Uber have partnered up with Virgin Australia to offer users $40 Uber credit when they book a flight with Virgin Australia.

Need to book a flight by 14 November for departure between 1 January 2015 and 7 October 2015. The Uber promo code will be emailed to you by 21 November by Virgin. Says that the Uber code is unique so can only be used once.

The credit is only available to first time Uber users. Probably no first time users left on OzBargain but may get you a free ride to the airport if you give the code to your travelling companion.

EDIT: Looks like Virgin cut this promotion short due to a customer backlash against partnering with an organisation like Uber that's deliberately trying to avoid taxi regulations.

I think it's nearly time for Uber to pivot their marketing approach.

    • It would be interesting to see how much market penetration they've gotten by now. They've basically partnered with everyone so it's hard to think of anyone that actually hasn't heard of Uber. I wonder what the life time value actually is for these customers that sign up to Uber for the free promo codes (especially Ozbargain customers =p)

I think a key market for them would be to try tap into the lucrative corporate market where employees are expensing their cab charges to the firm. Problem is, in this era of cost-cutting, it would be a tough sell for employers to accept black car charges whilst UberX isn't frequent enough for employees to actually want to use them when a free cab is readily available.

      • All valid points, but it's not a tough sell for employers to accept taxi charges back to the company. In fact, when Uber started, I had some cabbies tell me that employers were encouraging users to use Uber because they charged 5% instead of Cabcharges' 10%. That's changing apparently so starts to remove incentives. However, don't underestimate the appeal of Uber's "jump out of the cab when you get there" approach instead of having to sit and wait for the credit card to clear when you're running late in the morning or have worked late and want to get in your home as soon as possible.

  • This has now expired as it closed on 11 November 2014, not 14th. Could the OP please update this. Thanks.

    • Ahh yep. Looks like they cut short the promotion due to customer backlash!
