  • price is ok.. you can also get a lenovo for the same price same specs from the student store

So of the three above, which is best?

    • The one in this bargain.

    • +2

While the HP is a 3rd gen it still has the fastest CPU out of them. If you're playing games the Dells would be better (though don't expect much for games).

      • More looking at reliability and battery life rather than games.

    4th generation Intel Core i5-4210U Processor (1.7GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
    8GB RAM
    750GB Hard Drive

what do u guys think abt this? worth the extra $$ for the better processor n nVidia graphics?

    • Note: be careful and double check which graphics card this laptop has. After looking at the link again I am not sure if it is a 830M or 850M :-)

If 850M… laptop (HP 15-P008TX) has a pretty good graphics card for the price.

      NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-850M

I would go with this if you plan on playing games. 8GB ram is a bonus too.

Maybe try to negotiate it down to $670 or so. JB don't seem to mind bartering :-)

Bartering is not the correct word here.

    • JB are seriously confusing spec for that on their website, they say it's 10" and 850m, it's neither:

      http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/laptops/product-detail.htm…

      • HP website is also confusing:

        Display
        15.6" diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit (1366 x 768)

The HP Pavilion Notebook provides all of the benefits of a desktop in a sleek, portable package. Astounding sound from BeatsAudio™ and a crisp, clear Full HD display are just some of the benefits you can rely on for a superior computing experience.
        Features
        Windows 8.1
See it clearly with Full HD.
Get the ultimate Windows experience with the crystal-clear Full HD display optimized for Windows 8.1.2

the screen is only HD 1366 x 768, not full HD….

if you are ok with refurbs then check out Dell DFO for even cheaper

Out of the 3 under $500 laptops listed above new from JB, the HP would perform the best by about 15% on regular non graphics tasks, whereas the two with 4th gen will do slightly better in the graphics department.

Looking at specs they are fairly similar as in all have USB3, DVD Super Multi, Bluetooth, and W 8.1. If battery life is important to you, don't just assume that the 4th gen will naturally outperform the 3rd gen, as a lot of newer laptops/ultrabooks as a result now come with smaller capacity batteries. That is good for size/weight, which is also an important factor, but not so good for stamina.
They would all do similar in the reliability stakes, as they are all three entry level range laptops from same level computer companies both mass produced in China with similar lowish grade warranty back up and support.
Go into a store, have a look @ screen quality and personally I need to use a keyboard and mouse pad on a laptop in order to gage whether I really like to use it or not.

I guess either 3rd or 4th gen i3 should still be better than AMD processors?

      • a one-legged cat on a bicycle is better than an AMD processor.

        • +1

I do not agree with that broad outlook. We don't judge all of Intel's CPU's by the Atoms and Celerons of old do we. I agree that a lot of the cheaper laptops and desktop/all in ones with an AMD in the E, A4 or A6 range are weak performers. On the other hand their A8 and A10 quad cores perform really well, in some cases depending on which comparisons we make, outperform many i3's and even i5's, especially the range that is low voltage ending in U.
They also used to have better graphics built in than Intel on average, although that gap is closing fast with the newer Intel HD 4000 and up to Iris Pro range.
Here is one example of an AMD outperforming the Intel i3 4010u http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+A8-4500M+APU
What it comes down to is bang for your buck. Just do a bit of research and comparing when trying to get best performance for your hard earned ( or not :-) dollars.

@ozhunter68: the AMD is marginally faster (167 points) which is unlikely to translate much of a performance difference.

The AMD is also typical of AMD processors in mobile devices in that it also generates more heat and uses more power compared to the i3. This means that for a oh so slightly faster processor you're taking a hit to battery life in the process.

        • @ozhunter68:
AMD A8-4500M is a quad core CPU, if it is going to be faster than the i3 the app you use has to be able to multithread well otherwise the performance will probably be similar to an Intel Atom based CPU. Also according to notebookcheck Intel4600 > AMD A8-4500M > Intel4000 for GPU performance.

        • @douglasac10:

Yep, Max TDP 35 W vs. 15 W and I presume they are likely to be both frugal on power consumption at idle but at full load the AMD would consume significantly more on paper but is not faster in proportion to power consumption.
