  • Am I the only one who thinks if you're going to spend $500 on a PVR… that it'd at least include a HD tuner?

My parents bought one of these a long while back…. it's a good unit, but the lack of a HD tuner (and twin tuners) are a real drawback. So sometimes I get a call from my mother to record a show on a HD channel for her, now that the stations are showing different content on the SD and HD channels.

  • I am looking for a HD tuner TV recorder. What is the best one out there?

This is not a PVR. It's a DVD recorder with a HDD. I was of the understanding that there is a law preventing the ability to record HD material onto DVD. I could be mistaken but that's the blurb the sales guys use when you ask why it doesn't have a HD tuner built in.

      I beg to disagree. :)

Here's Panasonic's better model, with twin HD tuners, but otherwise the same (250Gb hard drive, DVD burner).

This unit will record HD straight to the hard drive and play back in HD… but can't record HD to DVD as it's too big to fit, so they convert them to an SD equivalent format first. Nothing to do with the law, it's a limitation with the DVD format*. :)

(*happy to be proven wrong though!)
