That's bargain basement chicken torture right there.

    • +5

Nah; 500gms are like shittin' bullets.

Difficult to feel empathy with birds, but cage eggs don't feel right. I am a Ozbargainer at heart, but I usually grab those free range eggs. Poor chicken…

    • +2

you should see some of the "free range" farms, I wouldn't say a tin shed with a 10m wire runway for 200+ chooks is free range.

Anyway the bloody chooks need to be locked up or they eat all your veggies.

See, I am not full on animal rights activist/vegetarian and I know that probably also the free range shed aren't ideal, but come on, they are still living creatures. The whole cage egg business is taking it to an extreme. It feels right that they banned cage eggs in Europe.

        • +3

And Australia is 10 years behind, as with the transport of life animals.

Totally agree. Love saving money but not at the expense of the suffering of others.

      Cage eggs should be illegal.

      • Waiting for someone to bring up the SodaStream topic all over again…

        • What are you talking about. I love cage eggs and SodaStream :P

        • Mmm, carbonated eggs and ham.

        • @Letrico:

In some societies it's more of a taboo to cage egg laying hens than it is to enslave a people and steal their resources :)

Just look at the negs the Sodastream "deal" got (0) and how many this "deal" has (3 at last count)…

  • negging as this is not Nicholas Cage eggs at all.

    Gonna EGG this deal

      what an eggcelent pun.
      But I shouldn't yolk.

Cage eggs aren't a bargain even at $0. Pretty sure people who buy cage eggs will end up as KFC in their next life.

    • +1

Hmmmmm, lathered up in the Colonels secret blend of herbs and spices.

I agree BTW, no cage eggs but I still wouldn't mind being lathered up in the colonels secret blend.

  • Cage eggs are pure evil.

I am more than inclined to agree with you and also think that it constitutes a justified basis for a neg.

Even allowing for some of the vagaries surrounding 'barn-laid' and 'free-range' standards and their enforcement, anything (even li'l neg votes on an OzBargain deal), that might - even by the tiniest smidge - speed the transition from the caged 'means of production' that still goes on, is a good thing.

  • +2

You could argue barn laid are potentially better than free range due to the extreme temperatures and weather we see in Australia.

Whilst miles better than cage some of the free range runs I've seen arnt too flash.

  • +3

Not a bargain even if free. Free Range all the way.

We are talking about chooks aren't we? The things that run around without heads?
Negs are definitely not warranted. Eggs are usually well over $3 so $1 is a great deal caged or not.

    • "Contrary to what one may hear from the industry, chickens are … complex behaviorally, do quite well in learning, show a rich social organization, and have a diverse repertoire of calls. Anyone who has kept barnyard chickens recognizes their significant differences in personality." - Bernard E. Rollin, professor of philosophy, animal sciences, and biomedical sciences at Colorado State University.

      • True, if you'd ever had a chicken you'd realise they have feelings. They like to be held and stroked. They get scared and like to feel secure. They are habit forming. They can be friendly little creatures given the right circumstances. Unfortunately they can't vocalise and communicate like a parrot but I assume they may have the same level of intelligence. They don't belong cooped up in cages in hot tin sheds.

That ain't no way to treat a lady. Akin to proclaiming a bargain something made by slaves.

And yet nobody negs shoe deals when almost all are made from child labour. Do people care more about chooks than children now?
