The App works for ANYONE. You don't need to be a Telstra Customer to use it. Telstra just sponsored it along with City of Sydney.

(Inside Tip: Midnight Messages work with all numbers, including INTERNATIONAL… So go crazy sending your Midnight Messages to your international friends too. Although they will get it based on the time you select your timezone. Still it's free ;)

  • I can confirm it's available to non Telstra customers.

  • Just grabbed one thanks OP, never heard of it before but sounds cool.

  • damit why am i overseas right now =-[

    • You can still download the app? It's not region locked I don't think.

      • dont you need a text msg reply

        • Oh you mean for the Cardboard. Yes.

I thought you ment to send your free midnight messages to your friends and family.

Refreshed the deal and it shows up android and ios… weirdddd

You could always get some tin foil and stay in your room where it's safe.

    • +12

      It's…a piece of cardboard

      • +2

If you wrap the piece of cardboard in tin foil then you will be safe

        • nah mann..you guys are doing it wrong. You wrap the piece of cardboard in tin foil then put in the safe…then you will be VERY safe.

    • You can always sign up and live in the cardboard box. No-one will look for you in there.

  • Cheers OP, got one :)

Also thanks, I can now spam people at midnight on NYE for free ;)

  • Thanks OP, grabbed one on boost. Hopefully they'll deliver!

  • +1

    What's a cardboard?

    • +3

A brown stiff paper. Much thicker than your average printing paper.

  • Worked on my BlackBerry 10 phone via Android app.

    Thanks!

    • +1

      blackberry still lives!

  • +1

    Thanks Woody nice find

  • Worked on iphone 5 via iphone app. Thanks OP!

  • google cardboard is good for a cheap VR experience.
pity there are few applications for it.
maybe devs can go crazy with a killer app…augmented reality that beats google glass eg. terminator style warfare using bluetooth connected weapons, 3D movies streamed via netflix style platform, go pro 3D using drones over unique scenery like live gun battles or over an erupting volcano.

Says out of STOCK for POST.

Have been put on queue and will let me know when it's available

    • Ditto.

It's 'if' available, so I assume it's if they can't post out certain addresses, or not hand them over.

  • Sydney pickup working fine.

  • Got SYD :)

  • Out of stock for POST :(

  • Got SYD too thanks OP

  • FYI you can use Google Cardboard with iOS devices, there are a couple of apps. Although the 3.5" and 4" screens don't provide a very immersive experience.

    • so can 5.5 inch screens work well with this device?

      • Good question, not sure if a 6+ will physically fit. I think it's too wide.

The 6 will definitely fit as it's about the same size as a HTC One M7 which is listed. And I've seen friends use their iPhone 4/5 in it.

Edit: Just saw the comment from the OnePlus user. That phone is wider than the 6 Plus, so it'll definitely fit

  • is it worth it going to the store in the city to pickup since postage is out of stock?

the cost for the train ticket, you can just buy one of these for $5

    where is store located?

    • Probably not, only good if you go past a store e.g. On way to work.

      • -2

how much a ticket to go the station there? ie a return trip..

also which station are they closest?

and what is the cheapest online store we can buy this cardboard device from and what is the price?

        • I wouldn't have a clue since I'm from beautiful Adelaide! Sorry

  • Out of stock now

    • People still seem to be able to order for store pickup?

  • So once it is reserved we can pickup any time?

  • is postage out of stock for all state?

so postage is only if you live outside of sydney or melbourne?

    they only allow pickup?

    • +1

You certainly have too many unanswered questions :)

The pickup option is for all over the country and based on their description it seems like you should only choose pickup if you live outside of Sydney and Melbourne. I may be wrong but anyhow pickup is out of stock.

The pickup in Sydney is from the Telstra store on George street and the closest train station is Wynyard. You can pickup anytime before 5PM on 9th Jan once you got the confirmation SMS. It is unto you if you want to spend money on train ticket but certainly if you have Opal card you can go on a Sunday to pickup and just spend $2.5 on the travelling.

If you want to buy it from eBay or other vendors you can get is for less than $5 shipped to your home on Tinydeal or eBay but you need to wait for a month for it to arrive before you can try it. Also the one Telstra is giving might be a bit better quality than those on tiny deal or eBay.

So decide and order it before it goes out of stock in Sydney as well.

      • -1

        thanks..

does the opal card cost money to buy?

so $2.5 is a return trip?

can pickup on new years eve? since trains might be free….

        • I think the telstra shop will not open on new years eve.

        • The message I got said it needs to be picked up by 5pm 9th Jan.

        • -1

Depending on how far away you have to travel, it could be a waste of time and money.

I think opal cards cost $2 to buy

        • -1

Opal cards are "free", but initially you need to buy it with minimum $40 of credit. Later on you can top up the credit on the same card.

        • @netslicer:
I could put whatever I liked on the card when I bought it. I chose $20 for the Amex promo.

        • @roughana:

          isn't minimum $10?

          I doubt u can put $2.50

  • +5

If you have any questions, feel free to reply here.

I was lead designer on the app.

    • Then you probably check the associated checkbox. Hope you can help me with the answers for the below questions.

      1. Is the code received via SMS a generic code?
      2. What do they check in store when we go for pickup and what details they store to identify if a person has already picked up his cardboard?

I am planning to pickup over the weekend and I am worried about people brodening this before that.

      • +1

        Code is Unique,
They checked SMS on my phone and went in a got one for me
        (Sydney store)

      • I'm not associated with Telstra. Can't check the box :). I just designed it at the agency.

        1. No. Code is unique.
        2. They check the SMS on your phone basically. And they check if your registered for Midnight Messages in the database AFAIK.
        • I picked up this morning and they checked if I got the SMS and asked me to delete the SMS in front of them. They didn't looked for my detail in the system or even entered my details in the system.

I don't know how they can be so sure that deleting the SMS will suffice as you can easily recover the SMS using free tools.

    • does this work with 5.5 inch phones like oneplus one?

      • Yes, Works really well with OnePlus One,
