A great product. Have it installed on all of my computers and always good to have a spare licence.

Hard Disk Sentinel (HDSentinel) is a hard disk monitoring software with support of HDD/SSD drives. Its goal is to find, test, diagnose and repair hard disk drive problems, report and display SSD and HDD health, performance degradations and failures.

Hard Disk Sentinel gives complete textual description, tips and displays/reports the most comprehensive information about the hard disks and solid state disks inside the computer or in external enclosures (USB / e-SATA). Many different alerts and report options are available to ensure maximum safety of your valuable data.

The software monitors hard disk drive / HDD status, including health, temperature and all S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, built in most hard disks and solid state disks today) values for each disks. Also it measures the disk transfer speed in real time which can be used as a benchmark or to detect possible hard disk failures, performance degradations.

  • Thanks OP. I remembered I uninstalled this last time because it kept my mechanical drives I use for storage spinning all the time. I know it creates more wear to spin them up and down all the time, but I don't access them much and the extra hum from the drives annoyed me.

Is there a setting somewhere so it doesn't keep inactive drives spinning all the time?

  • Downloaded and works fine, but updated to the latest version (4.50 from 4.40 which is the download) and get an activation error :(

Believe you're unable to update, same thing occurred last deal. Uninstall updated version and reinstall from downloaded file.

    • It says in the 'readme.txt' that it CANNOT be updated.

  • the same 4.40 again, seems like it comes as free from time to time

  • Don't have to give real email address. This is a bonus.

  • Thanks for this. It picked up that my external 2 TB USB was near failure. Luckily was able to copy everything I needed off it to another drive. Lifesaver :)

  • Is this the same HDD Sentinel that's on the Hiren's disk?

    • I believe so, but they have recently cleaned up recent versions for more legitimate software.

  • Windows 7 / 8 has built in SMART monitoring feature, it will warn you ahead of disk failures.
Most Harddisk drive manufactures have their own free specific software for testing their hardware check out their websites.

    • Yes it will monitor and create event log entries, but it doesn't alert. On my HP MicroServer I was running a Windows 8.1 native software RAID array and at some stage one of the disks failed. I found it later as I was changing some hardware but I don't know how long I was on a degraded array. My web searching found no free software RAID monitoring, so I wrote a PowerShell script to report on the Health Status and Operational Status of the drives, degraded arrays are not often caused by SMART errors. I also enabled the "Windows Disk Diagnostic Resolver" scheduled task which is meant to action SMART errors and is disabled by default.

Hopefully this program will offer better reporting than my simple script. On installation it alerted me that my file history drive was filling up a lot faster than it should and was at 10% free space, excluding music from file history was a quick fix.

These software cost nothing but trouble. I can name a lot of those similar ones such as Regcure pro, Optimizer pro, Tune up utility, Driver tuner, Driver updater and so on. Now I know another one.

What are you going on about? Have you even tried this? Even just for monitoring drive health is great.

I think if you're running Regcure pro, Optimizer pro, Tune up utility, Driver tuner, Driver updater and so on all at the same time, you're going to have a bad time.

    Himefei,

This is nothing like the programs you mentioned, most of the ones you mention are snake oil, that bug you all the time to update this, that & the other. In other words really annoying, almost as bad as having a virus.

  • Best thing about this software is that it can read SMART info from drives in a hardware raid array (LSI 9260-4i with 28 port expander in my case).
