  • bought before read any reviews….

    Hope all good….

    • +2

The fact that this deal got 250+ upvotes in one morning is a good enough review for me.

  • thanks OP!

  • my order status is pending, is it normal?

  • +2

Need this thing to sell out or the deal to expire real soon.. the higher the positive votes get the more tempting it is to buy even though I have absolutely no use for it.

    • +4

      Argh, same..

      Screw it.. buying.

      • If fooling around with an Android tab on the couch is illegal as Debo says, don't let anyone catch you screwing your chromecast.

  • Guys I just have a quick question.

My parents at the moment watch vietnamese drama shows off their ipad first gen. I want to know if I bought this chromecast, whether or not it could be viewed on their tv?

    thanks for your help

    • +2

a true ozbargainer buys first and asks questions later :-)

      • You may have confused 'ozbargainer' with 'money-wasting idiot'. Still, from the comments I've read, I can't blame you.

      • +9

i actually did buy first and now im asking. lol

  • Coupon code "SUPER10" is not valid

    • must have been exhausted.

      • Could be expired but keep in mind it wont work for 'Click & Collect' and I noticed it sometimes wont work if you're logging into your Dick Smith account as I think it detects if you've used a voucher recently then takes the discount away. You can buy it manually without logging in no problem.

    • Just worked for me

  • guys, if i have smart tv (with network cable now connect it to my router) will i still need this? i just want to see my photos from android mobile to my big tv. currently using dlna function but there is lag before my photo appear on my tv.
will it instantly appear using chromecast?

    or Tronsmart T1000 is better?

    • Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the lag is in either the tv or the android mobile you're streaming from… don't think a chromecast will help much here =/

  • Am I really dealing with DS? After more than 3000 clicks, there's still stock for it.

Only have a vague idea of what it's for. But with so many + votes, it can't be wrong.

Oh another new toy. Thanks OP.

    • When I bought the logitech G400S mouse from last month ebay deal.

It showed about 500 sold, but still in stock. So I bought it. And then, 2 weeks passed, not a single update, I sent 1 email to DSE Ebay, reply was now on back order. Can arrange full refund or store credit. No estimate time….

    • Early orders might have gone through but not sure about in thousands

  • +1

Do I need this if I already have a WD TV live?

    • +14

You are officially banned from OzB because you think. DO NOT think before you buy. Think later.

      • +3

Apologies, I don't know what came over me…

    • Same quest: I have Astone AP110D Media player which can streams of my computer on Tv. Does Chromecast does same? Anything different?

      • I had one of them, old device now.

Basically the Chromecast has heaps more features and intergrates with phones and tablets.

    • +1

Depends what you want to do! If you're happy with what your WDTV Live does for you then dont bother however if you want to start streaming legal online content (ie. YouTube, Google Play Movies etc.) easier then this might be the go.

Netflix, Amazon and all those other cool services they've had OS for ages will surely be here soon so a Chromecast will really come into its own for the 'normal' person then!

  • I take it this is better than a smart tv? :)

    • +14

No, a smart TV has a screen built-in.

  • Wonderful, thanks OP!!

  • +2

I just want the ability to share my Nexus 5 screen to my TV. Winnah!

  • Just bought one.

But I am sorry to say I feel some of the orders might be on back order just like what i have for the logitech G400S mouse from last month ebay deal. Still on back order….

  • have been tossing between a Raspberry Pi vs Chromecast. This price is so good to be missed.

    Thanks OP. Got one.

  • Was debating at $49, but now at $39, how can I say no?!

  • +2

doh - no more spare HDMI ports… can't buy :)

    phew - saved $39

  • Can I select AusPost locker for delivery or I need to sign for deliver?

  • Anything it can do which HTPC cannot?

I already have two HTPCs attached to two TVs so wondering I really need it?

    • +2

Use less power for a start…

      • $39 less?

  • The code says limited to the first 500 customers. I tried to do a click and collect but they wouldn't let me. Nor does it work online too.

  • -1

Thankyou! Was going to by one last week when it was $10 off but baulked at the shipping cost. Couldn't resist any longer at $39.

  • -4

As much as I wanna get one, I'm gonna give it a miss till they put Foxtel Go on it so I can watch Foxtel in my other bedrooms without any additional cost. Presto is a extra fee so no thank you.

    Give me Foxtel GO!!

    • +1

It's been a while since I've had Foxtel but do you think they'll actually allow that to happen? Surely they're still up to their old tricks and will go to extremes to try to prevent anyone getting anything for free… or have they hardened up a bit lately?!

      • You can do it with Apple TV playing on your iMac and then Air Play it to ATV, can't do it via iPhones or pads hdmi

    • There's a Foxtel Go app for PC so if you have a HTPC you can just run that. It's just that controlling it from your couch with a keyboard ain't too flash.

    • You could get the foxtel go app for an android device and then mirror it to a chromecast?

      • Possibly but keep in mind the Chromecast mirroring is pretty laggy and crappy at the moment so maybe not for another 6 months.

  • Subtotal on the right hand side should say 39, after putting Promo code, then logging it, it automatically went back to 49. just edit card and put promo code back in. by the way, Thanks OP!

  • Website Maintenance error now?

  • Excuse the noobish, a few Q's as I've no idea what this actually is:

    1) Someone mentioned plugging one into TV, then stream from HDD connected to router, is this unit useless to me if I can connect HDD directly via USB assuming I'm happy with offline content?

    2) OP mentioned "Set it up with a simple mobile app, then send your favourite online shows, films, music and more to your TV using your smartphone, tablet or laptop.". So it mirrors what's showing on my devices? So do I need to have my iPad for example playing a song/movie chewing up battery to watch it on my TV?

    3) Is this of any use to me if I have a smart TV?

I'm not understanding the practical purpose of this thing…

      1. Yes
      2. Does not chew battery as it tries to get direct stream, e.g. chromecast will go to youtube and play off that, not your iPad
      3. Not really, although you can use your phone to quickly get a movie on it rather than jumbling with clunky UI
        1. Still confused, so what then is the use of my iPad in this instance, does the chromecast connect to my router to pull contents directly? Or is my device used as a remote to type things for example? If not, how do I input/search?

        Cheers

        • +1

The Chromecast is 'directed' by the phone/tablet/other device to "go there and play this". You can then turn that device off and the content still plays perfectly on the TV until you turn it back on to tell it to stop or play something else or whatever.

Basically it uses a phone/tablet/other device as a remote control however it can do other things too…Chromecast can also stream content or from or mirror your phone/table/other device and of course you wont be able to switch the device off or go out of range while doing that plus your devices battery will drain etc. too.

  • Purchased one. Not sure if it would add any value than my Astone media player but its good price to try one.

  • I got Website Maintenance error too, but I simply tried again and I got through. Then I paid via Paypal, took a long time (almost 30 seconds) then the order was placed. Order status shows processing now under My Account.

I have no idea why I purchased this! I'll think later. If not I'll just sell it. Damn you ozbargain! So many days I resisted going to ozbargain telling myself I don't need to buy anything. 2 minute slip-up and $39 gone :((

  • why it shows the price $49 for me ?

    • +1

Read carefully you have to put the coupon code I can still add it without problem.

  • Coupon Code seems expired…….

  • +2

To the new adopters here for the Chromecast, shameless plug for http://www.reddit.com/r/chromecast/

You've come in to the right time for the Chromecast. Developers are starting to play around and develop more apps for it. Google is still pushing apps and updates out for it.

  • caved in and got one!

  • Coupon still works. Thanks for posting.

  • got one. thanks rep. :)

  • still working for me. Had to put in code at the end just as I entered credit card details.

  • Got one. Even already have Apple TV. Checkout was terrible, need reset password.

    • Interested to hear how Apple TV compares with Chromecast considering i'm on the Apple ecosystem (iPad, iPhone). Although I have a macbook that I use Chrome browser on.

      • Yeah, I will play with them and hopefully have some fun:-)

  • Can this plug into the HDMI port of a digital flat panel monitor and provide full function, or does it need to plug into an actual digital TV?

    • how would the flat panel do audio?

      • heh, ok .. how about the HDMI port of an audio receiver/amp with passthru to the flat panel?

        • +1

I'll be testing this when I get my 2nd unit… but that'll be next week after this deal is over becasue my first unit will be used 24/7 until then and I wont be able to tinker with it :)

        • +3

That's where mine is plugged in - works fine for me.

        • Good to know - thanks for the confirmation!

      • via an Audio out jack, or built in speakers.

    • also wanna to know.

  • Got it…thanks op

  • Is chromecast just appletv on a stick? Everything in my house is Apple so not much point?

  • -3

Any reasons I need to get it. At the moment I connect my tablet or laptop directly to the TV.

  • Thanks OP!

  • +2

checkout is dicked at the moment.

  • By the number of clicks for this deal, I wonder if the promo code has reached it's 500 limit.

    • … or was there even a limit at all?!?

    • Headphones anyone?

  • Great to see this is popular on here. It's an awesome device.

I've got a htpc and find this very convenient to use along with the pc. Anyone want to a htpc wondering if this is with it, give it a shot and see what you think.

Great when people are over for a night of flicking through youtube vids. Everyone can queue videos.

  • I only paid $29 for one at JB Hifi. The receipt says $49, but the cashier scanned the same $20 voucher code twice (from Giftpay on my phone). I said she didn't scan one, correctly, and she wouldn't admit she was wrong. Anyway $39 is a good price for a unit that will continue to receive support for some time yet.
Admittedly, I have only really used it to wirelessly stream NRL games on my netbook to the TV. It has been a bit jumpy, compared to when I did it using my DVI cable.

  • Thanks op

  • Is the streaming quality as good as watching it directly?

My TV has USB ports and can already play most media, so if I want to do that I just put the mkv files onto USB stick and insert it into the TV.

It won't be streaming, but whatever. It ensures I don't have bandwidth or wireless range problems and best PQ.

    • Streaming local content is only a fraction of what Chromecast can do so if that's all you need it for then it probably isn't a good investment even at $39. Regarding the PQ though I was pretty amazed at how well it displayed large Full-HD MKV movies and couldn't pick a difference between it and playing direct.

      • +3

Crap.. I didn't need it and already bought one just because everyone else did. With 450+ upvotes, it's like seeing a massive queue for something. Whatever it is, it has to be good right? So I just bought one. Kind of hate what this site has done to me..

        • I heard that!

.. my WDTV Live isn't happy wiv me right now!

        • @Wally:
Just listed my 2 wdtv's on eBay - Chromecast is just too good.

      • does streaming from your tablet to the tv over chromecast actually use bandwith though? I thought it doesnt?

        • I'm not talking about internet bandwidth but wireless bandwidth.

Transfer speeds with wireless can be really crappy and unstable depending on distance. It seems to deteriorate quite dramatically. At least for me.

My living room is 2 rooms away from my dual band N900 router, and transferring files is less than 1MB/s. I'd have to imagine streaming quality will be affected.
