    "back-to-school"

    😂

    • Haha. I was actually typing up the deal whilst walking, soooo I guess it makes sense??

      • im clearly just bored. happy new year and thanks for the deal!

Could have been a typing error. If this is all we had to worry about, it would be a wonderful world

  • Off topic but I'm lost. I'm Gen X and we had to buy a ton of stuff when I was at school in the mid 70s to later part of the 80s. Pencils, textas, rulers, blah blah. My kids (7,11) go to public school and we fork out for the school pack required, a one off very small fee. Then we seem to need nothing else. So my question is….are schools still doing it like the old days when kids legit load up with these "back to school supplies", or is it more a private school thing?

    • Usually the school packs are an option. You can either buy that which has everything you need, or you go shopping and buy them yourself. I usually buy myself as I have a bunch of stuff rolling over from the previous year, or things from my other kids.

      • Ahhh ok that makes sense. Never dreamed of doing it myself and I would imagine I'll end up getting the wrong things. I guess my wife is so much closer to it than me - didn't even realise self sourcing was an option. Assumed whatever we hand over was kind of the locked in list that's needed for the year for each kid.

      • I wish our public school would do this. They ask us to pay quite a bit for loads of stuff that is either unneeded or could be bought more cheaply at kmart. I hope they're making extra out of this and so I try to think of it as an additional donation.

        • You'd always be able to source the stuff cheaper yourself if you have the option. Any "school pack" would generally have full RRP prices from the supplier. Plus which kids wouldn't enjoy the choice to get check out/select stuff themselves. Cheap school holiday fun with practical learning opportunities. ;-)

In Brisbane our experience with two public schools is that they both provided lists every year. Sometimes the P&C association raises money by offering packs with everything at a slightly inflated price, but we prefer purchasing ourselves.

The 2024 lists had a ridiculous requirement for 200 HB pencils per child, and I politely told them to get stuffed as there was no way our kid would use up more than a whole pencil on every school day (after deducting weekends and holidays). Apparently I was the only parent to say anything. Of the 40 pencils that went to school, 20 came back unused.

Our school asked for one pair of scissors per child every year, and you don't get them back. Where are all these scissors going?

Teachers love sharing in the left over scissors on our final two hour catered lunch on the last day. We share stories about how little Timmy managed to never glue anything in despite losing five glue sticks and how little Susie used her scissors to carve a shiv.

As for 200 pencils, I have known one student who would have gone through all of those, magically losing or destroying at least a pencil a day. One day i gave her a pack of cheap Aldi pencils I had in my draw. Perfectly fine, and already sharpened. By the end of the day they had all been lost or snapped in half.

I later learned that the trick when someone didn't have a pencil, I would offer anyone a brand new (non-Aldi) pencil and their trade-in would go to the forever pencilless.
