I still don't know whether I need Chromecast or not :p

    • +1

Im still not sure either. I need some new in-ear headphones and these look pretty good for free?
      http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tdk-in-ear-headphones-ec42-red-d…

      • +1

No free delivery for those headphones

      • cheers picked up a pair for $4.95 delivered after discount

        • Yeah they look really good with noise cancelling and being in ear too. They are going for over $30 on ebay and with good reviews for $5 is still excellent buying!

        • FYI: They are not noise cancelling

        • @ShamelessBargains: are they noise cancelling or just noise suppressing?

        • i think the technical term is 'suppressing'

    • Chromecasts are good for what would be considered Google tasks, otherwise you can look at various other solutions, also for PC/TV, streaming devices and such. Hope that makes it clear.

    • You will need it, trust me ;)

    • +1

Very worthwhile for $39. I've got one and would recommend it!

      • +4

But why do you recommend it?

For many people it seems like a fairly redundant dongle, just another thing to buy and have around the house. If you do have good experiences, feel free to post them.

Personally I don't see the need, but there seems to confusion about what it actually does. Google, in my experience, isn't very good at marketing products and telling people why they need them. Contrast that to Apple who are the masters at it (even if they may have a technical inferior product).

    • +1

I bought one a few weeks back when everyone else bought one. I'm not saying it's bad but it seems like more work than what I'm prepared to do. I'm gonna give it to my dad, he likes to tinker with things. Maybe by the time he gets sick of it, I'll give it another crack.

      • +8

Chromecast requires the least tinkering of any current device…?

(eg. raspberry pi, apple tv, random android tv sticks, media pc, etc).

        • Agree, could not be easier to setup & use

      • How much easier do you want it to be?

    • +1

      Yeah, you sorta do

    • I bought one a while back. Not much use unless you live in the Google (Youtube) universe. Youtube streaming is great, and you can use Android to control it.

Streaming from your PC is slow and buggy (and in beta).

A standards compliant DLNA or Miracast dongle can be had for $23 on ebay and does much more:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l131…

      • +1

I have one of those. Hard to use. Thinking of getting rid of it.
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hot-WIFI-Display-Dongle-Receiver-…

      • +1

Streaming via Plex or qloud from my computer is very smooth…

      • Realistically everything media will eventually end up casting to it on the Android universe (and probably not a little of the apple one too).

Primarily I use BubbleUPnP to cast music to mine from the NAS.

If you want it on the big screen, this will be the google way of getting it there - particularly since AndroidTV has it built in. Well worth it and will get more support than Miracast.

    • Buy one, try it, if you don’t like it as I didn’t, return it. Be nice and repack it carefully.

      • +1

So the next guy can buy a new used one

        • +1

^ Yeah. I'd say 'be nice and repack it badly' so at least the next person gets a heads up.

    • +3

I definitely didn't need one, but I bought one anyway a few weeks ago at $39. I've been using it every damn day since I got it.

    • +1

I picked up a Chromecast earlier this week for $45 at JB. For that price its pretty good. I stream a lot of … legal video… and it's great for getting it onto the tv from the laptop. The quality is acceptable, even for video. Getting Pandora and Youtube on there is just a bonus.

      • i find it a bit laggy when streaming video even though my laptop and tv are right next to the router.

youtube is flawless and picture/sound is extremely good

    • +1

I have setup the chromecast from the first deal as follows to replace a raspberry pi running xbmc that crashed a lot. I have a HP server that hosts all my media. Installed Plex on it. Plex on the server has a movie directory which has done a great job of categorising the movies. As for tv shows, it failed miserably so I selected "home movie" option which doesn't attempt to categorise the media. The TV is stored rather neatly so it easy enough to navigate by directory (this is how I did it via the raspberry for the same reason). One more directory for completed downloads set to home movie again so as not to search for titles as this is just a temporary folder until I can be bothered to sort the downloads to folders.

I forked out to but Plex on my Android device. But I can use it on either phone or tablet. Chromecast plugged into tv powered from usb plug from tv. Select show from phone, click stream to tv, enjoy! From here on in, you can seek or pause playback via the phone. One issue so far. When my phone screen goes to sleep, playback is fine on TV, but when I unlock phone it to pause or something, I cannot regain control. If i open Plex on phone, it will start a new session. Rather annoying bug which I'll try and seek help with via the forums soon. I am yet to try via tablet. I'll post back with results.

      • Don't let your phone sleep.

        • +1

Battery drain. Sleep = screen turn off and lock

        • @bargdebarg:
For my part, I'd turn sleep off while watching TV (and then recharge) but if you find a fix, even better.

    • +1

I got mine and returned it when I figured I have to have internet to use it. I was assuming it only needed wireless.
Playing movies through a video player is a hassle and so is offline usage.

  • +6

Thanks. Got 2x AAA eneloops for $4.98.

FYI it's cheaper to place 2 separate orders of 2 packs of AA eneloops to get 4 AA eneloops instead of buying the 4pack by itself.

    • +3

Good tip, those eneloops are a great buy!

      • +1

        It also free shipping

    • +1

Doesn't work more than once on the same account. Use guest accounts.

    • +1

Grabbed the same - cheers ShamelessBargains (and Orpheus)

  • +2

Works on anything. Can't find min spend. Here we go again people…

  • +1

How to get free shipping? Shows $4.95 for me

    • +1

Some items are marked Free Shipping.

  • +1

I'm looking for a device that will stream movies and MP4 files from my laptop to a TV. I'm not interested in watching YouTube videos on my TV as I can already do that through my PS3.

Will this let me do that?

    • +1
    • +3

Your PS3 can already do that. I do it all the time - movies straight from my laptop (windows) to the PS3 - TV.

      • +2

Yeah, just set-up something like Plex on your laptop. Then PS3 can stream it all.

    • +1

I run Plex on my pc with an Android Media player (Similiar to chromecast) connected to the tv and its fantastic..

    • +1

what PVA said. Surely you have PS3 Media Server?

      • +1

I actually use Vuze - can download what shows you want and is the media server - easiest thing I have used.

  • The site isn't loading for me. Ozbargained?

    Edit: I'm back in :)

    • Works for me.

Telstra Nokia Lumia 520 will come to $89.00 with free delivery. That is a good bargain.

  • +6

free delivery for products over $499 is ridiculous.

  • +1

Coupon code "DS29519" is not valid.

This happened after I tried a second order.. logging out and trying as guest seems to be ok

I love how on the payment page there is a 'no payment required' option. It's almost like it was designed with this 'deal' in mind :-)

  • I'm still not using my Chromecast since I bought it last ds sale for 39$ lng, I'm having a problem with my netcomm nb604n router from tpg. Any help out there ozbargainerz? Help me Hw to set up my router please..

    • Mate I've got a chromecast and the same tpg modem. Just make sure you've added the devices Mac address to the modem. From there it should be a breeze. Install the chromecast app from the play store which should help. Let me know exactly what you're getting stuck on so I can help further.

  • Coupon code "DS29519" is not valid.

On sim card or top up card

    • Only valid for one use per account.

    • +1

      • FYI: I've used it twice on the same email address, but I checked out as guest and did not 'register' after the checkout. Then I made a second order without closing my browser, it automatically found my first email and let me order again using the code

EDIT: ordinarily I wouldn't abuse the system with multiple free orders… but this is Dick Smith. It's payback time.

  • +1

I just got a 4way power board because it's all I could think of that I need. It was $8.98 with free delivery, so it cost me nothing.

      • Thanks, updated it. Was looking for power board for all those electronics under the TV just in case!

    • awesome i was also in need of a extra power board, so have pair of headphones coming that cost me $4.95 and free power board coming, just put the power board order under guest account and used housemates name, is going to be surprised when gets random delivery from DSE and its a power board

Telstra PrePaid $30 Nano SIM Starter Kit for $5 delivered seems pretty good :)

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/telstra-prepaid-30-nano-sim-star…

    • Thanks! 83.33% off google play :D

  • +3

As tempting as it is, i wouldn't place more than 1 or 2 orders for things you are getting for free. The more orders the higher chance of getting caught..

    • +1

Maybe. Or more likely Dickies will cancel all orders that were 100% free, not just those who ordered multiple lots.

  • +1

    Nice!

  • +1

Does Dick Smith have specials like this often? I'm hoping for a discount offer after September as I'm waiting for a product release

  • Isnt this a normal ozbargain price for the Chromecast?

  • Dick must have sold 11 zillion of these Chromecast things over the past month. Somebody here should be getting a cut of it.

  • +1

How about this, using google you guys can search dicksmiths.com.au online for all items ranging from $0 to $10 :-)

Just type in the search: site:www.dicksmith.com.au $0..$10 OR http://goo.gl/HDwZ8a

    • Code doesn't work on prepaid vouchers though :(

  • +4

Lots of good things available! But I wouldn't be surprised if they cancel the orders.

    • +1

You won't lose any monies though since it was free? Fingers crossed. Buy now, worry later

      • oh definitely. My order is already in :)

        • +1

Thats the Ozbargain spirit right there! I hope your stuff comes :)

    • +1

      Meh nothing to lose

  • can't resist. nice find.

  • +1

Got some free earphones, thanks OP!

  • +1
  • +2

Awesome. I bought the Telstra Nano Sim for $5.

That's $30 dollars of Google Play credit for $5 dollars. Awesome.

I was tempted to go for a freebie but I think the chance of having the order cancelled is too damn high.
