Thanks, im tempted as my screen on my 7 Pro is badly cracked ………hmmm
Mine fell onto concrete and shattered the whole display, incredibly annoying when my iPhone friends do the same thing all the time and the phone is fine. Never buying a curved screen again.
Then this is the deal for you - P8 and P8P are flat screen…
@willyroo: Will wait for Pixel 9 to come down further in price. Apparently build quality is a lot better and like the design more. Using my old Xiaomi for now…
@willyroo: I reckon P8 isn't completely flat at all.. if you put on a tempered glass screen protector, there seems to be gap on the edges while P8a is sealed properly with the same TGSP
@amorn: Yes I just recently switched from p8a to p8, using the same TGSP and there is a noticeable gap or so called "halo effect" surrounding the edge of the phone.
But the problem seems to be resolvable using hydrogel film protector, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Overall it's a good phone at this price range IMO.
I have an iPhone with a quality case. Slipped over because someone had m spilt drink on the ground and my iPhone screen in my pocket still cracked from the force. First time I’ve ever had a phone screen crack. Been lucky I guess.
Sounds like you buy a phone just to bang on concrete
Jerry rig guy on YouTube can test things out for you free of charge
@neonlight: I mean, I didn't buy it just to drop it on concrete… Slipped from my hands after I took it off my quad lock mid-ride :(
Code didn't work? :/
Are you an eBay Plus member?
Ohh, nah lol. Thanks :)
Kogan stock, not local stock
After all this time it's still not under $800 so disappointing
The screen is a bit too small. Did these ever come in plus sizes? Or you need the pro for that?
Pro
The screen size should be small. It's a mobile phone.
flat screen tv phone
Dang, any deals on an immobile phone?
Make Phones Small Again!
Not everyone has the same use case, dont gatekeep
I thought 6 inches is average…
That's what she said
I can't believe we're in an age where a 6.2" phone is considered too small…
I used to think anything over 5" was a silly phablet.
It depends on your preferences. Around ten years ago when phablets became a thing the aspect ratios were different. So your big 6 inch phones of that era were bigger than the current 6.2 inch ones now. The current smaller models is your 5 inch one from a decade ago without the bezel. Because screen measurements are diagonal but don’t tell you the actual screen real estate. Using the extremely narrow wide aspect ratios gives the illusion that phones have got bigger, where in reality the same size with the older aspect ratios gave much more screen real estate. A decade ago too there was more choice in different sizes. Now size choice has basically diluted down to the small model and the plus or pro models. No ultra small phones and no massive big crazy phablets like the 6.4 inch thing Sony had that was essentially a tablet with phone calling.
Yeah you actually explained it perfectly. I dont mean to cause this much controversy over the size with my comment.
I use a s21+ and really like the screen for videos and such so its going to be hard to adjust back down to 6.2 and i have massive blue collar like hands…
Yeah, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I don't think I could go back to a 5" phone. Just interesting how things change over time.
I'm confused, so 5 inch phones from a decade ago had more screen real estate despite having a bigger bezel too?
I would have thought newer phones have more screen real estate for the same size phone due to less of a bezel?
@Ice009: No. the opposite.
So your big 6 inch phones of that era were bigger than the current 6.2 inch ones now.
Basically a 5.7" phone from 10 years ago is actually bigger than a 6.2" phone today. Because of a combination of less bezel (meaning the screen goes further to the edge) as well as thinner aspect ratio (because now phone screens go top to bottom, and don't 'unused' space for physical buttons and camera.
See this comparison between the Note 5 and Pixel 8. Bigger nominal screen, but smaller physical size.
@NigelTufnel: Just had a look at that picture. That all makes sense now. Pretty interesting as I would have thought for sure the Pixel 8 was bigger before reading you post and showing me. Wow, amazing how much of a different the physical buttons and bezel made to the overall size of those older models.
Love my 8, it's been flawless
I assume it's become better over time with software updates as well?
Yes and no. Android 15 semi "broke" Android Auto - I've just downloaded the AA 13.5 APK and finally seems to be working properly.
Apart from that it's been superb - the P8 is the Pixel come of age IMO.
tempted to swap to this, my iphone 12 is horrendously slow now, and getting really annoying to use now.
12's should still be going OK, maybe wipe and reinstall it
nah, my battery is at 75% as well
I didn't know people with iPhones were aware you can buy anything other than another another iPhone!
i love all phones tbh, started on samsung, and broke my 21 ultra at the gym and went iphone for a few years, and going to give this a shot
Isn't that battery gate? Just replace the battery with a powerful one.
Most of the better batters are fake labelling and are in fact worse than a real battery of the correct dimensions and its why apple put in the encryption as this faking is widespread from china especialy (its the online shipping from china business model and why genuine is not only better but cheaper to get a genuine one and let apple install it)
my newest apple device is an iphone 12 and it doesn't seem to bad tbh runs pretty well still!
ofc my main is an android tho
yeah it doesn't necessarily run bad, just has it's moments whenever i use the camera, my phone gets locked up for 5 minutes and i cant do anything about nor turn it off, gave it a factory reset and still the same issue
Was happening to me too on some older updates. Try volume up, volume down, power (hold power for 5 seconds). This is a hard reset if the phone gets locked up. So you dont have to wait 5 minutes for it. Yeah i feel ya it was very annoying.
@JOZL: yeah, tried that as well, didn't do anything either, like it made no sense, but i already got my new pixel and i absolutely love it, now i just need a good watch with a good deal..
Not sure if it's true, but a young guy at work was saying to me that some of the older models, whether it be Samsung or Apple, they seem to get worse with newer OS updates. He was saying you shouldn't update the OS. He seems to think they start gimping the phone (decreasing the performance) on purpose so you have to buy a newer model. Not sure if there any truth to that? I sort of dismissed it as my thinking was it could be the hardware of the phone causing it to not perform as well with newer OS updates.
I've currently got a Pixel 7 and so far it's going OK with a couple of OS updates. Prior to that, I have a mid-range Samsung for about 5 years and that got worse and worse, but since it was a low/mid-range model, that might have been due to it not having the hardware specs to handle newer OS updates that well.
Seems pricey for the specs
Cheapest it's been since September.
Any offers for a case?
Don't skimp on cases. Spigen is a really good fit, and the slight bumper pretty much eliminates the risk of cracked screen or rear case damage.
I like this design than pixel "Iphone" 9
I like that this has its own, "Pixel" design language, but at least from the brief amount I have held each, the 9 feels far more premium in build quality.
They should have kept its own design like SS or Sony and still build quality phone without changing to copy boring iphone design
Is the battery still an issue or have software updates fixed it?
Still has issues, although YMMV. The pixel 9 seems to be a much better device, especially the fingerprint scanner.
At least from JB Hi Fi you can return it if the issues are deal breakers.
I've owned a few pixels and never had these battery issue people talk about. I assume it must be only heavy users/gamers that burn through batteries quickly. If you're an average user then this is probably a non-problem.
I'm a fairly light user, so end of day I usually still have 60%+ but certainly did notice it's poor battery life when on holidays when I was using maps / googling / taking photos.. had to use a portable charger. Switching to 4G only helps a lot.
My Pixel 7 has had absolutely garbage battery life from day 1. It's still godawful now over a year later. I've never played a game on this phone and rarely use it heavily through the day.
I have refurb pixel 7 and it lasts more than a day still, at least a year later
My Pixel 7 use to last 2 days of heavy usage, now I get minium a full day - 2 years later
i run grapheneOS on mine and without google play services running my battery lasts about 6 days of pretty light use. with google play services it lasts 2. i normally just swap to an account with play services running if ever i need maps or music in the car and then swap back when i just want it to be able to take calls, photos or be a modem. i get about 4 days per charge this way. it's been a good phone.
Tell me more please!!
grapheneos is a replacement OS for the pixel devices. it's open source, privacy and security focused. I'd say the privacy stuff is a losing battle but your phone doing the data collection is a battery drain so best to leave it to every other device in your life. you can leave your main 'user' on your phone with no google play. it has full phone functionality, a camera app and web browser, few other things. then if you want to run something like spotify or google maps you can just swap to a different account, enter the pin for that account and it runs sandboxed from your main account. swap back when you are done. I also think separating the people who make your phone from the people who make your software is a good way to avoid software patches designed to make your old phone slow so you buy a new phone. it probably isn't for everyone, i think the more you like to use your phone for things other than the most basic tasks, the less likely you are to enjoy the experience and the less drastic the difference in between stock android but the OS is well praised and i don't think i could go back to bloated android. i'm also someone who tries to separate tasks into more devices than having less devices for more so your mileage may vary.
Not OP, but I've been using grapheneos on a refurb Pixel 6P for a year or so - initially wanted to try it, then switched as my main device.
The Google play services compatibility layer is a bit of a game changer, I haven't found an app that doesn't work yet - with the notable exception of NFC payments through google wallet etc. I use a subprofile with play services almost all the time and largely forget I'm running a custom ROM.
The sandbox features are pretty extensive, and if nothing else it's nice to be running very up to date security patches and kernels.
Install is super easy with their webUSB installer, you don't have to be a *nix nerd just to get started.
The grapheneos site has quite extensive documentation on the aims and features of the project.
@srhardy: To be clear, NFC works fine, but the device doesn't pass Play Integrity tests which are required to authorise payments via Google Pay and some other banks/payment systems. So e.g. you can use a loyalty card on Google Wallet via NFC, but not a credit card. I hear that certain banks also have issues with their app due to this, but mine (Macquarie) works fine.
This is basically my one bugbear with the OS, and I can see why it's a dealbreaker for some.
Thanks OP. Been waiting for a good phone for my wife. She'll love this in rose.
May I be your wife please?
Username checks out!
Should I get this or moto g85 for my wife?
Either seem like a fair swap. Aren't you going to miss her?
😜
Heyoooo!
Is the wife still under warranty?
But be careful, there might be a fairly sizeable early termination payment.
Factory reset before terminating
I tried to price match on the Google Store (as I have credit there), but it's out of stock.
Is it worth upgrading from the 7 to the 8?
90hz 1000 nits vs 120hz 1400 nits
6.3" vs 6.2"
Tensor G2 vs Tensor G3
WiFi 6E vs WiFi 7
4355mAh vs 4575 mAh
Rest is very similar, I was considering it too, but probably not worth it IMO
Yeah same. Might wait till the 9 is the same price next year 😂
I did and I am glad I did it. But my requirements could be different to yours. I like the compactness of P8 compared to P7. Also, the fingerprint scanner seems to work well on the P8. Other than that. It is pretty much the same.
Looking to upgrade my LG v30+. The comparison below gives my LG 75/100 and this 77/100. A bit hard to understand why such an expensive and recent phone at $700 would have so little improvements. I am not a phone expert by any stretch though. Any thoughts / advises?
https://www.smartprix.com/mobiles/google_pixel_8_5g_vs_lg_v3…
Those sites are typically pretty useless when it comes to comparison, giving arbitrary algorithmic numbers to things that really can't be compared in that way. An example is that site giving the LG the win on core count purely because they don't have the info for the Pixel for whatever reason (9 cores vs the 8 on the LG), but given all the architectural differences between phone gens, that is not a way to compare them.
That's funny. Upgraded my LG 30+ to a Google 7 last week. It is streets ahead in terms of speed and performance. So 8 is going to be even better. Also technically the V30+ isn't going to have security anymore as it no longer updates so it's another good idea to upgrade and this one should last you a good 5 years if you were happy putting up with the V30+ for so long like me!
Interesting. Mine still serves my needs and I sometimes wonder what need I have to change it. How was yours? Do security updates really matter in practice?
Do security updates really matter in practice?
If you have any sort of sensitive information on your phone, I'd definitely say so.
And FYI those comparison sites don't mean anything - comparing raw numbers on the spec sheet is dumb.
I haven’t been keeping up with the mid range android options these days. Is this a bit of a no brainer for the price? Or are there other options I should be keeping an eye on?
It depends what you are looking for in a phone. If you want small form factor, long term security/software updates, great camera and good battery life, then get this phone.
There are other better phones that have other strengths. But this is hard to beat right now for a mid range phone.
Purchased a pixel 8 from JB 2 days ago for full price. Anyone know if they will refund the difference?
I just spoke to online support and they said they will refund the difference - wow! That's pretty awesome +1 to JB for this
you get about 2 to 4 weeks to get the price difference back
some say 2 weeks some say 3 or 4… every staff say something different and not written anywhere
it's like a hidden rule
confirmed, recieved my refund on the difference this morning!
Or if anyone’s interested, Pixel 8 Pro can be bought under $1k on Mobileciti eBay with code PLUSJAN
