  • I don't know that Skype allows you to show your mobile number on outgoing calls till now.

    Thanks easternculture.

Although my experience with the Caller ID varies..

Sometimes it shows, most times it doesn't.

      • Seems to depend on the carrier. In my experience, if the receiver is Vodafone then it does not show, however Optus does show. I've made international calls through skype and it does show caller ID.

As victorheaven pointed out, it's inconsistent.

Great! We just paid $149.50 to renew our subscription, with 3 included DID numbers… & we get charged when we dial Aussie mobiles!!! (OR did the change to include mobiles maybe come very recently…?

OP, I like how you think.

Big callers may need to pay for more data (e.g., one of Virgin's 6GB or 12 GB plans…?

To our costly mobile phone carriers: WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET UNLIMITED MOBILE DATA?!?

PS Maybe there's an opportunity here to make a new Aussie business, e.g., selling nicely packages of cheap 12-month "Skype + mobile data" packages…?

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET UNLIMITED MOBILE DATA?!?

When the networks aren't saturated… Which could take a while.

I've got users in the city who have full 4g reception but a trickle of data, especially at lunch time - too much YouTube!!

  • Great combo!

  • is the 10 gb amaysim for every month? or is it 10 GB over a span of 365 days?

    • +1

      365 days

      • +1

Thanks EC, but isn't that too less?

        • It is less than 1GB/month. Might be enough if you just use it for using skype. However, given that other apps on your phone will download upgrades etc, you may finish that in 7/8 months (depending on your use). I assume you have wifi at home. You can keep the option "updates only over wifi" turned on to save data.

  • Thanks champ. Ive been using my iPad mini for a while for Skype, Viber etc and it works well.

  • Does the Amaysim Data only plan come with a number you can use for incoming calls?

Are you suggesting that all outgoing calls from the mobile use data / skype?

Price for Skype number is showing up as $80 (reduced to $40 because I'm already on a subscription with Office365) - with skype credit @ 50% off, this would make the number $20 - correct? Does it work the same way if you have subscribed to the premium plan? How did you get $30?

Lastly - are there any adapters which allow you to connect a standard set of DECT phones somehow to your skype account to handle the incoming / outgoing calls?

Does the Amaysim Data only plan come with a number you can use for incoming calls?

      Yes

Are you suggesting that all outgoing calls from the mobile use data / skype?

As long as you use the skype app to make the calls, then yes

Price for Skype number is showing up as $80 (reduced to $40 because I'm already on a subscription with Office365) - with skype credit @ 50% off, this would make the number $20 - correct?

Skype credit is treated as normal cash, so i would say yes

Does it work the same way if you have subscribed to the premium plan? How did you get $30?

Logged in my account, went to buy Skype number and when i chose my aussie number, it showed up as $60. So with the 50% off skype cards, you get it as $30

Lastly - are there any adapters which allow you to connect a standard set of DECT phones somehow to your skype account to handle the incoming / outgoing calls?

Yes. Philips make them. Link here http://www.philips.com.au/c/skype-phones/300793/cat?tab=more

      • Thanks

"Logged in my account, went to buy Skype number and when i chose my aussie number, it showed up as $60. So with the 50% off skype cards, you get it as $30"

        • I would have expected that with the premium subscription (better than the 60 mins / month Office 365 inclusion), you would be offered it at 50% off ($40) as well (making the actual cost only $20).

        "Yes. Philips make them."

my 4mths experience with skype premium had been at times quite frustrating. I travel quite a lot and use skype to call mobile# in .au and usa. Two common occurrence would be. 1. Many atimes skype refuses to connect my phone call to a mobile (and yet calling landlines was fine). 2. Sometimes you get a false impression the call is ringing then it would just terminate (other end didnt ring at all). 3. A few times thats happened, I call, the other person picks up, then the call is terminated.

I am guessing some skype voip gateways are to blame. I don't have a skype DID# (yet) so can't verify calls to skype numbers. Many of my calls are made via WIFI & 4G connections.

My experience with Skype for over two years is that it is good, when it works, but it only works 80% of the time, and it does not work well on the 3G network. Often you just can't login to Skype, or there are network connection problems.

Perhaps the carriers are deliberately interfering with Skype, or perhaps it is not well suited to one or two bar signal mobile data.

Bottom line is that I could not use it to replace my mobile voice plan.

      • 3G in australia is not reliable enough to be used by voip.

  • +1

I dont think 10GB is enough for 1 year.

    • for people who dont make frequent phone calls like grandma, should be enough

  • skype subscription 116. If i purchased a gift card (100), will it still works?

    • Yes, Better off buying 5 X $25 gift cards for $62.50 after 50% discount

why ppl still using skype ? and willing to pay for it …. alot of alternative… facetime, facetime, and facetime.

    • +5

Not everyone is an apple fanboy

    • in real world, not everyone is using Apple's product and facetime would not allow group calling, calling to overseas numbers mobile/landline when required.

Some pay for its convinience to be installed on android, windows,IOS,Blackberry operating systems ( Mobiles, Tablets, PC/LAPTOPS) and need varies as well.

    • Yeah Facetime is AWESOME if you only want to talk with 11.7% of the smartphone population.

Also be aware that Skype premium does NOT cover calls to certain "premium numbers" (1300/1800).

It will be debited from your main balance instead.

Got stung by this couple of months back.

    • how come i can make free calls to 1800 numbers in oz when i have no credit?

      • I also call US 1800 numbers without credit

  • +1

How do you get the Skype number for $60? ($30 after the 50% off)
I tried a few areas (SYD,MEL,BNE) and it always shows up as $80 for 12 months subscription.
Do you have to subscribe to the premium first?

  • Great deal, I had been thinking about getting this, thanks OP!

  • I was at Officeworks this morning so asked if they would price match the Coles offer. They said yes but we can only match (not beat by 5%) as the 'system is not allowing us to do so". They even called someone to check. I said fine, price match will be ok. After paying via paywave , the lady said I am sorry the cards are not activating for some reason (said failed activation on the reciept) so unfortunately we have to refund your amount!

As after 10 mins the refund transaction still wasn't processing thru the system, she gave me the refund in cash!

Who knows what's going on the 'system'…

    • +1

if you paid with an ING debit card, at least you keep the cash back

    • I had a similar experience today. Office works had a 40% sale on the cards. The operator manually put through each $25 voucher and adjust for the additional 10% discount and the 5% price beatd for 11.87. At the end, the transaction failed and i was refunded at the 40% off price, effectively paying me $13 approx for $100 credit.

I couldn't be bothered waiting for them to fix the issue so went to coles and picked $220 vouchers for $110.

      Thanks

    • Could you send me a code too please

    • Please add me if possible… thanks

    • Curious - where are you getting these codes from ?

  • I think you're able to receive text and calls even if you're on a data only plan (or a "broadband SIM"). I did this a few years ago with a Vodafone broadband SIM (overseas at least), so you could potentially negate the $30 to purchase a Skype number. This would also save you from changing numbers if you port out.

  • "current 30% off Skype premium"

    How does one activate this?

  • has anyone had any luck locating the $100 skype cards in melb.?
    not having much luck

          Redeems the codes /cards you have bought,you will see skype credit ( if 4 x25$ = 100$)
then click on buy yearly subscription and pay it via skype credit
          hope this helps

        • your absolutely the best ….

  • can i then purchase the yearly premium ?
do i just place all the barcodes

  • Has anyone used Skype to call Indonesian land lines lately? Was the quality crap? Don't want to buy a gift card then find out I'm wasting my time with poor quality calls.

    • I have. Pretty decent quality. Shame mobile isn't included.

  • when does the 30% off skype end?

  • +1

I have been using Skype for a few months now for international calls (same subscription as here), and have found the quality to be generally good.
Surprised no one here mentioned "Skype To Go". For those unaware, Skype will let you save an international number as a local number ("to go" number). If you have unlimited local calling plans, this is very convenient.
The one issue I have with the Skype app is that my Android phone does not recognise a Skype call as a phone call and will interrupt it if I get an incoming cellular call. So I prefer to use Skype to Go.
Another option is to save the international number as "[your local Skype to go number],2,[international number]" and just dial as a local call. Alternately, use the first option I mentioned - register your regularly dialled international numbers in your Skype account and Skype will give you a local equivalent, which dials the international number through their VoIP network.

  • Hm but then i'd have pretty much no data left for casual browsing etc on my mobile.. Are there any other larger yearly data plans out there?

  • can i use my skype premium account to call home from overseas during a holiday and also continue to use this credit to make calls when i am back in australia? will there be any issues with this?

i read on another ozb thread that some people got banned for making multiple calls from multiple locations at the same time.

    • Done it before when on holidays in Taiwan and NZ. Haven't had any issues. Called using my iPad and iPhone.

  • -1

    a code for me please.

  • I'm considering this, but there seems to be a couple of drawbacks.

    1. In areas of poor reception you will not be able to make calls as data seems to be the first to go.
    2. There is no SMS/MMS included.
    3. No 000 emergency calls.

Don't think you can get around the first issue, but is there a cheap option for the second?

Would be good as a home phone replacement or someone who does not need SMS and can live without 000 though.

    • +1

      No 000 emergency calls.

You can use your mobile number to call 000 for free . Even a mobile with no SIM card is capable of calling 000

      • Cool didn't know that.

        • The better one to remember is 112 - works on any phone in almost any country. Mobile spec defines that it must be allowed no matter what network it's on and redirects to the appropriate emergency number of that location.

  • I do Skype 300 minutes a month at $5.98, and have Amaysim 10 GB per year.

Additional costs are 12cents pm for Voice mail, and additional costs for when you dial 1800 or 1300 numbers from Skype. I don't call international.

  • Hi Purewinter, would also like a code if you have one available as well. Thanks!

  • Hi Purewriter, Can you please send a 12 months skype premium code?
If you have one that'll be great if not that's ok too.
In any case, have a great weekend

  • +2

Has anyone actually got a free code that works from purewriter

  • ref "* A fair usage policy applies to calling phones. Excludes special, premium and non-geographic numbers. " does it include 13 and 1300 numbers? if you log in the skype app on your mobile then on at your laptop will they suspend your account? can you share the log in Australia and overseas at the same time? what if you travel can you use it overseas or will they suspend your account?

  • what is a good and relatively cheap desk phone that i can use with this premium subscription? i want to buy a phone that does not require a pc, and used my premium skype to make unlimited domestic and overseas calls. thanks

  • +1

Has the offer changed? Still showing 33% off but the link guides me to an annual premium rate of $99.99, however when reviewing whats included it seems that Australia is landlines only. Gives you the option of adding mobiles for an additional $100 whuch makes it $209 all up. Am i doing something wrong?

    • hmmm That does seem stuffed up, where.the.hell is mobiles Oztralia ?? .. constantly fiddling around the junk in there & to think I was about to buy more credit. This even moves up to a scam I'm never looking back from 'hangouts..:-| Lousy, lousy tel-cos.

      • can someone confirm if I can buy the premium subscription now? and that it includes all mobile and landline as per the original deal thread?

        • Id did originally include mobile in Australia when i posted the deal. It seems that they have caught up on us subscribing to the premium plan (+ this ozbargain post) and they removed it. Probably initially they werent expecting a high influx of premium subsriptions from AU.

Can anyone that bought the deal and subscribe the say i posted the deal if Mobiles are included or have they removed it from all new and existing subscriptions

        • What would be really welcome, & if MS have a modicum of manners .. Announce Aus-mobiles will be graced for 1 month. After which those'll move up premium/ultimate ~whatever.
All this was was zero notice/poor form..on Sunday. They out this 50%

        • @daver:

So does that mean whoever subscribed on the basis of unlimited mobile calls to AU wont get the deal for 12 months ???

        • Sorry, was talking payg- casual/prospective clients who just saw price leap A$160 A$319.99 (100%). Existing 12M-should be unaffected.

Keeping in mind; Microsoft puts to market a 1/2-off promos only to x2 internal price +as if to emulate that high-low strategy of AUS carriers.

    • Yeah from this link, it appears Australia is landline only. https://secure.skype.com/catalog/buy/premium/ui?zone=false

      • anyone have a screenshot of the previous one? i bought the vouchers but havent redeemed yet. i'm not very happy as i just bought the vouchers :(

        • I bought and redeemed $100 worth of voucher only to find I can't use them to buy premium account as my account was initially registered in China. They have a whole different ripping-off billing system.

Well, at least I can still use it as pay as you go…
