) to pick cherries - I was never charged an entry fee. Maybe Victorians are just unlucky

  • +1

Nice. Anyone knows similar offer in NSW/ACT?

    • +3

Try Young - about 2hr away from Canberra.

      Here is an example
      http://www.allambieorchard.com/

no entry fee and free to eat and $6/kg to take home

      • But it's NOT all you can eat apparently…From their website:

"…Still no entry fee*** and a modest $6 per kilo that you pick. What you pick, you pay for.

*** This does not mean that it is a " free feed". Modest sampling is encouraged, a special Munchers/ Grazing Licence is being considered as an option for the more hungry in 2015 .
*** Deliberate destruction of trees branches , and buds will not be tolerated .name /car plate details gazetted to other orchards in the area. ( The buds of next years cherries are already on the same branch!)"

I did this as a job for 2 seasons in the early 90's after school had finished.

as a 17 year old, and making $150 a day working from dawn to dusk, was awesome.

you don't want to eat what you are picking with out washing them first. this is due to the herbicides and pesticides they use.

Also, they will relegate you to the crappy varieties of cherries.

I've only ever eaten cherries once since then.

    • -2

due to the herbicides and pesticides they use.

It says they don't use chemicals…

      • +3

        define "chemicals"

      • so what do they use?

  • -1

Bit of a trek from the city - does anyone else recommend any other activities in Seville?

    • +3

Lots of wineries in the area.

Also there's the Dandenong Ranges… waterfalls, bushwalks, cafes and tea rooms..

Usually a market on somewhere in the ranges on Sundays.

Lots of op shops and antique stores scattered around.

Olinda, Sassafras, and Warburton have good old-fashioned candy stores.

      • Thanks a heap :)

Seville Hill Estate winery is fantastic.

Also Elmswood Estate has an amazing panoramic view.

    • Had been to cherry picking few weeks back…a must visit for us while returning from anything that side of the city is the Kalista Tea Rooms at 103 Monbulk Road, Kallista, Victoria. Try the variety of teas they have there. Scones are awesome as well with the berry sauce.

  • Missus wants to go in early Jan as we're busy during December… I said to her,..the cherries will be all gone, Ozbargained by then even by next week!

  • No white cherries, or it is still too early in the season for them?

    • I always wear a Blue tie when picking white Cherries

  • lol. i'm picturing the place packed with people and their kids, just picking, eating, and spitting the seeds anywhere on the ground, their tummies getting bigger. They belch and leave empty-handed (well, hand rubbing on tummy).

  • Is each person within the group you rock up with, obligated to purchase $8 each.

Went cherry picking down at mornington years ago.. each person had to purchase min of 1kg @ $12 or $13.. was expensive since in total 5 ppl and got sick of eatting a fridge full of cherries.

  • We've been getting cherries from Young at $8 per kilo at Hurstville and last week I saw cherries (Australian but I don't know where from) for $14 for 2 kilos at Roselands.

    • +3

Last year at roselands was better, $4.99 a kg. They were competing with coles

  • -2

Just eat it all and pay $0.

    • +6

That'll help the grower wont it…If Colesworth doesnt screw them, we may aswell hey? I suggest to everyone that does go to these places, show your appreciation and throw an extra fiver their way for the "sampling" you'll do along the way. Their hard work in producing fresh food for us should be rewarded.

      • +1

yeah, because cherries just don't grow on trees

  • -4

$8kg is not a bargain. It should be much cheaper since you are doing the work for them. Aldi is currently selling cherries for $6kg. That is a bargain to have a picnic without doing work.

    • +4

How about all those cherries you eat for free? Try doing that at Aldi

    • +1

The Aldi cherries are small and mediocre, one variety only. Cherry picking is an outing, you won't save much generally but it can be a lot of family fun. We used to do it as an annual family trip until petrol became a major issue. Do the right thing by the orchard, enjoy the experience and the fruits of your labours.

      • but it can be a lot of family fun.

        Are you serious?

        • Yes, I don't find anything funny in that. It is subjective what anyone find fun in. Few families can stay inside their home watching movies for the whole day or playing games and few enjoy outdoors in a pool, sea or garden.

I think it is fun to go for a fruit pick garden, but I don't think everyone should or would love it. But that is fine and I respect that.

    Flamenco!!!! opps…wrong Seville

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is a duck. $8kg is not a bargain.

    • If ducks understood arithmetic they'd be able to work out that if you eat a kilo and buy a kilo the price is halved. That's obviously a bargain even if you don't factor in the joy of sunshine, picking the best fruit and sampling different varieties to get the type you like. Quack.

      • A person that eats 1kg while picking will be buying much more than 1kg. I would imagine most people would buy over $3kg.

        • True. And not many will be able to eat a kilo of cherries while picking even over a period of a few hours if our experience is typical but that wasn't the point of my comments.

    • -6

Agree not a bargain $6/kg near orange nsw..no entry fee

      • Link? Obviously it's only a bargain if you live near the orchard, the fruit is good quality, and you place a value on picking your own. Claro? Let me guess, you live nowhere near either place.

        • For most people cherry picking is not a bargain at any price (travel costs ) but is a great outdoor experience for the family . We have enjoyed it most seasons for the last ten years and have visited orchards at Bathurst ,Orange and Young. Going rate $ 5-6 kg. couple of the orchards asked for entry fee per person this year in orange .

        • @Memo14:

but is a great outdoor experience for the family .

You need to get out more..

      • memo14, care to provide the address? Because I've tried looking for one and have not been sucessful.

        • He was referring to the IGA supermarket

  • If you cbf picking cherries you can buy them at Blue Hills (nearby) for $8 per kg.

We bought some last weekend and they are fantastic!

  • +4

$3 per KG with free entry at "TOM AND ERIN POWELL", but it is in Beechworth, it might be worth only if you visit around that area.

  • +1

The mahogany ones have been scientifically proven to ease gout - might go get some

    • If you know anything the first thing about science, you will know that nothing is "scientifically" or even "clinically" "proven". Supported perhaps, but not proven. Although having said that, all fruits are great for health!

  • We have been to sunnyridge strawberry farm in morninton peninsula, the best strawberries i ever had in my life, juicy and tasty. Its taste so sweet.

Checked the link and this is what I saw… beware guys.. http://i.imgur.com/SfLef2j.jpg

Just bought cherries tonight at the fruit shop for $5/kg. In Woolies next door the price is $8.88/kg

  • +1

Can you list the address of any in NSW, esp if near orange/bathurst? I knew of one but it does not exist anymore.

Please provide an address, esp to the guy who negged this deal.

    • Looking for a place near Sydney too.

      • +2

        Found one, although near young.

        Address: 3725 Olympic Highway, Wombat.
        Cost: $6/kg
No entry fee. You pay for what you pick.

        http://www.allambieorchard.com/

        • Not all you can eat tho…see my post above

        • Thanks Mate.

  • THANKS MATE!

  • +1

    Has anyone actually been there?

    • Yes, today

It's totally fake ….entry is $10 per person n cherries is $10 per kg

  • I can't find out where they advertise as free entry.

  • Last week we just spent $150 on entry fee for the farm nearby and $10/kg to take home. We thought it was fun and wanted to come back. Can't believe this is free. Thanks so much ozbargain.

  • This sounds like it would make an awesome date idea. Take note lads.

    • they are not dates, they are cherries.

  • Feedback: the experience was terrible. There was nothing edible, most of the fruits were rotten even though they weren't ripe yet. We wasted time looking for a decent tree but there was none.

Ended up going back to the farm last week to buy the cherries and other yummy berries. The other place cost $10 entry but you can stay at one tree and just eat for half an hour. 99% of the fruits on the tree were perfect.

    • Which farm?

  • Went today and it was chockablock. Very hard to find good cherries. Wasn't worth the savings for the cherries. They're mostly tart and we could barely fill the kilo. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

    • I couldn't even find one to taste. They were mostly rotten.

  • Absolutely fake. Went there yesterday. There is an enter fee of $10 for adults and $5 for kids and cherries is $10 per kg.
FREE ENTRY IS FOR PICKING SOUR CHERRIES—- but u have to buy min of 3 kgs @ $8 kg
    It's a scam n time waster——SCAM

  • Can someone please guide me on how to add a pic to the comments??

  • Went there today. They are closed for the season
