Still one of the worst prepaid offers…

The big telcos offer free texts yet Telstra makes it seem like getting free texts is so special. People are moving away from texts Telstra… Didn't you get the memo.

Used to be 30 days expiry now it's 28 just like Optus and Vodafone. Thanks for cutting off two days.

That $220 cap credit? Used for texts, calls and data only. Voice mail and message bank draw from the $30.

    800mb isn't bad but it's temporary…

I saw the 30 -> 28 days aswell, but I activated it yesterday 11/09 and expiring on 10/10… It seems it's still one month.

I've been using Telstra Cap Encore/Freedom for awhile and it is pretty good deal for me.

      1. Can use the $30 to spend on Google Play Store.
      2. Can use the $220 to make international calls.
      3. Free CALLS and FREE TEXTS from 6pm to 6am. <- prefer this one (or Free TEXTS + Free Telstra CALLS anytime)
      • "Can use the $30 to spend on Google Play Store."

        WWhhhaaat??!

        Thanks!

    • I just turn voicemail off, or send to text - no cost.

I use this plan only for heavy call months - using a new Starter Pack each time & never recharging. Incoming calls usually going to my LongLife-Simplicity plan for 6 months of cheap calls. For details see telstra pre-paid starter pack guide

Besides I strip the $30 credit off for my benefit using CreditMe2u before Telstra can take any - usually to my "iPad" Plan for cheap data.

Luckily I've still got a few $10 Starter Packs left. So this deal is handy.

So for those who use cheap starter packs ($10/15) this makes the deal better. $220 Cap, $30 to transfer to another account with CreditMe2u (less 25c charges) or Google Play, and 800MB on the phone.

  • Is it valid on cap encore?

    • It's the new rebranded encore

      • So I guess for those who grandfathered encore are not eligible?

Freedom plans have no data pack options im pretty sure. I was looking to get onto telstra prepaid but the general consensus on whirlpool is new freedom and beyond plans are worse than existing encore plans

Im pretty sure not applicable to encore plans, i think they are trying to get existing customers onto the new plans

        • Yeah, you can't add/buy data pack option with Freedom. Apparently Telstra is doing something soon (they said this in August) - and they've been very vague.

This would be a good plan if you could buy data packs with the 'real' credit like you could with the encore plans. Wait and see I suppose.

        • @drmac: That's pretty poor. The data packs being purchased as part of a recharge is what makes Telstra Prepaid a viable option besides network reliability. Without a data pack, most of the plans are very underwhelming.

Its a bit disappointing that mobile plans really haven't progressed much in years. I've stuck to a grandfathered plan from 2011 that nets me 2GB of data for a $50 recharge, and then the $50 can be used to take that up to 5GB after buying a 3GB data pack. I find it a shame I've had nothing come from Telstra either as a prepaid or postpaid plan to really rival that for data allowances. At least I'm not forced to change plan.

I think I'll stay with my cap encore, can't take 2 days off me

    • Can Telstra kick us off Cap Encore and force us on Freedom? That's my only concern.

      • From reading on whirlpool it seems thats what they are trying achieve by offering this

I'm on the recently grandfathered prepaid iPad plan. When I asked that question about it was told just don't let it expire.

        • Oh awesome, because I recharge on the 29th day anyway!
PS: I'm about to recharge my iPad $200 instead of the usual $180 last year >_>

          @wutang01:
I'm keeping the iPad plan going with regular CreditMe2u transfers from surplus credit bought with $10 Starter Packs. Retains the old 0.98c/MB rate.

The only good thing about the new plan is the data is being charged per KB but not per MB as per Encore.

However, without the options to buy data pack is really crap.

    • +2

Data is charged per kb under Encore

      • Then… the new plan is really crap!

check this page - Browse Plus Pack:
        http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/offe…

"If you’re not sure how much data you might need use the Data Usage Calculator to help you estimate your needs. Not compatible with Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom offer."

        • Well for some people there's no choice. Granted the new plans are worse than encore, but if you need Telstra's coverage (Optus is useless in Bundaberg for instance) then it's either that or or $40 boost (and no LTE).
I'm not defending Telstra's outrageous prices (well maybe I kinda am) but sometimes when the choice is no reception or pay through the nose, you have to pay through the nose :(.

        • Agree with Telstra coverage being the best/only reception in a lot of regional and rural areas. I find that there are still lot's of areas that do not even get strong/fast/any 3G reception, let alone any 4G. For those people the Boost $40 unlimited calls/text and 2 GB ( no 4G ) data 30 expiry. I run a Nexus 4 which has DC-HSDPA, 42 Mbps; HSDPA, 21 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps capabilities, but find I usually only get a quarter to half at best of those speeds due to signal strength/reception and/or congestion. I like the idea of not having to monitor and check usage for calls, also having a reasonable amount of data 2GB ( was 3GB till March or April ) and knowing that bar some areas here and there, Telstra's NextG network provides the best reception and internet speeds outside of the big cities.

        • With the advent of snapdragon_210 on the horizon… you can see the potential, to have one's coverage and eat it too, if you'll pardon the pun.

'•DSDS,' I reckon addresses the problem.
          $5 pm 'Long life /850Mhz(3G) +$2-$1/500MBday 1800Mhz(Cat4).
will be totally ubiquitous when it hits elementary[$100] phones.

      • ….. who needs speeds …with 2 min quotas,
+ who crows coverage w' .5 a percentage point over the comp.
knowing bigT lycamobile probably next on the chopping block
+ what an odd occasion to celebrate
data packs being ripped from your palms. O.o

    Thanks OP.
Details added to telstra pre-paid starter pack guide

Guide still to be completed, as Telstra has made a few changes lately. Feel free to update or add tips to help other OzBargainers.

    • Hi Bruce,

Referring to the guide, the iPad plan -

"So if you have a Starter Pack connected now with old 3GB, don't let it expire - use CreditMe2u to keep it active!! Theoretically you could stay on old 3GB iPad Plan as long as you keep transferring with CreditMe2u before access period expires!"

What does this access period refer to? Is it the 14 day expiry of the creditme2u credits? How long will this access period last after the 14 day expiry? I read that it was 6 months, what are your thoughts and experience on this?

      • Well as I wrote that, I should know… "access period" refers to the "access expires in x days" you see on your account.

Beyond that, there is a recharge period of about 6 months, when the account is still there, but dormant. I don't know if that keeps the old iPad plan available, but Telstra's advice was to keep it topped up to avoid that.

Topping up with surplus credit - CreditMe2u, extends your access period by up to a maximum total of 14 days. So if your account shows "access expires in 1 day", your access period will now be 14 days. Topping up when access has 14+ days means no extension.

I'm still learning about CreditMe2u, and so are most Testra staff, with my help. Every one has made mistakes when I asked about it. I have to show them how to find it in "Our Customer Terms" pdf (p46 covers CreditMe2u for iPad Plan).

Telstra "Our Customer Terms" pdf - all the t&c (also has link to recent changes to t&c regarding changes to plans)

Updated definition of Access Period in guide. Rewrites will happen as I learn, or others with greater experience contribute.

        • I've actually had a few creditme2u transfers to my iPad SIM after the existing 14 day credits expired and it still gave me 0.98cents per MB.

          Background -

I currently use the $10 prepaids (I have quite a few of them) in my 4G hotspot and transfer the $30 credit to my main phone (which is on the Simplicity plan). When the 30 days are up I just activate another prepaid, "creditme2u" $30 to my main phone, use the 400mb on hotspot and cycle continues.

I hardly make calls or SMSes so accessing the net from my main phone via hotspot is working well. This 800MB double data works great for me.

I used the iPad SIM with my 4G hotspot as a backup to the above routine, but after learning that the plan is now grandfathered I've been trying to "creditme2u" $1 every 14 days just to keep the plan active. And the times I've missed the 14 day deadline I realised I still get 0.98cents per MB upon a "creditme2u".

Would be great if the plan would remain active up to 6 months after each "creditme2u" expiry date so I won't have to transfer $1 every 14 days, but I guess I better not risk it!

        • @tatasauce:
          Oh wise & frugal one…
That's basically what I do, but have always done a CreditMe2u before access expires.

BUT something went very wrong after last CreditMe2u. I transferred $10 credit (from $30 included in $10 Starter Pack), all looked ok & showed I had 1GB from that transfer at 0.98c/MB.

Also bought a 4G WiFi modem (my deal) & used it in that for 1 day. There are higher rates for people found to be using the iPad SIM in another device…

After 200MB, $10 had been used!

I called Telstra - everyone told me that's the correct data rate (5c/MB) for a $10 RECHARGE. Telstra's terms state CreditMe2u is not a recharge & is applied at existing data rate. No one beloved me. It has dragged on for weeks with the case manager wanting me to help her find Telstra's Customer Terms for her!

So when things go ok, it's fine. But it's a strange & lonely land out there when Telstra denies what is in its own Customer Terms!!

        • @brucefromaustralia:

maybe they find out the loop hole and change their policy…

        • @uccoffee:
No, it's still working for others. I think they may have detected use in the 4G modem - that's the major change to previous use. But Telstra has not told me that, just compensated me with more than I lost while investigating.

  • has any one got the old cap encore plan's price guide? cannot find it anywhere in the telstra site anymore.
