  • Not an expert but are these extremely good for it's price or is there something better?

  • +2

    Good value this is.

I recently bought just the Receiver on its own for this price which was good value

  • Very great value but the dvd player looks like a deal breaker.

    • Why is that?

      • -1

        Coz, what year is it?

        • Dunno, how about we call it the year of the reality check!

        • -1

          2014

    • +2

Most of us would already have existing bluray players (eg PS). Can't we just exclude dvd player from the setup?

      • That would be nice. Or replace it with Bluray player.

        • +5

Or replace it with Bluray player.

          Or a pony…

Get cracking on that letter to Santa bro, only 67 sleeps til Xmas! :p

  • I like the price but I need more HDMI's, any suggestions anyone. I already have those splitter boxes and they are annoying. As a genuine tightars* I can't bring myself to pay $800 for 6-8 HDMI's. Which is my main reason for buying a home theatre box.

    • +1

Why the need for so many hdmi's? You could connect some of the hdmi's direct to the tv then have audio out to the reciever via optical, then connect the remaining hdmi's to the reciever.

      • Exactly.

      • optical audio from the tv to the reciever isnt 5.1 though

      • "hdmi's direct to the tv then have audio out to the reciever via optical"

You do not want to do that unless you know it's just for simple devices like TV set top boxes. You'll lose all the benefits of high bitrate formats usually found in blu-rays.

      • TV only has two hdmi. I have PVR. WDTV. Android box. Apple TV. WiiU and blue ray player. That makes 6. Sometimes I plug my camera and computer into the HDMI.

        • +1

With that many you will have to just cope with a splitter box! (Without forking out heaps of cash)
Maybe get a better splitter with a remote or something?

        • +4

          Buy a better tv

        • You can use all of those then. 4 + Wii U Component into the amp, and one into the TV. The audio from the TV will send back down the HDMI into the amp, so no need for optical or audio out.

      • With my TV I could only get a stereo output on the amp if going HDMI to TV and then optical to amp. I would google before buying on that basis.

  • I don't need the speakers or the player. Is it still a good price for just the amp?
Also does it have the room adjustment (distance) feature

    • +1

The very cheapest I've seen that amp was for ~$200. I think I picked it up for $225. They go on ebay new for ~$255 at the moment.

So yeah $269 for the package is a very, very good price.

      • +2

On price alone, decent Amp,but depending on what speakers you have, you may need something more powerful and robust. This type of Amp/receivers are designed to handle that type of set up. I have large front speakers (10" base drivers), so a few years back I bought an Onkyo TXSR701 Receiver for around $2K.Pre-HDMI days. (THXselect(http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/review/onkyo/tx-sr701/221581…)).
At the time and I believe even now Onkyo give you the best bang for your buck, look them up.

        • This is the system I'm using purchased from aldi :-)
          http://artim.co/home-theatre-system/

I'm pretty happy with its sound quality and Speaker power. But the amp has limited channel throughput and can't receive uncompressed LPCM from pc games.

So will this be powerful enough

I also would like to know of this has the speaker distance adjustment like the Onkyo's Audyssey

        • +2

If that's the case you'll love this Pioneer Amp. And Yes, I believe it does have the feature you want, Second paragraph under Powerful Sound Control. (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pio…).

        • @RightplaceRontime:

          Thanks man.
But on the pioneer website it says 523-K? Is the K version different to this you think?

Also, sorry I don't know about Speaker power stuff.
You think this will be powerful enough for the aldi system I own here?
          http://artim.co/home-theatre-system/

          Thank you

        • My onkyo has a hdmi design fault that has screwed many many customers over. Failure rate very high and it's common to a lot of models.

Beware onkyo. $1500 down the shi-ter.

      • +1

nice gadget, thanks for the link - this will massively outperform the item in this deal and won't leave you with useless unsellable DVD and speaker junk sitting in your garage

  • +1

We're still using a similar Pioneer 5.1 system which we bought ~8yrs ago. Subwoofer went after ~5yrs and we paid to get it fixed and is starting to go on it's way out (goes distorted sometimes but is usually okay after restarting it) again just recently. Everything else has worked flawlessly.

  • Wondering if I can purchase this set-up, and then connect my existing floor speakers and surround sound speakers to it? Would like to replace my broken amp but don't know if this is powerful enough?

    Thanks for any suggestions!

    • cowiie - You may want to consider this option. (http://www.selby.com.au/electronics/receivers-and-amplifiers…).
By the way, you should be able to connect your speakers to this (OP's Pioneer post)or just about any Amp/receiver, but as you have implied, will it be powerful enough. Look at your current Amp specs. Output per channel and compare those figures to these offerings (Pioneer and Onkyo).

    • +1

Yes you can, but at least check the Ohms rating of the speakers against the amp. The specs of the amp say "Impedance at Output Level: 6Ω", so make sure your speakers are 6Ω too. It'll probably be labelled on the speaker somewhere, or just google the specs of your speaker.

I have the older version of this amp (VSX-521) and drive big floor standing front speakers with it.

      • The amp will work fine with 6 or 8 ohm speakers, by giving the power rating into 6 ohms it just allows the manufacturer to market a higher power rating than if they used the 8 ohm figures, though I would not use these lower level amps for 4 ohm speakers.

From the VSX-523 manual it's rated at 80 watts into 8 ohms full range signal.

Continuous average power output of 80 watts* per
channel, min., at 8 ohms, from 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz with no
more than 0.08 %** total harmonic distortion.
        Front (stereo) … … … … … …80 W + 80 W

        Also in the manual

        Guaranteed speaker impedance … … . 6ohm to 16ohm

similar Pioneer 522(receiver only) around 1 year ago sold for $184
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86806

    521 even less @ $99 (2 years ago)
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81301

the pioneer htp-072 package (lower spec) sold for $199

not so sure it's a bargain for this deal @ about $290(including delivery)
but, so far it's cheapest on the market!

    • I bought the HTP-072 for $199. It comes with a VSX-324 receiver. Kinda sucky but does the job well for the price. Doesn't have a UI menu either.

If anyone buys this deal (which is pretty good deal imo), as always first thing to do is upgrade to an active subwoofer and get rid of the bundled passive subwoofer. The difference is night and day.

      • I too bought the htp-072 for $199
wanted to go for the 521/522 speakers bundle(something like $249? Christmas/Boxing day deal?)

anyway, this deal is about $290, so $100 difference out from $199 is kinda big!
not sure if active sub & UI menu + MACCA justify 50%($100 more) for me?
        I'd say no! :-P

still, this is a good deal, usually these 523 bundle goes for $349~$399 + shipping

      • Looks like the sub in this bundle is active?

        • yes, 5 series uses active sub, htp072(3 series) uses passive sub

    • +1

I purchased the 521 for $99 qnd its till going strong has been a great amp for the price

  • +1

May have been $658 many years ago, but these packs sell @ $349 + shipping on ebay

  • +1

Can anyone comment on the performance and quality of the speakers? I can't find much/any info/reviews online or the manufacturer website other than some hints that they are relatively junk, as their picture appearance suggests IMHO.

    • +7

I purchased this same pack. The receiver is great, but the speakers are not good. Satellite speakers are poor, washed out sound with little trebble or bass quality. The subwoofer is even worse, it has a known issue where it has auto-standby that is quite aggressive, and you hear a clicking as the power kicks back in. Doesn't seem to be an issue with music as there is always enough bass keeping it turned on, but with movies it often would auto standby and distinctively 'click' on again during any loud scene with bass.
Purchased a 5.1 set of Accusound speakers off ebay for around $600 and the difference in the sound quality is amazing with this same receiver.
Anyway, very happy with the 523, but yeah, if you are getting this see how you go with the speakers, I'm sure you won't find it hard to get some reasonable money for reselling them if you decide to upgrade.

      • That's the info I wanted to hear.

i got this from oo the last time they had the deal, does the job nothing too fancy, im happy with it. sub was better than expected but dont expect too much punch from it. remember its only entry level stuff.

  • +2

Don't forget cash rewards for 3.6% cash back

  • Thanks OP.

  • Im trying my best to resist this deal!!!

  • +5

I was going to pull the trigger on this deal but decided not to.

From what I've read online(and based on OzB comments), to make your decision easier, here is the short version:
    * ticks most of the boxes (for me) - 4k, 3D, HDMI passthrough, iPhone/ipod connectivity
    * good amp (better than the amp in the JB HTP-072 $199 package)
    * average speakers
    * dvd is "useful" bonus
    * subwoofer has "auto standby" issue
    * need to use component connection for OSD for amp setup

If this basic home theatre package was around $200 mark, maybe I'd buy it. Looking through the OzB archives it seems that this is the second price drop from oo.com.au.

Depending on your budget/needs, I'd wait for another price drop or a better home theatre bundle (me, I'm waiting on a Yamaha home theatre bundle) :/

    • +2

Probably a good thing that you didn't if you're after 4K/UHD capability.

I'm in the process of looking for a new home theatre system to replace my very satisfactory Sony 5.1, mainly because I bought two new bookshelf speakers to enhance stereo only to find the receiver won't drive them "adequately" (another story of failure to research in depth before buying - doh)! As a result of my latest research on 4K I'll summarise by saying the latest indications are that the content providers have insisted on HDCP2.2 protection as the standard for 4K compliance and the vast majority of current "4k ready" receivers and earlier TVs do not actually have this capability despite early advertising as being 4K ready (primarily I gather because it seemed a lower standard via HDMI2.0 was expected to be implemented). Note also that as this standard is hardware incorporated it cannot be fixed by firmware upgrades.

There is plenty of reading material for anyone wanting to "4K future proof" their receivers/home theatre systems but please be aware that there are currently VERY FEW RECEIVERS WITH HDCP2.2 CAPABILITY on the market and that it appears that "4K ready" is now not what it seemed a few months ago. New 4K ready receivers are expected to hit markets in the next 6 months or so. Newer TVs are apparently less of a concern (than receivers) and may actually be compliant but check for HDCP2.2 if 4K is of interest! I'm waiting for the new generation before I buy, although in electronic media you can never really future proof anything as we know.

See the comments after this review: http://www.soundandvision.com/content/sony-str-dn1050-av-rec… (the receiver I was looking at - a WhatHiFI award winner)
Here's a basic discussion of the HDCP2.2 issue (there are many more in-depth discussions if you search): http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/hdcp-2-2-what-you-need-to-know/

I'll repost this in the forums so it doesn't get lost in this expired deal. Hopefully what I've learned will help others.

  • Ended up pulling the trigger and ordering. Although the DVD player is completely useless (haven't had physical media in years), for $265 delivered (after $10 off + 40% off syd metro delivery + 3.6% cashrewards), its not bad, considering:

    1. Should be able to get at least $5 or $10 for the dvd player on ebay.
    2. When I upgrade the speakers, should be able to get another $30 or $40 for the set. They're prob alright as cheap surrounds in a 7.1 setup.

Brings the price of the amp itself down to about $215-ish which is around the best price its been on special.

  • +2

why has the price dropped so much? this is such a huge drop. don't these companies want profits anymore? LOL

    Sold Out already.. zzzzz…

    • +2

They had only 3 to sell. LOL ;)

how much do you the set of speakers will fetch if I put it on ebay?

Graysonline have some as well + $40 delivery.

    • Looks like the speakers sold by oo.com.au are drop-shipped from Grays Online anyway.

Just checked my order tracking and it has the item picked up from "Grays Online DC".

  • -2

Just do pick up, it's free, that's what most of us did with 00.com.au

  • Anyone know if this has dynamic range control?
In other words it normalises sound levels of quiet dialogue and loud explosions.
Something that really pisses me off while watching action movies

    • I know the 521 doesn't which is the only thing that bugs the hell out of me as well

Got mine today, initial view is that it sounds great!

Got the latest transformers lined up with 5.1 sound to give it a full go tomorrow night!

Currently setup with my $35 Chromecast, $2.50 DSE HDMI cables and projector from tech rentals ozbargain posting.

  • Received mine yesterday along with some other cables for home entertainment goodness.

    On-sold DVD player for $35.

    • On-sold DVD player for $35.

      Well played, sir! :)

    • Well played indeed, mine is still sealed in its box! Probably won't ever see the light of day.

  • Can anyone please confirm whether it does indeed have dynamic range control?

It appears to be back in stock for $299.95 and I might be able to combine it with an aparently targeted site-wide free shipping offer with min $70 spend valid for 11 days.
