  • Output: DC 5V- 2.1A (4 x USB Port)

is that 2.1a on each port (8.4a total) or only 2.1a shared over the 4 ports (so only 500ma per port)?

    • +1

      2.1a total

      • I've had one of these smoke and melt when charging a few tablets at the same time, as it didn't seem able to limit current draw. I was lucky that the damage was only to the desk and power point (and not the devices) and that my house didn't burn down.

In addition to being shockingly dangerous, the power output was really dirty. Even at this price it isn't a bargain.

had one the same as this (not from these guys) lasted about 4-5 months then died.

    • +4

      better it than you !

      • Mine lasted a week!

        • Mine worked for 1 day

Potentially lethal and not approved for use in Australia. Not even a good price for cheap junk.

  • +3

After that woman dying in Sydney, and doing some research, I've chucked all my cheap AC chargers. Non certified, non compliant chargers are an accident waiting to happen.

    and wtf ?

Ideal for long trip, hike, fishing and listening to music

    • with a loooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg extension lead apparently

  • I've got a AU plug version of this and it is 4x 2.1amp.

had it for prob 6 months and it doesn't miss a beat

    • +1

      Its highly unlikely its a 8.4A unit…

in fact its already been said its not

          Username says it all. :-)

  • Same here! Mine died after few mths when charging my phone and ipad at the same time.

  • +2

I've got 1, been going strong for a few years now. Hasn't killed me yet. what, one or two people died from faulty units? Well shit. Better block all overseas electronics, kill all the sharks and get back in your bubble… They're Probably still safer to use than walking down the street.

    • Yeh what's a couple of deaths matter.

      • -1

Every death is terrible, but in the grand scheme of things…. there are more important things worth worrying about that can save far more lives.

        • -1

          Like what?

        • Poverty
          Disease
          Political Unrest
          Bad Driving…

        • +2

@Riczter: None of them charge my phone.

When I last looked they weren't mutually exclusive. It's an interesting concept though - we should ignore electrical safety standards, food standards, building standards, etc because the risk of road death and injury is far higher?

        • -2

          Nope, not ignore.

Weigh up and understand the risks, put those risks in perspective and make decisions based on logic rather than media fearmongering.

        • @Riczter: facepalm

          Stop. Just please stop.

        • +1

@Riczter: Another "I'm all right Jack" acolyte? I see another recent house fire has initially been put down to a phone charger. Not your house so what's to worry about? Okay that's the sarcasm out of the way. Here's the problem with your "logic". What happens to people incapable of making reasonable decisions based on "risk"- the young, the elderly, the blasé, the foolish, the ignorant? The public has reasonable expectations that things they buy are inherently safe - particularly electrical devices, for obvious reasons. How can they "weigh up and understand the risks" when all they know is that this device charges phones?

  • I have one that's still going strong and one that died within weeks, but my biggest problem with these is the bright LED lights in the charger. They are sooo bright. Pretty useless on the bedside table. Might be a great night light for kids, but even there it might be too bright.

    • agree - the blue LED is very annoying and as silly as it sounds, put me off getting another for bedroom. My one lives in the study - its very bright…and i guess consuming power?

      • same here. had one in bedroom, got rid of it after first night. the blue led is really bright, lit up the whole room.

  • +4

hate to say it, I'd probably prefer to buy an AU approved one where the only shock is in the purchase price

  • I agree about the lights and I dismantled one of mine and pried the leds out. Then took it to Ubud and between the loose adapters, and my cheap yellow leads, things were very slow to charge and I missed the lights as they told you when it was connected into the wall properly.
My guess is mine struggles to produce 2 amps as my tablet often tells me it is charging from a weak charger.

    • The other day my tablet reported that a well.
No big deal you would think… well that would be true if I had it plugged in!

  • I bought one a few years ago and has not missed a beat in use every day to charge multiple devices overnight.

I bought a 2nd one not long after the first and it arrived with 2 dead ports. The seller sent another one which has worked perfectly ever since (and one with 2 ports also still works).

I have travelled a lot with these and overall very happy, even with one 1/2 dud.

This detailed rundown of USB chargers gives good detailed info about this unit.
    http://www.righto.com/2012/10/a-dozen-usb-chargers-in-lab-ap…
Not glowing praise for this unit but not the worst either. I have 2 and agree the light sucks. Otherwise they have been OK. The power outputted by them is not particularly clean so I will swap them out for something better in the near future. $700 phone fried by $20 charger…Not wise.

  • These are dangerous…mine melted and started smoking…fortunately I was at home and was able to shut the power off and remove it.
Buy one only if you are hoping to make a large insurance claim on your house.

  • last one of these (catchoftheday same model) died after 4 months of use… the other started smelling… be wary of these crappy adapters…. cheap chinese crud…. you can't even turn the led off… painful when trying to sleep

    • I've stopped using these due to the bright LEDs and faint buzzing sound.

Also multiple reports for these being a potential fire hazard now.
