My next notebook will be this style. They're affordable now! Can't wait!

    • +26

Thats what I said about my second wife lol

      • How can the next wife be more affordable in Australia? She will be equally expensive if not much more than the current one, and you are getting a lot poorer with every extra Ex.

        • obviously you didnt get the joke

        • +2

always that one guy that gets over-analytical about passing jokes

dude u forgot to factor in rising house prices, interest rates and rising inflations in your thesis

  • Nice price, it was 1300 euro when it was released according to a youtube video.

    • It was $1799 at JB only 6 months ago and since then it's been reduced multiple times….

      • +4

i always find JB selling overpriced laptops/tablets and etc…

  • +3

    This is a bargain.

For those wondering, I bought one of these about six months ago as a business machine and it has been fantastic. IMO, better than my Macbook pro. The keyboards and screens are superior, and the build quality is top shelf.

The ability to select what is displayed on the second screen is also really neat, and has served well on business trips when people need to be showed how specific functions work without the need for them to be standing over your shoulder.

At this price, it's a steal.

    • +5

only 4 gb of ram though, not upgradeable :(

      • +1

Ouch.. not upgradable? Laptop used to have one spare slot for ram and this one doesnt have?

        • Soldered on I think.

        • That's the way most of the smaller, lighter ultrabooks/hybrids are going. Also no user removable batteries.

        • @ozhunter68: and macs.

        • How's the battery life though if not replaceable? I assume this is ultrabook style e.g. 5hrs + for everyday browsing, internet/wifi and other tasks? Basically without constricting use to limited battery usage functions?

  • The 13" isn't a bad price at $999 as well. I'm wondering if the specs are 100% accurate as they seem to be almost cut and paste between the 11" and 13" models. Same dimensions for both models???

    • +1

      thats i5 though

    • +1

This is the old gen processors, with the 3xxx CPU code. This means it is not a Haswell chip. The Haswell has several advantages, the most critical being more energy efficient. From reviews of a 3xxx vs a 4xxx CPU laptop, the 4xxx (Haswell) has almost double battery life and slightly cooler running temps.

It is still a great buy but it misses out on something very crucial for some, so that is worth taking note of.

      • hate to woner how my i7 -2630QM matches up to 3xxx and 4xxx then :(

3537u-i7 according to COTD, what would the price difference be to a same spec but 4xxx I7 do you reckon? + $100? or more?

  • +3

Are they refurbs though? Exactly the same pricing on Staticice for refurbs.

    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=asus+taichi…

If they are new great, but I'd be worried they are really refurbs since COTD does sell refurbs…

    • +1

They clearly mark their products when they are refurbs, for example https://www.catchoftheday.com.au/event/39757/product/samsung…

      • not always there was a big fiasco with an order of netbooks that they never declared to be refurbished.

        • +1

Hopefully they have learnt their lesson.

  • +1

Just a word of warning (although you may not care) - the Touchscreen is only available on the outer screen. The inner screen is not touch, so dont expect both sides to be touch enabled. Furthermore, the drivers are painful apparently and need to be custom from Asus in order to make the dual screens work properly.

  • +1

Great deal, but is the second screen really that useful in laptop mode? At the angle I Use my laptop the other person would have to have their head on the table to see what's going on. Seems like a gimmick, apart from that it does allow it to be used like a tablet.

    • +7

Not good when your watching porn and someone walks in on you and see's all the action on the outer screen …. ouch

      • +7

Or could be an opportunistic way of creating your own American Pie moment.

"Oh I see what you are looking at, would you like a hand with that?".

        • i see what you did there

        • would you like a hand with that?"
or with American Pie it could be "would you like a pie with that"? lol

  • +1

It seems to be extremely expensive if anything goes wrong with the screen though.

  • +1

Only one side is touch enabled. Read the review to help you decide.
    http://www.cnet.com/au/products/asus-taichi-series/

  • +4

Hmm, 3h 41m battery life (according to PCMAG's review), think I'll skip it.

Concur that for the price though, it is great compared to other retailers of you are looking for such a unique machine (dual screen).

  • Great price, not convinced about the design. I'll stay with my MBA for now

  • +2

Battery life in reviews makes it a no go. At 11" I expect it to last at least 6-7 hours on one screen….but it's only 3-4 hours which is a letdown.

  • +1

3rd gen CPU? The battery doesn't last long like those on 4th gen.

  • I was thinking about buying this but the front screen isn't touch screen and that sort of matters to me lol plus
I don't like buying 2nd hand or refurb electronics ;/

    Solid price though

    • It's a brand new item!

  • Everything looks really good..then you get to the battery life. If that got at least 6-8hours on moderate use from a single charge. I would've bought it in an instant.

  • +1

One of my college bought this laptop couple month ago, big problem is, if you upgrade to Win 8.1, the 2nd screen back light will NOT turn on!, this is known issue of this laptop, confirmed by ASUS. not sure this issue has been fixed yet.

I personally will go with Macbook air.

    • +1

I have this laptop, with Windows 8.1 installed and my second screen still works fine. You just can't install the latest Microsoft Update, one of the patches breaks the second screen drivers.

    • +2

Depends on what you want, an Air doesn't offer the touch screen dual sceen and tablet mode so completely different beast.

  • Having owned the 13" version of this for about 6 months now, I can highly recommend it. The only downside, as pointed out before is the battery life which is about 4 hours for me with constant use. The screens are both beautiful, and the SSD makes it very snappy. The laptop itself is very light, and is built very well, and the keyboard and trackpad (with 4 finger gesture support) are all really good.

I use it at work for programming and other technical tasks, and when I get home I use it as a tablet whilst sitting on the sofa watching TV.

  • +1

Very good price if this is brand new. I got 11'' and 13 '' . I like the 13'' . The only window laptop i like. But if you break the screen , it s cost $583 for replace it.

    • +4

I guess you have broken yours?!

      • yes,it s broken and my heart stop for 30s when they tell me the repair cost. :(

  • +1

Just email COTD and with the question: Is this 100% new or refurb? Also does it come with the factory accessories (which come with the new one in box, e.g. case, stylus pen)

    Got a reply here:

Is it meant to be George Costanza on their website, or just a ripoff?

  • This kills the over priced Surface 3, tempted to get one…

    • Not sure how kills the SP3 ie. screen, battery life, weight etc.

    • Lol personally I think this is an average device. Interesting concept but battery is piss poor and primary screen isn't touch. If anything it's more comparable to SP1 for batt life and processor. I guess the larger memory is a plus, but doesn't make up for the batt life if you need it.

  • I've got one of these myself and have noticed that after updating to Windows 8.1, the outside screen fails to turn on at all now. Does anyone know where to find the correct drivers to fix this? Not that keen to revert back to Windows 8 just because of the screen.

  • There is a firmware update that fixes the windows 8.1 issue I'm pretty sure

  • i wonder if the angle between "presentation viewing " VS " Typing Viewing " have to be dead set in 90 degree angle to please both parties ( Viewer and PResenter). However, i found it really difficult to Type anything with screen in 90 degree angle, and if i tilt it down to 95 degree angle, my audience wont be able to see my presentation. Great concept but useless in actual practical usage. Correct me if my theory is wrong :)

  • Sold out. Mark as expired please.

Thanks jibupaul for posting this deal!

I remember when it was posted on Ozbargain last year for $1600 from Costco. No I said! Tis too high!
When Ozbargain said the i5 11" unit was going for $799 from dickies I said NAI! I want the i7!
I nearly bit the bullet for a refurbished unit during the Ebay 15% off event I heard about from Ozbargain but I held strong! I don't want a refurb! I want a new one for that price!
When COTD had the EOFY sale with 25% off this unit last week dropping it down to $980 I said No! It will go lower! Ozbargain will tell me when!

Sure enough Ozbargain delivered! I wanted to wait for ShoppingExpress to drop their price lower. But alas! I cannot hold anymore. But thanks to Ozbargain I like to think my purchase was truely a bargain!

    =D

    • After your gripping story, did you get one before they sold out?

      • Indeed I did! What a crap ending that story would have had if I hadn't.

Unfortunately I did pay by PayPal in my rush. I should have used my card which gives me free extended warranty on purchases.

  • imagine if there was NSFW stuff on your screen and you accidentally flip it to the other screen in the office….
