25% off Shipping with ShopMate, Mail Forwarding Service from Aus Post

470
XMAS2014

The new mail forwarding company presented by Aus Post, not sure about their service. Their standard shipping cost seems slightly higher than shipito. The 25% discount makes it reasonable. Their warehouse is located in oregon.

Quoted from official website:
International shipping rates are A$24.95 per parcel, plus A$5.95 per 500g. The minimum chargeable weight is 500g, with 500g increments thereafter.

Repacking service is available for 5 dollar, in order to minimize the volume. However, consolidation option seems not available in the system.

Damn, they make Amazon's own international freight charges seem positively cheap.

    • +9

That's cause they are cheap freight charges.

I've always found it funny that I can get something delivered from Amazon from the US/UK significantly cheaper than I can sending something across Australia.

      • +2

        Its all about volume.

Amazon send thousands of pallets of product out a day, which is all pre sorted and ready to go. Your individual parcel on the other hand has to be sorted, and transported, sorted again and sent out for delivery.

If you send mammoth volumes of product a day, yes you could get your cost price very low (like some companies that send out wine pay <5 bucks per case anywhere in the country.)

        • +1

Yeah I know, I wasn't meaning the price that I pay personally to send something across the country though.

I meant shipping costs in general in Australia domestically. There are some cheap deals from time to time postage wise from companies, but with that some of the postage costs would just be included in the price (much like 'free' shipping, where in reality the price of the item has usually been padded to include that postage price, or part of it).

      • Often gets to my house faster as well as beating them on price too.

    • My wife ordered a dog toy from amazon.. $1.58USD for postage, with tracking, and it was a 750gram toy.. I can see why auspost is going broke.. lol.. makes me want to order more stuff from amazon..

This past half year i've been ordering more and more from Amazon. I'd probably go nuts online shopping if I lived in America.

Bleh, I didn't read the post. Nothing to see here…

    • +2

Hahaha… go the negs. I meant "I misread the OP and misunderstood it, please ignore my comment" - ah the joys of the English language. I originally wrote some comment about shipito not realising there was already something about it in the post.

      • Better to leave the original comment and add, 'Edit: Bleh, I didn't read the post. Nothing to see here…', to the bottom of it then.

        • Yeah, my bad. I tend to delete the original comments to try and hide my shame :-P

Postage isn't the only charge, it's P&H with H being Handling. Staff still pick and pack most parcels in warehouses.

Amazon just do it cheaper (by not paying for the staff waiting to tag in and out in security line ;-p) and are extremely effecient, probably number 1 at it.

They're not just efficient, their factory is something Henry Ford would have blown his wad over.

I always thought they manually chose box sizes depending on the items in your order by eye-balling but the whole thing is automated. Then there's some serious box-packing going on.

Pretty cool. Pity they don't ship most of their stuff to Australia though.

      • Noice!

Pretty cool video, I watched it twice!

      • Still use humans. Not good enough.

      • good video PR. its not as advanced as you think. Its just business processes streamed lined, the technology just helps.

Shipito still seems cheaper even after the 25% discount.
Just recently sent 10 kg using shipito for $92.68 with TNT Express. Shipped on Friday and arrived the following Monday.

With those ShopMate rates it would be $107.96 (from 25% off full price 143.95)

  • Is it possible to use these guys to ship a $2000 telescope and tell these guys to mark my item has a $500 gift telescope so I can avoid paying for 10% customs?

    • +3

meh. Customs is just another govcorp scam anyway….

    • Two things:
      1. Extremely unlikely that a legitimate parcel forwarding service will do this.
      2. Even IF they did, how awesome would it be if your mirror/lens to broke in shipping (not altogether unlikely), and you only got $500 compensation?

      • Shipito complete the customs declaration according to the customer's instructions, just like a diligent shipping agent should.

        • Ah yes you're correct. But with Shipito if something goes wrong and you have to make an insurance claim, if your declared amount differs at all from the actual amount you paid (that you have to prove with an invoice) then they won't pay you out at all as you can't prove it's the same item. This is what their terms state anyway, I've never had to deal with that.

  • How is it possible for a company like urban outfitters to provide shipping for such a good price. $5 shipping for orders under $50, and free for over 50$?

    • They are buying customers.

      • UO take months to arrive (average 2). Amazon takes me on average 2 weeks.
      • Thats not true, I have ordered from them many times. Longest for me in Melbourne with standard delivery has been 2 weeks. For 2 day delivery its $12.95, 1 day delivery $20.

        • You didnt say what was not true, yet you downvote me. I know you can pay extra for quicker shipping, doesnt mean UO dont send things by USPS and take months though. I have also ordered alot from amazon and on average, they take on average a good 2 weeks, based off about 6-8 transactions from amazon.

        • @thedude23: lol, I didnt down vote you

    Code didn't work for me

    • +3

Instead of working out why it didn't, just down voted?

  • I'm tempted to neg this "deal", by the op's own words, this is reasonable with the discount. Bt since when was reasonable a deal on ozbargain?

  • Well I will give it a shot, bought 7 Bumgenius cloth nappies on a 7-for-6 deal $94.50 USD (Australian price $39 each). Official shipping weight 42.3 ounces for the lot. Hopefully they will be crammed into a small envelope to minimise volume, should be $32.10 shipping with discount.
When I have bought them from eBay resellers the minimum shipping cost was $80,the US manufacturer has exclusive supplier deals to keep non US prices inflated.
Any idea when the code expires OP?

  • Has anyone used this service? I was planning to get a couple of tablet computers but just read this in the FAQ:

What goods can’t be sent to Australia using ShopMate?
Goods that cannot be sent via ShopMate include:

    food or perishable goods
    items requiring cold storage shipping
dangerous or prohibited items as determined by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. These commonly include >perfume, items containing lithium-ion batteries, ink cartridges and aerosols.

Looks like most electronics is out if they won't carry lithium ion battery items??

  • -1

    DO NOT USE!!

I bought some items that were unfortunately partial shipped in three separate packages.
As they don't consolidate packages this is going to cost a fortune to send. Tracking states the packages have all arrived, and been signed off on days ago, however I have received no notification about them at all.

I sent them an email, only to receive an automatic reply stating that it will take them ages to respond as they are getting lots of emails, and that it may take up to 5 days for packages to be processed… hooray.

After looking them up to see if other people have been having issues I have read a lot of horror stories… being charged over 150 to send a handbag, terrible customer service, parcels getting lost from america to aus etc etc…

Really wish I has just gone with shopito or something, ugh.
