Didnt need one but bought anyway.

Why did I have to check OzBargain before work.

  • Thanks, not needed but bought one. Excellent gift option I must say.

  • +1

Bought one of these a few weeks back for $49 delivered, Brilliant little gadget so i don't have to turn on my PS3 (or log it to another room) everytime i wanna stream something.

    • I use mine mainly for music.

I can power up the amp with the chromecast plugged in the back, and then control playlists on it from a tablet, without needing to have any display fired up.

Mirroring (that just turned up) is OK, but there is lag, and the sound on games isn't quite right (making it's use as a game console dodgy).

      • Wait, you can stream games from PS3 to Chromecast? That sounds fun even if its a bit laggy…

I was actually using my PS3 to stream movies from my PC, now i don't have to lug that thing to another room if i wanted to watch it elsewhere, just take the chromecast =)

Ordered another one so i can take it with me on the go =)

        Cheers OP!

        • Nah, stream games from the tablet to the big screen. I was trying Real Racing last night - but it really wasn't up to it. The sound wasn't right and the half second lag was a killer. Might be more usable with a more turn based strategy game.

I wonder if there are any ARM chips with built in fast x264 encoders? I can see a market developing for having hardware encoders in tablets specifically for mirroring to displays without taxing the CPU.

        • @sane: Haven't tried that yet, do you need any specific app for that?

I know i cant stream my N7 to it =(, i can only stream vids from my tablet using real player cloud or from my PC via Plex.

        • +1

Basically what happened is that Google released an update to chromecast yesterday (it automatically updates) which allowed it to be seen as a cast destination for a whole raft of phones and tabs (N7 2012 excepted). Thus a new square turned up on most peoples' quick settings.

Press the cast quick settings button, select the chromecast, and the phone/tab screen is sent to the TV screen - so anything you do/play/etc. can be viewed there.
Apps like BubbleUPNP are still better if you are streaming movies from your NAS, but it gives you more options for apps that don't have cast built in.

        • @sane: Cheers mate, will test that on my N7.

Should work on the 2013 model right?

        • @ProjectZero:
          Did last night for me…

  • Finally a decent dick deal

    • +10

I know, the recent ones have been a bit flaccid.

    • Give us the dick we all know and love!

      • +1

you may love dick it doesn't mean the rest of us do.

        • Plenty of people have been boned by Dick and aren't happy about it.

    • That's assuming he doesn't pull out and cancel your order as is his wont.

    • I think you should wait for it to actually come in before prematurely praising it.

  • Thinking this or Apple TV

So with Chromecast I can stream all my movies from my iMac to it?

There is no way to airplay from iMac to Chromecast like you can with Apple TV correct? I wanted to watch foxtel go on another tv

    • No because 'Air Play' is for Apple TV and 'Casting' is for Chromecast. But if you can get your movie on iMac to play in Chrome browser, then you can cast it to Cromecast.

You can use a Foxtel ios app (like Presto) to watch movies on Chromecast.

      • This mean FoxtelGo??

  • +1

Wow…already got a tracking number from startrack.

  • +1

Thanks got one. Checkout was horrible.

  • +2

    Got one. Thanks!

Weird GST calcs between DSE & Paypal.
    DSE = $35.45 + $3.55 tax = $39
    PayPal = $34.55 + $4.45 tax = $39

    I'm being overtaxed godammit!

  • +1

Good guy Dick. Discounts Chromecast AND free delivery.

    • glad I didn't buy earlier week when it was $10 off but $5 delivery

  • No Netflix support from oz with these lil' babies?

    • not without vpn

      • +1

I thought this wasn't possible, even with Unblock-US or Getflix, because the DNS is hardcoded into the Chromecast or is this bypassed if you make the changes directly at the router?

      • +1

Don't use VPN - tool slow. Use dns service like unblock-us or getflix.

  • Just bought one for the sake of playing around with it. Lets see if my order gets cancelled for the second time(first was for a macbook air + chromecast). Paid with Paypal so they can't say my creidt card is compromised.

  • Just ordered, at this price it can't be wrong

  • Resisted and decided against it. If you have a HTPC, PS3, XBOX, Roku, Apple TV, WDTV, PS4 etc, you won't really need one.. If you don't, this is a good cheap solution.

    • +5

I disagree about the PS3 and the PS4… those aren't portable like the chromecast. Even the HTPC, unless it is a NUC, doesn't seem all too portable.

I reckon the selling point for this is the fact that you are not tied to one single area of your home. Whilst technically the PS3, PS4 and the HTPC doesn't tie you down, it is still alot more effort to move those compared to the Chromecast.

      Just my 2cents.

      • Didn't even think of the portability factor.
Seems like a great little device. Perfect for our little tv set up and motels and stuff.

        • Ya, pretty clever. Great for family holidays, easy to take instead of carting around cables and DVDs and stuff…

    • I don't have a HTPC nor NUC. This is value for money

  • thanks got one..

  • How does this compare to the raspberry pi when it comes to Plex?

  • Anyone tried the new update and mirror a live video stream? How is it?

    • The chromecast 1.7 wasn't at play store last night, so you have to download and install the apk.
I had problem with audio. Sometimes it doesn't comes out at the TV. I have to reconnect and the audio works.
      Tested on S5.
Overall it's a great device for my cheap TV.

  • Been waiting to grab a second chromecast, bargain price plus 5% off using Wish GC

    thanks

    • Got one Thanks OP. bargain price plus 20% off using Wish GC from AMEX/Masters deal.

  • this is great, love my GCC

  • likely DTS support wont ever be available for this so if you have a lot of "backed up" movies with the dts track only then they will need an aac or ac3 track. There's a licensing cost with dts

Maybe someone will make a chromecast compatible app that can downmix the audio while playing the video.

  • Btw OP, this deal seems to be limited to the first 500 customers as it says on the DSE site, might want to update the description?

  • +28

    Not needed.
    Not wanted.

    Purchased.

    Thanks OzB :)

    • Same, though I'm sure I will find a way to use it for the family.

      • Same!

      • My thought exactly

    • +1

Same here. after 223+ votes . some time we don't need to think to purchase.

    • Impulse buy strikes again… I don't know if I'm :( or :)

      • Been looking at the submit button for a few hours now… should I or shouldn't I?

  • Does it support Window 8 mobile phone ? Anyone ?

  • Ah, just read you have to plug power cable into this - is that right? I thought it was powered via HDMI, which in hindsight I'm not sure why I thought that as standard HDMI doesn't power devices.

No deal then - don't want a power cable running down the wall - or can I whack this directly into my Marantz AV receiver?

    • +2

If you have a USB port on your TV you can probably use that to power it. Or assuming your receiver has HDMI you could do it that way.

      • Yes to both - thanks.

      • It depends on your usb output - most USB ports on TV's that I have tested seem to be a little low for my Roku Streaming Stick, but unsure of the Chromecast power requirement.

  • +2

Not sure why I needed this lol

    Purchased!!

    Cheers

  • I can only buy it instore as I am traveling overseas
Is it possible to collect it instore for this price?

    • no unfortunately

    • if your overseas how do you get to a store??

  • So confused even after reading a few online comparisons.

I have an Apple TV for which I use Beamer and/or VLC App to stream ANY video format from laptop/iphone to TV. Simply drag the video into beamer and it goes straight to apple TV.

Can I do this with Chromecast??? Ie just stream any video format sitting on my laptop with subs to my tV? Disadvantage is no remote I guess….

  • Thanks OP, bought one; finding a use for it will come later :)

  • thanks OP!

  • +2

grabbed one! thanks OP. No idea what ill do with it. Ill look up some cool things once i get it

  • Thanks OP

  • Can I use this on a PC/laptop instead? I don't have TV at home.

  • Got one, Thanks OP !

  • Oh man I bought one and I don't even know why.
    Thanks ozbargain…

  • Got one too! Thanks OP!

  • All my friends keep telling me am missing out for not buying the Chromecast. But I can't understand how? I don't use a TV as a TV. All my TV's are screens for my computers. All my computers are connected on the same network and share my media server to access files and internet. I can watch Netflix, use Spotify etc that the phone can..just from computer. I can stream Steam games or play PC games locally. I don't need to cast my droid games on the TV screen. My droid phones work as a remote to control the TV as well as the computers. Am I missing out on something which the Chromecast can do which my current setup can't?

Really want to join the Chromecast bandwagon but I can't see what will I be using it for :\

    • +7

buy one now and we'll respond a little later ;-)

    • +1

same - i have media centre TV's etc - but a Chromecast good if you are just fooling around with an Android tab on the couch (illegal in some countries) or friends visiting can just cast off their phones etc

      • +4

Its illegal to fool around with an Android tablet on the couch? :O

  • Hmm I won't jump just yet as I don't really have a need for this product. I'm not a massive fan of using wifi for streaming movies, especially when you need to fast-forward 1080p files. I connect to my plex server on my tv and when from using the built in wifi to connecting using gigabit ethernet; least to say there was a massive difference!

Apart from streaming from your mobile device, does this device have any other uses?

    • Is the wifi on the Chromecast wireless AC? This can make a massive difference if your router is also wireless AC. I'd still use gigabit Ethernet when possible though.

      • Straight 2.4Ghz - no 5Ghz

Frankly its the biggest mistake they made IMHO - no reliable 1080p possible as a result.

It's built down to a price.

  • +1

Done! you cant go wrong for $39

  • +6

Just bought one, have no idea how it works, what it does or whether it's going to help Climate Change, but anyway…I'm an Ozbargainer!

  • i can assume that chromecast can replace the slimport-hdmi cable(for n5 and n7) and mhl-hdmi(for samsung phones)?

    • +2

As the saying used to go and still applies today "If it ain't copper, it ain't proper!" so cables will always provide the ultimate performance for everything you can think of however most decent wireless solutions such as this are oh-so very close and for most domestic applications the convenience far outweighs the super high-end performance requirements of cables.

So to answer you question, yes… but there's still a ways to go before it's perfect.

      • i am always after convenience. the tv stick (android) was replaced by roku 3 and i recently bought the cables. it seems i dont need a chromecast. i already have a roku, but….self-control….

  • Got one, cheers! I'll figure out what to do with it later since my tvs are both smart tvs and connected to ps3. Too good to miss.

    • I never got gift cards when they only sent half my batteries :(

  • Order already shipped!

    • Same here!

  • Good work Google. Next up…Google TV, which is even more amazing.

  • Thanks, OP. That was a good one.

I do wonder why the click-n-collect option costs $49, though…

    • +2

They want you to pay more to actually walk in store and collect it.

They are willing to discount $10 for shipping the thing using express service.

      Great logic Dick!

      • Looks like mine got collected by Startrack from the local store I drive past every day. I probably won't be around when it's delivered meaning Startrack will leave it at the post office (which is next to the DSE that I drive past every day) so that I can drive there to collect the package. Brilliant. Truly brilliant…!

Inception or Mr Bean - you decide.

        • +1

Great isn't it. I called them to see if I could pick it up instead at same price from the DSE I was about to drive past, nope.
Fine you guys pay for the freight. Smart move.
