  • Not exactly good for smartphone owners; $1.32/60KB GPRS data (see http://www.everydaymobile.com.au/edmobile/wps/portal/mobile/… )

    • It runs on Optus' 2G network so it is all round terrible for smart phone owners.

  • looks interesting. Especially when i compare it with my current pre-paid deal

    Vodafone Prepaid - 365 plan. 25c flagfall, 25c/30sec. 24.5c text, Expires (365 days). the only benefit is that i get free v2v minutes.

    The deals get better and better. tpg '$10 cap' looks good too.
    looks like i've got some decisions to make :)

  • Looks good if you just want the absolute basics (which I think is what they are going for anyway)

  • The difference is that the vodafone plan lasts for 365 days vs the Woolies plan that lasts for 100 days. so if you are a very light user then the vodafone deal maybe better.

    What next homebrand prepaid??? Wonder if Coles will try to do the same??

    • wow. this is a suprise. I dunno whether i would trust my local supermarket with my mobile plan though..

      • It's not your local supermarket it's the biggest retail corporation in Australia/New Zealand!
        It's probably your local bottle shop, servo, electronics shop, supermarket, department store and hotel.

  • +1

    it made me giggle when I first heard Woolworth is selling its own Mobile prepaid cards.
    After doing a bit of readings, I have found some interesting info.

    1. the service aims squarely at "baby boomer" Mothers who are shopping at Woolworth. These mums wants 2
      things: "talk and SMS". And no other fancy bits. Woolworth also assumed these mums already have an old phone.
    2. $2 SIM is to lure them to try out the service.
    3. The simple plan and call rates also try to assure these mums that it's all very easy.
    4. Woolworth is not trying to steal gen x or gen y users.

    I don't have a problem with this. I reckon it's probably a good thing.

    I can imagine a funny dilemma: short term tourists buying more of these than mothers. ;p

  • Check out pennysim: http://pennytel.com

    • That sounds confusing. Do you have a standard mobile phone number or do you use a DID for incoming phone calls?

      And when you make a call, you must first call the access number, then dial the number you wish to call?

      • Yeah I'm confused as well which is why I havent moved to it. I have the pennytel mobile application which automates the smart dial, but it still is kinda clunky to use so wouldnt want to use it every day.

  • For an ordinary mobile user — ie, not using VoIP, there is the Exetel/Vodafone plans — easier to get if you have broadband with them already which I can help you get with rebates:
    http://affinityvision.com.au/adsl/

    Exetel/Vodafone plan options (just two of them - there are other choices):

    Plan               A       B       C       D       E       F       G
    *Mobile 1       $20.00   $0.00   $0.00   $0.33   $0.33   $0.44   $0.22
    *Mobile 2       $20.00   $5.00   $5.00   $0.30   $0.30   $0.43   $0.15

    A=Once Off Activation Charge
    B=Monthly Minimum Charge
    C=Included Calls in Minimum Charge
    D=Per Min Calls To Landlines
    E=Per Min Calls To V'Fone Mobiles
    F=Per Min Calls To Other Mobiles
    G=SMS Charge Per Message

    The first plan has zero cost if you make no calls.

    The second plan has $5 per month cost, but it includes equal call value.

    All rates above are per minute rates and billed per second!

    And there is no flagfall on any call.

    • Thats really good.

  • I wonder if this deal is the reason they killed iSim.
    iSim was much better for small volume users (who else would be on this?).
    no flagfall, no 30-sec blocks, $10 valid 6 months.

    If you want data, I second Exetel.

  • Check out PlanetISP (http://www.planetisp.com.au/mobile.php) They use Vodafone.

    33c/min to any network, any time across Aust. No Flagfall.
    Billed in 1sec increments. No credit expiry to worry about.
    Good reviews in other forums.

    If you want to use Optus' network check out Slimtel.

    • Slimtel use Vodafone too; doesn't seem to have an Optus option either..

    • If you prefer Optus over Vodafone, then look at the plans here:
      http://affinityvision.com.au/exetel/hspa-plans.php

      The WM A plan has double the call costs of the WM B plan, but the WM B plan has a 24 month contract and $10 min. mobile call spend.

      NB: Both of these plans offer HSPA data and they have a $5 access charge for that each month.

      The min. cost [of $5 or $5+$10] and link to 3G data services makes these quite different to the other plans discussed here.

      Another consideration with the Exetel HSPA plans is that you can use a special VoIP account with even lower call rates and have a normal DID in the mix; but using this effectively means that you need a phone capable of WLAN use or 3G that isn't too latent or congested — some use HSPA for VoIP perfectly well, but I've not had the greatest of success here in some locations that I've tried that are important to me.

      So, if you want 3G data and use a relatively low amount of data, these plans are well worth looking at. And if the $10 min. mobile spend is suitable then the 24 month contract option is very good with the low call rates.

      Edit: The special VoIP account could actually be used on another Internet connection, it need not be used over HSPA or even on an Exetel broadband service However, you must use data at least occasionally (and regularly) on the HSPA side of things to ensure the service remains fully and properly active as Exetel's provision of these services relies on a condition stipulated by Optus that mandates data usage (even though the level of data usage can be quite low, ie you must use data at least once every two months)…

  • The Woolies deal actually includes a free SIM as well as $10 off your first recharge.

    Also consider checking out Revolution: 10c/30 sec calls and 15c SMS worldwide. Runs off Vodafone so a much better network. www.revtel.com.au

    BTW - the last 4 phones I've owned aren't even considered to be an 'approved handset' by Woolworths - in order: N-Gage, Nokia 6288, Nokia N95, Blackberry Storm http://www.everydaymobile.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/4977d6004ef…

    • Yeah, that's crazy and it looks like only standard GSM phones are there… but I could be wrong.

  • The Woolies deal actually includes a free SIM as well as $10 off your first recharge.

    No, it doesn't.

    The Woolworths Mobile SIM is never FREE.

    It ALWAYS costs $2.
