    Our school uses Mathletics…

  • +3

Our public school gets free mathletics care of the smith foundation which is great .
My son also learns alot from khan academy and I often print out sheets from math-drills.com as well which are both free . There are tons of free sites out there so any paid site would have to be exceptional .

  • I got a free trial from them last year and my son who hates maths really liked it, but there was no way I was paying the total cost.
Maybe just worth considering if your child needs help in certain areas of maths. As I am a home educator we don't have the free mathletics, but I should purchase this also.
I am not sure if mathletics lets you go onto your child's account so you can see their results and then work on areas that they may need help in but I think that will be a sale point for me, will buy tomorrow and see what it is like anyway.

    • I suggest you try MathsOnline which is like an online tutor. It is customisable and very direct. The videos are fantastic.

I don't know of 10ticks. Mathlethics is good.

      • Thanks so much for that information, so many maths programmes are available, so I will be sure to check that out.

I just had a quick look at MathsOnline. I like their tutorial system (walkthrough with audio and video) - but the tutorial foundation is a lousy tutorial. I'll explain…

MathsOnline tutorial shows grids when trying to explain lowest common denominator in fractions. It would be much better to pictorially show real objects (eg. apples) being cut into different numbers of pieces - and explaining why you can't compare when you have different denominators (numbers of pieces). The MathsOnline explanation given was obtuse. I've seen kids struggle with this concept for this very reason - no link to reality.

Make sure any system you use is not condescending (don't talk down to your kids). Also, make sure it's grounded in reality. It's ok to have theory, but abstract concepts that aren't grounded in reality has a much lower comprehension and retention rate. Also, rote learning/repetition is not an ideal method - it skips the meaning, although you do become fast at regurgitating.

No idea about 10ticks. None of the videos would play… maybe that's a good thing for them ;)

If you see anything Montessori, you normally won't go wrong.

I haven't experienced MathsOnline in the early primary, so I can't comment. In the middle to upper it's great for reinforcing, extending and for kids with gaps in their maths from relocating, poor teaching etc. MathsOnline is an additional resource that complements the existing class curriculum.

"Rote learning/repetition" in a more advanced form has made a comeback in the form of the Explicit Teaching Method and rapid paced warm-ups of 20-30 minutes. I am not referring to regurgitating, but shifting learned concepts from the temporary memory to the permanent memory. It takes approximately 22 lessons for concepts to become permanent. The Explicit Teaching Method is being implemented by many forward thinking schools and the data I have seen is exemplary. Just don't mention rote…
