  • Is it just me or are sat nav's a thing of the past. Every smart phone has a decent map navigation system these days and you don't have to buy a new map for every country you go to.

Agreed, no deal especially for that price!

and you have seen these cheaper? Please provide link.

I just thought that $199 seemed dear! I'm not even sure if it is a good one or not…

    • +4

i thought the same until i went on a ~900km roadtrip. the phone gets very hot and shuts down when stuck in a window mount under the sun and constantly uses data.

for short journeys the phones are great but for long distance stuff - i'd always go a standalone gps

Offline maps (e.g. HERE maps on Lumia devices) help with the data usage/heat, but just using the GPS at all can make some phones heat up.

  • Lol unless you buy a cheap chinandroid, then you are lucky if it puts you in the right city.

I would only use a dedicated sat nav..
i just dont like using my mobile for navigation - Gets too hot, loses signal, calls keep coming in.
Ive heard good reviews about the 'Here' navigation so picking up a cheap device like a lumia 630 (currently on sale for 89) to use for navigation and a backup mobile might be a good idea.

plus your battery in your phone dies earlier if using it as GPS

Dedicated GPS for me (recently purchased Tom Tom 600)

PS - the screen and responsiveness of the 600 screen well worth the extra $ in my seasoned ozbargainer opinion

  • Bought a go50 for $160 dse 20% off ebay sale couple of months ago that never arrived got money back.
There are conflicting stories on Go 50-60 series aren't being made any more and there is a new series that according to some sales dudes should have been released last month.

Yeah not too sure whats happening with Tomtom.. Seems like they are phasing out the Go line..
Wanted to buy another Go500 after mine was stolen, but most places stopped stocking it..
Thought it might be due to promoting the Go50 and 60 which are cheaper versions of the 500 and 600 without the capacitive touchscreen and the windscreen dock.

    • Edit everything I wrote above was about the 500-600 models from what I have read the 50-60 have plastic screens where the 500-600 have glass

  • I drive trucks in Perth metro, owned a few GPS.

After trial'n a few brands I owned a TT for a few years and liked what if offered, it crapped out earlier in the year so needed a new one and immediately went for another TT, got the "Go 600" (from GG), they'd changed the interface, whilst the guidance was good the map had allot of errors etc etc etc, hated it so returned it and tried the Garmin 2557LMT, in reverse the map was good but the guidance was crap, amongst other issues.

I'd always heard bad things about them, warned to stay away, however the old bloke at GG talked me into trying a Navman (MY600LMT), can always return it, I don't know why the brands bagged out so much but its the best unit I've ever owned

Navman are crap, so slow in the menu because its running windows ce

      • "so slow"
I found the opposite with the latest models of all 3 brands, only 3 months ago

Like I said, Navman's always gotten a bad wrap however from my experience, whilst none of them are perfect, it out performs the other two

    • i also got the MY600LMT
its my first gps so nothing really to compare it with
but i am too happy with it, good to hear it outperformed those

      • I just returned a Navman MY600LMT as it was way to dim and the voice is a bogan. Give me a TomTom anyway (I'm still using an old Go 720).

A dedicated GPS doesn't get interrupted by calls coming in. As others said, it doesn't use mobile data - especially important if travelling internationally. P platers are not allowed to use phones, even hands free, but I think GPS are OK as they are drivers aids (IIRC)

I just got a dedicated GPS from officeworks (an Ozbargain) and it is terrific now that it is running Igo Primo. I don't really use it for guidance, more to ensure I stay within posted speed limits as it can warn if you even go 1km/hr over.

In the past I have used Ndrive, TomTom, route66 and Navman. TomTom was the only one with sensible routing choices around where I live.

  • What's a lifetime maps upgrade actually mean? Lifetime of the unit or my lifetime? :)

    • you may as well -they might ask you to have an sd card slot and a micro usb connector in your body to get updates after their hardware obsolescence. :-)

    • Lifetime means as long as they support it - count on about 5 years.
