OP, your webpage has a big pop-up saying "If you are buying for personal use, please visit our approved resellers page". I clicked through, and the resellers aren't selling at the price you quoted, although I didn't check all of them.

It gives the appearance that Element14 does not want OzBargainers to purchase from them.

Also, you should pick a better picture. Showing a full-size SD card beside a device that only accepts micro-SD cards is rather confusing. Perhaps show a micro SD, an adapter, and the Raspberry Pi?

    • Um, so are personal purchases ok through here or not?

Seems strange - would have thought most OzBargainers would be doing personal shopping here.

      What say you, OP?

That's weird. They used to have a special Raspberry Pie splash page that was a little more consumer friendly. It was certainly there when I last bought one back in July.

From my research back then Element14 is the cheapest/best place to get the boards from in Australia. Their free shipping threshold is low ($40 or $50 - can't remember). Shipping is normally next day, even to WA. And they're a reputable large company, not some fly by nighter from eBay.

Their old page was also nice an easy to use - its a shame it seems to have disappeared.

          Hi there,

          Thanks for the kind words!

We still have our consumer friendly Raspberry Pi page that has been revamped for the Model B+ here.

This is now called our Raspberry Pi Hub page and houses all Raspberry-Pi boards, related accessories, add-ons and bundles that we have available.

          Thanks for stopping by!

        Hi guys,

You can certainly purchase through our website should you not wish to purchase through our resellers. Simply close the pop up that appears and you'll end up on the product page.

From there you can enter the quantity you'd like the purchase. Once you're ready to go, click the orange 'Buy' button and this will populate your shopping cart.

        Have a good day!

    Hi rep,

Any deals on the IR camera for the Pi?

    • Hi there soupiejr,

The only current deal that we have running is a special Connect Magazine combo deal that includes:
      1 x Raspberry Pi A Model Board + 1 x Camera Board for $60.50

You can buy it here: http://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-cam/kit-ra…

Please note that the Raspberry Pi A Model is the very first model of the Raspberry Pi and is a basic version of the current Model B+. It is strongly recommended that you view the item's complete details here prior to making any purchases.

      Hope this helps!

i'm having trouble finding a "board only" in Australia for less than what's offered here…Just wish I actually wanted one. I've got 3 model B in the cupboard doing nothing atm

  • Does the Board only ($41.80) include free shipping? If not, what is the shipping cost?

    • +1

      Hi netslicer,

Any orders over $45 (ex. GST) and are up to 20kg qualify for free shipping.

Any orders under $45 (ex. GST) and are up to 20kg, the shipping cost is $14.25.

      Hope this helps!

  • Tronixlabs.com have the b+ pi for $40 plus postage. Starts at about $7 from memory and they are based in Melb.

I paid $38ex from RS with free delivery.

And yes, I'll quote ex GST because it's not a retailer…. Move on already.

i ordered a beaglebone black some 5 months ago, around 2 months before the price hike (went from ~$50 to $65) which was not delivered and about a month back finally received the email telling me that my original order has been cancelled and id have to not only pay the extra $15 but go back to the back of the line and wait another month plus again….

for those that dont know, there was a backlog of ordered for BBB's world wide and you had to buy one but wait in the queue around a month or 2 to get back to the top of the list before finally having one sent out to you.

for the massive premium you pay for farnell/elements14 stuff you would expect at least a little customer service. the way you have treated this is beyond poor

fwiw, as far as i understand you can not charge for the software (being linux) but only for the media it comes on and your $13 card sells elsewhere for $6?

    • +1

fwiw, as far as i understand you can not charge for the software

A common misunderstanding. Linux is published under the GNU General Public License (AKA "the GPL"), and the creators of the GPL have always encouraged people to profit from GPL-licensed software.

      The relevant phrase is:
"Actually, we encourage people who redistribute free software to charge as much as they wish or can."

      Source: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html

It is explained on that page that "free software" uses the "free" word in the sense of "freedom".

Blame the English language for this confusion. Some other languages have more than one word, removing the ambiguity, e.g. "gratis" (for no cost) vs "libre" (freedom) in French.

      Hi nosdan,

      Thank you for your feedback.

As for the SD card, it comes preloaded with NOOBS software (New Out Of the Box Software) where users can choose which Operating System (OS) they'd like to run on their Raspberry Pi. We are offering this as a product of convenience as some users may not be familiar with writing an OS image onto an SD card, or be able to download the NOOBS zip file from the Raspberry Pi website and extract the files needed onto an SD card.

With the preloaded SD card we have on offer, customers can insert the SD card into their Raspberry Pi, and on initial start up (connecting it to a TV or PC Monitor along with having a working internet connection), can simply choose which OS they'd like to run with a click of a button.

      Hope this helps!

Same happened to me. They just cancelled the order after a long wait without anything.

  • Last time I ordered from element 14 I got $100 worth of stuff all delivered (free) separately in about $70 worth of express post satchels. would much prefer they ship it all at once and reduce prices…

  • Does anyone know the max USB current output on the new RPi B+?
Previous version was something pathetic like 140mA.

    • Not sure, but it's definitely more than the regular B.. I've got a WiFi & bluetooth dongle connected to my B+ without any issues, but they wouldn't work without a hub on my old B. Using the same power supply as well.

Edit: Found some details - http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=84151

600mA across them all, increasing to 1200mA with a toggle!! Damn!

  • wow. is the psu really worth $25? or can i get an ebay psu for this?

    • Any* usb charger which meets the min required output is fine. 1-1.5A+ is likely recommended, especially if you want to plug a hdd or something in. Depending on what you plan to do with your rPi, you might even be able to run it from some tv usb ports.

*any that you trust to not set your house on fire.

Edit: not sure what you are referring to, they're only $13-14? http://au.element14.com/stontronics/t5454dv/psu-raspberry-pi…

      • ooh found my mistake, i was reading off the line price and the qty was 2. my bad.

    • wow.. that is cheap. casing plus board plus 2 heatsinks for under 41USD delivered!

      • +1

Common theory is that heatsinks are useless, even when over clocking. Mine was fine over clocked, topped out at about 40C. With heatsinks it loses a couple C…

        • hmm.. not sure where you got that assumption that heatsinks are commonly deemed as useless. I've always thought heatsinks have a place in most deployments. Especially in small scale applications where you prefer not to have a spinning fan, a heatsink is almost the only solution around the heat issue.

I even remember the days where some netgear routers were so badly design that they have heat dissipation issues, people actually cut a hole in them and mount heatsinks to make them run stable.

        • +1

@slowmo: I'm talking specifically about the RPi though. There's a heap of debate/reading material on it. I read a hell of a lot on it, and the general consensus is that they don't need a heatsink.

Some niche cases might, such as high temp areas, etc, but for everyday usage, don't bother.

        • @ryang: ah noted. thanks.

although board+case for under 41usd delivered is still a better deal than this one imo.
as for heatsinks, i dont think i will be using it, so i probably could get away with ebaying them for a dollar or so. :)

  • Good one Op, Picked up a case and power supply as well 68 bucks.

  • +2

Just a follow up on this purchase, I got burned so just warning others, when checking out ensure that the part numbers are correct and print it out so you have proof, I received the wrong case, even though I selected it through the B+ page, they are adamant that I am in error, no resolution was achieved, A lot of red tape to return anything so be warned, Anyone need a A/B case?.

    • +1

if you see the reps comment to me above im not surprised. rep basically says "yea we know we screw people around, we dont care. deal with it"

its always been one of the worst companies ive known of (in the 20 odd years ive been forced to deal with them)

    • +1

      wow. that sucks.

that would mean the deal listed by douglasb is way better.

I nearly got the same case thinking it's B+ case.
