What's the difference between a HTC One M8 and the HTC One 801s? Or is there none?
M8 is 2014 edition, 801S is 2013 edition.
Don't know why everyone's started using the '801S' notation. It's always been M7 in the past, and it's all the more prudent to use that now to avoid confusion.

In case people aren't aware the i9506 is the Galaxy S4 with the processors of the Galaxy S5. They get the same results in benchmarks and perform the same in pretty much everything. Only notable advantages of the S5 are the camera which isn't that much better and water resistance. Some would argue that the screen and casing are better on the S5 but I'd say that's debatable and even if you fell on the side of the S5 it's a seriously minor difference.
I was really annoyed that it never really got wide distribution. I was expecting it to replace the i9505 (4G LTE version of the S4) but for some reason it never did.

One or S4?
I'd go for the One, myself. I have nothing against Samsung, myself, but HTC's skin will probably hold up better on older hardware, and that black anodized aluminium looks amazing. Only downsides would be the button placement on the front, and the huge top and bottom bezels, for me.
The i9506 has the Snapdragon 800/2.3GHz Krait 400/Adreno 330 and the HTC One has the Snapdragon 600/1.7GHz Krait 300/Adreno 320.
So the i9506 will happily outperform the HTC One.
If you prefer the design of the One then maybe it's a better choice. Maybe.
S4 for sure
I have a HTC one so here is my advise.
I find the camera on the HTC one to be very poor, especially in low light situation. It's nice to have a aluminium case, but if you don't plan to have a cover around it, dents will start popping up like mushroom if you are not careful with it.
Would love to move back to an Iphone, but the price is just ridiculous. Might give Samsung a go once my contract finishes. Not a big fan of big phones, wanted to move to a HTC one mini, but the camera is the same and it would be a big let down..
