is this any better than the ones on ebay for slightly cheaper?
I bought the $1 version of this a coupla months back, looks like it's the same blue holding piece that is included in this kit and my experience was rubbish - it's flimsy and broke immediately on my first attempt at using it.
I've got one of these (from ebay but looks identical) and the quality of most components is rubbish. That said, it's pretty handy for changing watch straps/links and batteries etc.
Do you have a particular brand of watch tools to recommend instead?
No, I'm no pro and don't even know any watch tool brands :) I just got it to change watch straps/links and batteries and they do the trick. I probably shouldn't have said 'rubbish', more that they are very cheaply made and don't instill a lot of confidence. I just thought I'd let people know so they don't get disappointed when they arrive.
You won't be buying these if you're a watchmaker (at least I'd hope not!) so if all you want is to be able to do a few fairly straight forward things yourself they should be fine. I'm not sure how long they'll last, but for the price, as long as you can get a few uses out of them you should be fine.
I have bought a set myself so I will find out soon. I hope I can use it to change the battery in my watch which has been sitting in my drawer for two years now.
