So does that mean DX aren't banned anymore after the fiasco 2 years ago? (apologies, I am a regular but can't seem to remember if there have been dx posts since then)

    • +1

I can't even remember, what was the fiasco 2 years ago?

      • +3

Was it something to do with this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/103271

        • +3

yeah it was pretty bad, they had a massive 50% off then everyone's (or most) orders got cancelled…

        • +2

I got a quad core tablet for $65, so I wasn't unhappy with that deal.

        • @mskeggs: Same, I got heaps of stuff on the cheap in that sale, so no complaints from me either.

        • @StewBalls: none of mine got cancelled.

        • +1

Mine got cancelled… was disappoint. DX credited my account with $30 so got something for nothing in the end.

        • @mskeggs:

          Me too

        • For the record I had 90% of a 1200 order cancelled, bust as I was buying to much the free credit I got was over 150 bucks, but it was still a pain as I would have rather ad my stuff

    • +7

Only Rep-posting has been banned for DX due to their reps posting bad deals. We do not ban the store due to logistic / fulfilment issues affecting part of the community, especially when many others are still benefiting from their offers.

  • +4

On first reading I read DODGEE cellphones instead of DOOGEE cellphones :)

    • +1

      Same.

  • I recently sold my quad core tablet for the same price I paid 2 years ago, so I'm not complaining either :)

  • +1

hahah.. I was the OP that deal and I missed out.. :P

But still bought the THL W8 later on with the coupon at the reduced rate. It was nowhere near as good as what it was originally but still considered a good price at the time.

    Oh well

  • Can anyone recommend a quad core tv hdmi stick from dx which would take advantage of the coupon? I haven't really been keeping up since the dual core ones :(

    • +5

unless you really need a stick, I'd recommend an Amlogic S802 based player (about $100-120).

steer clear of the RK3188 sticks, they're at least 2 years old and struggle with 1080p.

I'm keeping an eye on the RK3288 - but it's still in alpha testing so is an unknown quantity, but should be much more powerful once again as a media player and gaming platform (think N64 emulation).

EDIT: sheesh!!! after checking out the prices on AUD.DX - I'd recommend hitting ebay or alibaba - you'll get the same media players for a good $40 cheaper! Not worth the $8 AUD discount imho.

EDIT2: DX does have the RK3288 media players (but they're still early in their software life cycle, so expect bugs etc.) for about $120 for the 16GB player (which also has wireless b/g/n/ac), but if you look around you can find them delivered for $10-20 cheaper (but if you sign up for the newsletter you get a $5 coupon - still waiting for it, to see if I can use it with the $8 discount - in which case I might buy the UBox RK3288 media player).

      • +1

I use a RK3188 (tronsmart t428) once I put the latest hacked 4.4 ROM on and plex, it works a treat… that said, its transcoding and i'm using a wired connection.
don't think i'll buy another rockchip device. great post though.

        • Cool, thanks for the info guys, I'll check out the recommendations!

  • Having "E SCAM" as the default search isn't off-putting at all.

  • +6

    minimum order limit is $40

This is not really a deal. In order to get $8 we need to spent $40 to buy the crap items from DX. It's just not worth worth my time. I have not forgotten the previous switch and bait deal by DX. If the $8 was without minimum spend, I am all in. Unfortunately it is no deal, I have to neg it.
P.s: good luck with lucky draw.

    • +7

I agree with you, spend $40 on junk that is cheaper on ebay most of the time.

  • Just to note:

$5 Coupon for any order of $40 or more

    http://aud.dx.com/newsletter/?utm_source=aud&utm_medium=albu…

    • not useful at the moment.. you can only apply one coupon to an order. So the AUD $8 coupon is better to use.

  • +2

Never again with DX after the last deal.

  • Pretty good deal and they shipped fast via Toll express!

    • +4

You're shitting me right? Dealextreme ships fast?

      • +2

Some of the Aus warehoused stuff reportedly can be shipped fast, although this has not been my experience, so YMMV…

        • +1

They don't have an Australian warehouse. "AU direct" is a shipping offer, it still ships from Hong Kong or China.

And while the shipping may be faster, it often takes DX a week or so to get around to shipping.

I suspect they don't stock most of the stuff they sell, they just put in a weekly order to their suppliers when you order something. When they receive it, then they'll ship it to you.

Last order I got from DX was during the last special, and it took 14 (calendar) days, despite being promised 5-7 business days.

        • +1

@Russ: Hmmm, IIRC they used to brag about having a local warehouse (hence the limited range of products)…but your explanation certainly makes sense, and would explain the mediocre delivery times for my last "AU Direct" experience…

        • +1

          @StewBalls:

I just found proof in their FAQ page:
          http://cs.dx.com/FAQ/Detail/120

They say "AU Direct is a customized site which made for DX AU customers and we aimed to offering better service as below:

Ø Free Express Delivery by courier, ships will arrive in 5-7 business days

Ø Free On TimeTracking from China to Australia"

      • Yes mate, the fastest time I received my order was 3 - 4 days depends on stock availability. Some items they have to order from their suppliers might take a bit longer, but no longer than two weeks unless Australian Customs put on hold for inspection.

They're a lot better than DX.com which normally take 4-12 weeks to arrive here.

  • So, anyone who's + voting this deal got any specific items in mind that make it worthwhile? Something on or near $40 makes the $8 coupon roughly 20% off.

    • +1

You can buy 16 of these and do a race then send the 2 fastest ones back so they can breed more of the strongest.

    • +3

Why not stock up on some terrible secret santa gifts?

      <shameless plug>
See ShitGifts, where I post links to ridiculous stuff that I find on DX, along with appropriately high-brow descriptions.

Slightly NSFW, in case the domain didn't give it away.
      </shameless plug>

      • +1

what, you mean like pleasure eggs and stuff like that for secret santa? :)

nastiest secret santa gift I've seen was a humungous jar of vegemite to someone who was the office brown noser.

        • +2

I've gleefully read the reviews of the imitation pleasure eggs on DX, but pressing the buy button is a whole new level of shame which I'm not yet willing to commit to. The vague possibility of lead/melamine contaminants would be enough to scare off even the most turgid member.

Here's a rule that has served me well over the years:
If you're planning on sticking it in your body or a powerpoint, don't buy it from DX

  • +6

While I was not aware of the last fiasco I'd like to commend DX for rewarding its existing customer base more than new customers. Granted DX isn't as cheap as it used to be for a lot of items (compared to ebay) I'm sure some people can make use of the coupons and come out ahead.

  • +2

    minimum order $40 no thanks

  • +1

    Boycott DX

    here is my 5 cents

Bought a multi tool for ($10) few years back and was OK, it was a bit rough but usable.

Decided to re purchase the same multitool recently, not only was it different, but it was unusable. The metal parts were so crudely finished that you needed your own workshop finish of the product so that it was usable.
Complained to DX and after some time they decided to send me a replacement multitool.
This one wasn't crudely finished, cause producer felt that it would take too much time for such luxuries. So they spray painted few rusty metal parts and bolted them together and hoped that someone would buy it based on the reviews (biased).
DX shipped each multitool via sweden and only took 30days per trip.

  • +1

There have been so many bad deals here which are not honoured and result in a lot of hassle that I find myself less inclined to bother. I have had a couple of really good bargains but when I look at the amount of time and effort I spend filtering through the deals, I don't think I've broken even. (Then again I wouldn't have been paid for that time). When I do spot what looks like a good deal I try to get it in store. I wish there were stricter rules about banning stores altogether for renegging on their offers en mass!

  • +2

dx is pretty well over now, for me at least.
    Prices have risen
    quality has dropped
    shipping is still slow

    but the real killer

they blatantly post fake ratings and reviews (notable by the identical wording in 2 reviews by different 'users'), and vet negative reviews.

Not to be trusted. Just go ebay, chepaer and quicker. I sometimes use dx as a catlog/price comparison. I used to buy something from them every week or so. Maybe 2 buys this year total, and none recent.

  • code doesn't seem to be working for an existing user, spent $50?

    • Deal is not starting until tomorrow (9 Oct)

  • +1

DX used to be my go to web shop, but never again. (Bought items every month since 2007 then stopped for the last 2 years)

Bought from the Aus DX store and the item was delayed by 2 months. Was told please wait over and over again. Item arrived faulty and they wouldn't refund or resend. Took another month of negotiations and ended up giving up on them.

There's no way I'll give a brass razoo to DX. Higher than ebay prices and zero customer service. Worst online trader by far.
