  • op what are some tips on buying a good uke?

    • +1

      Size
      Soprano for small hands/fingers
      Concert for average hands/fingers
      Tenor for large hands/fingers

In terms of quality… entry level ukes are usually made from laminate woods and range from $70 to $200. High end ukes are usually always made from solid wood, such as the Koa Pili Koko's, and start from about $200 and up to $2000+ for a custom handmade Hawaiian uke. Solid wood ukes are favoured for higher end instruments because of the better tone they usually produce. Types of solid wood include Koa and it's close relative acacia (which is what the Koa Pili Koko's are made from), spruce, rosewood, cedar, mahogany and many more exotic varieties.

The best advice I can give for buying a good uke is to make sure it comes with a full ukulele setup. This involves lowering the height of the strings so that they are easier to press down onto the fretboard, particularly valuable for beginners. A music shop will usually charge $60 to do this - I throw it in for free with every uke I sell. A proper ukulele setup includes a number of other checks and adjustments which you can read about here: http://www.ukuleleplace.com.au/free-ukulele-setup/

And my final piece of advice is stay away from $40 toy ukuleles unless you are buying for a child - these are usually poorly built and go out of tune quite easily.

      • Do you sell any with electronic pickup?

        • No sorry, they don't have pickups.
