Lagavulin 16yr Malt Whisky $74.99 @ Vintage Cellars

310

One of the best price I've seen for the Lagavulin 16yr. Currently cheaper than DM and I'm pretty sure DM will price match this.

  • in store?

    • Available in store from vintage cellars and I think they charge about $7 for delivery if purchased online. I've tried price matching their products before at DM and they did it with no fuss. Vintage Cellars also offer free delivery for orders over $150.

  • Hmm.. Not sure if bargain now, or new regular price.. It's been on special everywhere for $75!!

  • Apt name. How do I follow @ScotchLover?

Apparently top 100 Single Malt Scottish Whiskey is appreciating at crazy levels, like 50% p.a. But you gotta buy the barrels and they're many thousands of dollars. And wait 20 years to then auction it off. Heck the bottles alone can start at $400 just for 18yo. And need to buy them by the case.

      *whisky. Whiskey is Irish

        Whiskey/whisky nmemonics:
Here’s a quick way to remember how some of the world’s biggest producers spell their products:

Countries that have E’s in their names (UnitEd StatEs and IrEland) tend to spell it whiskEy (plural whiskeys)
Countries without E’s in their names (Canada, Scotland, and Japan) spell it whisky (plural whiskies)

Great value whiskey. Goes great with a cigar.

  • Has anyone tried Lagavulin bought recently? Is it as good as it was say 5 years ago?

A couple years ago, a former colleague, who's the biggest Scotch collector and connoisseur I know, warned me that the quality of Lagavulin (and a few other notable single malts) had started to deteriorate as they were doing their best to increase the production in order to satisfy the insatiable Chinese market.

Could that be the reason behind the recent price drops?

    • Tried it for the first time a few weeks ago, certainly tasted great then :)

If anyone is unsure as to the quality I would consult the Whisky bible.

I ran a bourbon bar for a couple of years and usually found the descriptions and reviews fairly accurate.

  • I have Jim Murray's little book from quite a few years ago and also found it pretty accurate at the time.

I could spend around $30 for the current edition, or I could ask fellow OzBargainers to share their opinions for free, and put the savings towards another bottle of Scotch - in true OzBargain spirit (no pun intended).

Was $75 at Dans during the click frenzy thing (mentioned it then - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/158493 - and got a neg vote - obviously not everyone likes their Islay malts!) so agree that they would match it….. I actually used my Amex cashback so got it for $55…. And eventually may get some cashback from qwibble to bring it closer to $50…. :-)
