Got my item today, well i guess it's actually not that long but when you were so eager for something, every second is very long, haha…

They should have put a bit more cushion inside the box to stop the item moving or banging side to side as they use a slightly big box

  • I even received a 'Shipping Confirmation' from the last order and then a week later received a 'Refund Confirmation'. There was no reason attached to the refund so basically I just gave them a loan for 2 weeks.

They have proven to be an unreliable supplier.
    Stay well clear !!

I have just got my tracking number via AusPost, Hooray!

    • At a guess, I'd say WD had no Australian stock and shipped the drives in from OS. That could certainly explain the wait time with international shipping and customs clearance.

    • Yeah me too. Must have restocked.

  • Just got a shipping confirmation!

Its being delivered tomorrow.. Its only 5K's from my house right now!!

  • Got my 6TB, still waiting for the 20% discount email.

    • Just got my 8TB

  • 8TB is back in stock but not the 6.

    • Tried to search 8TB on their site, My Book Live Duo 8TB is not showing up. But go to the link provided in this deal, the "Add to cart" button is now clickable.

    • What's wrong with 8TB ? May I know the reason for specific 6TB ? Rare item ?

  • +1

Not sure how this will work, I replied to my shipping confirmation email (on an order I know through phone contact with WD was cancelled) asking that since the order was cancelled could they please refund my payment, I received a reply stating that a refund would be taking place - BUT AS A THANKS have 15% discount coupon….So I've clicked back through the deal and for some unknown reason the site still wants to offer me 20% off (must be a tracking cookie hidden somewhere on my system). So I've ordered again …. see how that goes…..living in hope here, but concerned WD have a very flawed website.

    • Yeah, I'm getting the same 20% off cookie, but no stock of the 8TB Duo…

  • *Outlet products are excluded from the 15% discount code…

    • Tried the code, it does not work.

    • Well you can wait for 20% if you purchased the drive previously…I think it's okay to use with outlet products.

      • Doesn't work on outlet product.
        I've tried.

  • Just got an email from WD regarding the cancelled order of the previous deal, they also send me the code for 15%off….hmmmmm what to get, another 8TB?

    • +1

As above, it does not work.

  • Not sure if I have a faulty unit or if they are just a POS but I have had the blue screen of death 4 times now while loading files onto it.(kernel power event 41 task 63)
This is on a 6 core pc with 8gb of ram so I doubt it is a lacking grunt on the PC issue.

Also when streaming to my tablet there is lag.
It gets about 5 minutes into it and then no sound, I need to go back and watch again to hear what happened..

  • For those trying to use the 15% off. Go to the WD store link in the email. In the search box up the top type My Book Live. The 8TB shows in list. Click it, add to cart and then use your 15% code, it takes $60 off or it does for me.

    • Couldn't find the 8tb. The one that shows in the list is 4tb.

        • For me, first item in that list is $399, and in the specs says 4tb capacity.

        • Though they might claim that it's a fraudulent code, cancel your order and hold your money for a couple weeks if you pay by PayPal. But then again, if that happens, you might get another letter of apology and an additional 15% off code. Rinse and repeat…

        • @salem: Oh yeah, my bad. Didn't even look at the specs. I thought it was the 8TB as the price of the same! Sneaky.

        • Sorry, just saw the $399 and assumed it was the 8TB given the price. Geez.
Cannot edit or remove my previous post because I replied to it.

    • My Book Live Duo 8TB Yes AU$699.99

My Book Live Duo Yes AU$529.99

Yes, the 15% works, but only for normal 4TB My book live duo, not the 8TB version.

      In this case, $330 for 4TB and $360 for 8TB (10% discount).

  • Anyone else got the shits with this thing yet?
Another day of multiple Blue screen of death for me and slow and laggy streaming.

    • Now I believe there is a god. My original order got canceled. Got the money without any delays and decided not to buy it.

Now this. Would've been a waste of $300.

      • In this case, I will get the HDD and sell the NAS case. $320 for 2 x 4 TB hdd is still a good price.

Now I just need to get a 20% discount coupon to buy it at that price.

I have a MyBook World Edition II and it has been running for 4 years. Good for normal file sharing, Web server, DLNA (Not Twonky, I use MediaTomb). Its CPU is about 200Mhz, that is why the transfer speed is only upto fast Ethernet although it has a Gigabit port.

  • Received my 6TB today. Will set it up tonight and see how it runs.

    • Same here. My 6TB arrived today.

  • Received two of 8TB today will set it up in a few days with D-link Switch and will be hooking them up via EATON UPS. Will report back.

  • No more 6TB + 8TB on their website???
Got the cancellation email with a 15%OFF code and thinking to get another one 8TB..
Oh well, i guess i will just save the money for next super deal.

    • The 8TB is still there however the 6 isn't back in stock yet.

  • Anyone else getting horrifically slow speeds network copy speeds? I'm seeing write speeds of 4MB/s across a gigabit network connection.

My estimated backup time for a 4TB drive is ~12 days, FFS.

The review here claimed 41MB/s for windows file copies.

    • +1
      • Look at the number of items, they seems like lots of small files. Maybe that is the reason for slow tx rate.

    • How are you transferring? I got about 15MB/s over WiFi when I backed up photos last night.

      • How are you transferring?

WIN7 PC with gigabit ethernet on motherboard -> 1m Cat6 cable -> Netgear GS608 gigabit switch -> 1m Cat6 cable -> WD My Book Live Duo. Both gigabit switch and WD show 1000mbps connection LEDs.

Using windows 7 file copy - ~4MB/s (average over first 5 minutes)
Using SyncBack - ~4.5MB/s (average over 10+ hours)
Using vendor supplied "WD Smartware" - 250KB/s <- WTF?

Replacing WD MBLD with 7 year old budget Acer NAS, everything else the same - 36MB/s

Source 4TB RAID array benchmarks ~173MB/s

I don't use jumbo frames, so my fastest network transfer I get tops out at ~65MB/s when transferring SSD -> SSD over my wired gigabit.

        • maybe cause this copy is lots of small files, have you tried with one large file?

        • @wisc:

Just got a ~1GB file that was around 4.8MB/s.

    • Yes. Rsync over NFS I was getting fluctuating speeds peaking at about 500mbps, but it kept choking every 5 minutes and needed restarting. Rsync over ssh I'm getting a steady 100mbps for the last 2 days constant. But it's going from a server with gigabit, cat6 cable to gigabit switch, and then another cat 6 cable to the WD. My WD came with only a cat5e cable so I'm using a different one I had that's cat6.

  • Geez, Checked bank transaction and there is a foreign transaction fee.
Isn't it a AU WD outlet store?

    • And they're selling in AUD.

    • I didn't get any transaction fee paying with amex…

  • Got my 8TB

What does eveyone think of them?

    Slow?
    Runs hot?
    Crash?

    • I'm far from impressed. I'm getting pathetically slow speeds from it. So slow that, given the 8TB capacity, render it almost useless.

eg I'm now in the 35th hour of backing up a 4TB RAID array - with an estimated total time of over 7 days!

If I didn't need to upgrade my RAID array from 4TB to 12 TB, replacing the entire array, I'd rip the drives from it immediately and throw the NAS in it's shipping box. Only keeping it in case I need it for warranty replacement of the drives.

Given that you can buy a couple of 4TB drives for ~$345 + delivery currently, I wouldn't recommend buying the WD MBLD unless you pay less than the cost of the drives alone. Hell, I'd want a discount on even the cost of the bare drives to compensate for added aggravation of removing them.

      • What speeds are u getting? Really depends on the number of files your copying. Also is it connected to a 1gbps port?

        • He addressed this here
I haven't done Terrabytes of copying, only a few hundred Gigabytes of photos and movies. I definitely wouldn't say it's in any way fast… but it's acceptable for me and has been working as I expected.

        • @Jonaseymour: I'm getting constant 33.1 mega bytes per sec. I can deal with that for now.

        • @apnamasti:

I'm starting to think mine is defective.

How are you measuring your transfer speed? Over what file size?

        • @Chris McMahon: the files are 700mb to 2gb video files by folder with small files such as images and sub tittle files.

  • For anyone considering buy one of these, here's a update on a few assumptions I made before purchase that you may have also made, that turned out to be wrong.

    1. The hard drives that come with the NAS are use replaceable BUT you can only replace them with WD supplied drive specifically formatted for use with this NAS. You can't just plug any drive into them, even a WD drive. The only way you'd get a another drive is if WD sent you one specifically as a warranty replacement. This is because the drives contain the NAS firmware. Hope you didn't buy the 6TB version thinking you could upgrade it. Or even the 8TB model thinking to could put 2x 8TB drives in it in a few years.

    2. Thinking of removing the drives? If it's for anything apart from warranty replacement, you void the warranty. So even though you could reformat them for a PC, you can't just put them back in the NAS case if you need to return them. Although you might be able to make a sector-by-sector image of the drive to load onto the drive later, but that assumes the drive is working in the first place, which it wouldn't be if you were returning it for warranty.

Given the above two limitations, I wouldn't recommend this NAS even if you got it for below bare drive price. It's just too slow.

BTW I'm in hour 51 of my backup with only 1.6TB transferred.

    • Thanks for the update. Feel sorry for you regarding the torturously slow transfer speeds.

    • According to http://community.wd.com/t5/My-Book-Live/Clone-Book-Live-to-a…

You can clone the drives. Mainly cloning the boot partitions and resync all other data.

My previous MyBook world edition 2 (White light) took 8 hours to sync between a 1TB hdd to a blank disk.

  • I've had enough and I am demanding a refund.

    • Incredible - I threatened the device with expulsion and thought i'd give it one last try to see if it has decided to work as it should.
I am currently transferring 200GB of data onto the device at 29.3mb/sec and at the same time I am streaming video to my tablet and am 20 minutes into the stream and still have sound.
The best I have had previously was 5 minutes before sound cut out.

I feel like Basil Fawlty where he threatens to give his POS car a sound thrashing

      • Spoke to soon.
Damn you to hell MBL - you're going back

        • Hope you have some joy returning.

It best not be a problem for them.

          30-day return guarantee

WD Store is happy to accept returns of purchased items within 30 days of the shipment. Receive full credit for products that arrived defective or have become defective within 30 days of shipment.

          http://store.westerndigital.com/store/wdau/en_AU/ContentThem…

        • @Davros:

Store credit for a defective item return is not great. Also, illegal under Australian law if that's all they'll offer. They must replace, repair, or refund (actual money, not store credit). Well, they can offer you store credit, but you can refuse and insist on one of the three Rs.

        • +1

          @salem:
When will my credit appear on my credit card?
Once the return is received, please allow 7-10 business days for the credit to appear on your account. Credit will be issued to the payment method or credit card used for your original purchase only. WD Store does not issue credit for costs incurred in shipping a returned item.

(add: they organise courier if I have an RMA number)

        • @Davros:

          That's good to know :)

I just got an email from WD asking me to fill in a survey about how I am using my product (I registered it in the web interface). I will not be gentle.

    • +2

And then sit back and watch them do nothing about it :(

      • True. I'm hoping at least for "we'll pass this along to our engineers to look into". Aka no further action.

  • 8TB My book live duo is now $499. Even after 20% discount, it is still $399.2.

  • +2

    I received my 8TB DUO $319.00 today.

    WD are turds.

They cancelled my first order, then sent me a 15% and a 20% loyalty voucher, I logged back in re-ordered using the 20% voucher ($319) and they fulfilled.

    Allot of stuffing around though.

    • You are the lucky few to get the 20% at $320. Currently, even we have the 20% off, the 8TB version of mybook live duo is $499.

  • I ordered the 6 TB DUO last month. After two weeks my order got cancelled along with others. I though it’s all done. But surprisingly on Sep 8th I got email from WD saying they have posted the 6 TB DUO. I got the drive after two days. I called them and asked why they posted the drive after they have cancelled my order but WD rep said cancellation email was sent by mistake. Likely I got the drive for $240

    • Nice, congrats! you have just Ozbargained WD!

  • Finally got my full refund for this POS today, now to buy some 4tb drives and install them in spare bays and RAID

Since found out that I can easily stream to other devices around the house via the router anyway which was one of the reasons I bought the WD NAS POS in the first place.

I suppose I can thank WD for forcing me to learn a bit more about my own kit and how not to treat my customers so thumbs up there.

    • Except this was probably the cheapest way to get 2 4tb drives anyway? You could have just pulled them out and put them in your desktop's bays.

      • And if something went wrong with them I cant put them back in the NAS for warranty so I have read.

4tb's are $175 at MSY and a short drive away so the price is the same and the return is easier if there is an issue

        • Fair enough. :)
