  • Isn't the practice of bumping up prices during a sale illegal? Guessing this is a loophole because they are not displaying a discounted price themselves, it's eBay that's discounting the purchase amount.

    From ACCC:

Statements such as 'Was $150/Now $100' or '$150 Now $100' are likely to be misleading if products have not been sold at the specified 'before' or 'strike through' prices in a reasonable period immediately before the sale commences.

Such statements are also likely to be misleading if only a limited proportion of a product's sales were at the higher price in the period immediately before the sale commences. The volume or proportion of sales that may result in such statements being misleading will depend on the circumstances of each case.

The length of the period will depend on factors such as:

the type of product or market involved
the usual frequency of price changes.

If a business has a policy or practice of discounting goods when not on sale and uses two-price advertising in relation to sale periods, there is a significant risk that the use of two-price advertising will involve conduct that is misleading. The business would be representing to consumers that they will make a particular saving if they purchase the item during the sale period, when this is not necessarily the case.

    • ACCC? Really? You think they're going to do anything about it??

      • Not really liking how so many commenters jumping to using force so easily. Yes they are dishonest people, they said it was $150 even though it was never at any point 150. They are scumbags, don't buy from them. But don't be equally a scumbag by using force? I can visit any number of online sites where it's marketed as BIG price discount, when in honest it isn't even a discount. Just don't be dumb, discuss the deals, do our research and don't fall for it.

        • Yes, we know and just wont buy, but non-OzB's will see the ad on eBay and probably will.
So the sellers will keep doing it, and these promotions will be pointless.
In the end, we miss out on the bargain, and that's what we're here for ;)

And no, I know the ACCC is useless. Maybe this is one for Today Tonight, hehe..

    • Guessing this is a loophole because they are not displaying a discounted price themselves, it's eBay that's discounting the purchase amount

You answered your own question. I'm sure this will be it.

      • eBay should crack down on these guy. If eBay cares about their customer, otherwise eBay look likes they sided with the stores.

    • It's common for "Sale" prices to expire on a particular day, then they advertise a "% off" sale starting the very next day. Legal, but shitty way to do business.

      • The items that I was following didn't have any sale of $off. They were regular prices

  • +2

Useless. Everything has been jacked up. No sale.

  • +3

    LOLWUT everything has increased!

  • +4

confirmed, all Dicksmith products have increased by 5% since yesterday. woweee

    • +1

I am sure some items increased more than 5%.

    • copy and pasted your own comment from first page lol

      • And still provided no evidence. Check the purchase history for a guide and make your choice based on fact. I've looked at a dozen products on the DSE ebay site and only one had a higher price than previously. If the price has been jacked up don't buy - unless it's still a bargain of course.

  • i do know its EOFY and all, but are we expecting these select vendors to 'up' their prices, or stick to RRP, to diminish the effect of the 20% discount…. ? anyone care to say….

    • whoops… should read ALL comments here before posting my thoughts… :-P

  • this deal has way too many upvotes when the prices are being increased to compensate for this 'deal'.
    consumerism at its finest.

  • +4

Grr just tried to change to a neg.. wont let me!

What's the point of a 20% sale if the prices are going to be raised?

ACCC might like to hear about this pretty sure i read it before misleading prices or something?

    Galaxy S5 Aus Stock

    Excellent price for AUS Stock.

    Moto G 8GB

    $199 + $5 shipping - down to $163.20

    • I reckon, on the Big Day the Galaxy will be at $899.99, and the Moto G will be upped to $219.99.

    • Moto G is now $234

      • now $191 delivered using the code provided it stays that price

    • i was lucky enough to get the moto G at $199 in a tgg store this morning.
Staff said it was a one day only price, beating a dick smith sale

  • +9

Do these idiot retailers really think we are that stupid to not notice a price increase? WE ARE OZBARGAIN!!

    • We should rename the deal from Big Brand Frenzy to Big Spend Frenzy.

    • Not us, but they are counting on the general public who don't really check prices out/ keep tabs on prices, but see '20% off whoa better buy something quick' to not notice.

  • This was showing at $32 as of this morning, but now it is $50!
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251507319548?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA…

    • Check purchase history or Google cache.
      $49.98 is normal price.

    • revision today was:

      26-Jun-14 12:54:29 AEST

      Description
      Quantity
      Buy It Now Price
      Postage Terms

      • Yes. They revised it back to the price it was 2 days ago which is the normal price they've been selling it at for many months.

If someone wanted to get that drive for cheap they should have jumped on it when it was marked down.

Lately Dick Smith has been having special prices on a lot of products and those prices never last more than a day or 2 (in some cases only hours) so if you see something which is already reduced by more than 20% then it's probably better to get it now as that price will most likely not last til Sunday.

  • +1

Just because it is a 20% off sale it doesn't actually mean we have to buy off them, we can find bargains elsewhere

    • yes a 20% off token in itself is rather small, but couple it with a EOFY sale item and Pow! bargain

The more often I come back to read this thread the more I feel like this deal is a waste of time.

Does this deal get the award for getting the most votes but not living up to expectations?

  • Anyone in the know able to point out some headphones under the $100 mark that are pretty good bang for buck.

I'm not an audiophile. Biggest things I'm after are volume and a strong connection point so that they don't go the way of the ear buds I've bought in the past?

These 'headphones' are considered good bang for buck. Though I'd be careful who you buy them from. I and many others have bought them for around $100 delivered from Amazon, when on special.

If you look for them on eBay make sure they are from a reputable seller.

There are or were fakes going around.

  • +1

Also need to add the Quiksilver store to the list, it is listed in the T & Cs. Great for me as I need to buy hubby a 4:3 wetsuit!

  • I cannot get myself to +1 this one after reading all the posts about prices magically increasing. But thanks for posting. It needed to be posted.

Moto G was $199 now $234 as indicated. I have proof. This should be illegal.

    • Yes, this definitely had to be posted.
Perhaps we can keep these retailers accountable

      • +1

TGG moto g was no sale price on ebay. There was nothing to indicate this was a sale.

        • I think the price was a pretty good indication, but I guess you needed the word SALE to appear somewhere.

Let's take a look at price history for the Moto G

          15/05 Price dropped from $238 to $218
          20/05 Price increased from $218 to $238
          27/05 Price dropped from $238 to $235
          10/06 Price increased from $235 to $238
          24/06 Price dropped from $238 to $199
          26/06 Price increased from $199 to $234

I think that pretty clearly shows that prices changing is nothing new. It's actually very common.

        • There's been some wild accusations thrown about, some probably valid, most are just trash talk. There's a new paradigm in retail sales involving regular targeted sales followed sometimes by an everything discounted by x% sale. I've seen whingers complain that a product was cheaper during the targeted sale but went back to normal price (less x%) during the general sale.

      • A valid point in general Kamoi, Dick Smith had some gear on sale that has reverted but there are definitely other things that are being pumped up.

    • +1

How about the deal from last week? Didn't some of the items of those deals increase as well? The gift cards?

      • Let's use that example. I think gifte was the seller yes?

Let's suppose they ran out of stock, on a Sunday, so somebody had to actually do some work to find more stock and get it back in their eBay store quickly to meet demand, perhaps some work was done on a Sunday to achieve this? Of course it was. Possibly happened several times.

Is it not reasonable for whoever did this extra unplanned work to be paid at applicable rates? Therefore one possible reason for an increase in the sale price per unit?

        • That's fine. DS increased their prices last time too and there were no negs.

Why the negs this time around. Where were the negs last time for this same reason? Please, double standards

And how do you KNOW gifte don't work on Sundays? Please don't assume anything.

  • If anyone cares. I do not know much about this

NEW Motorola Moto G Dual Sim XT1033 (16GB, Black) UNLOCKED Kogan $237

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Motorola-Moto-G-Dual-Sim-XT10…

  • soooo.. what's stopping us from purchasing items now, then doing the 'checkoiut' part on sunday? you technically have up to 7 days to pay, right?

    • the Redemption code must be entered before you commit

      • ohhh so if I win an auction that ends on sunday I will not get to use the discount? Thanks for letting me know

      • you sure? it doesn't state that in the T&Cs. all is says is this (point 9):

"To redeem this offer, enter the redemption code into the redemption code box during the checkout process."

        • You'll find that all of the sellers in this promo have immediate paypal payment required to enter into a sale agreement.

        • I stand corrected… all but Catch of the Day

Prices go up and down all the time. Pick any item and look at revisions. You'll generally see the price on each item being adjusted at least once a week.

You missed a special price that ran from 24/06 - 26/06. How is that reason to neg?

I don't hear anyone complaining about the prices which decreased yesterday, but I'm sure we'll hear about it tomorrow when they go back to their normal prices.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150374?page=3#comment-2078…

      • I guess the question is, with the 20% off sale, did most prices go up? If so, then I don't consider the argument prices go up and down. Why all of a sudden most of the prices went up?

        • The thing is that it's not happening all of the sudden. Look at the Moto G for example.

          15/05 Price dropped from $238 to $218
          20/05 Price increased from $218 to $238
          27/05 Price dropped from $238 to $235
          10/06 Price increased from $235 to $238
          24/06 Price dropped from $238 to $199
          26/06 Price increased from $199 to $234

The prices aren't just going up either. Many are cheaper today compared to yesterday. Reduced prices generally don't last more than a few days, but people here only seem to be focusing on the ones which went back up to their normal price.

If you look at the purchase history you can see what they have usually sold for. I've yet to see a single item which has increased above it's normal price. They have just gone back to their normal price after the special price ended.

      Nightshade

Seems the redemption code is CBIGTREAT, according to the eBay facebook page, but it isn't active yet.

edit: and now they've edited their post. see http://imgur.com/D0H36F4

  • What do you guys think about this asus laptop? Worth it after the 20% discount ?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-F550LD-XO290H-F550-15-6-Core…

Brings the price to $599.2 excluding shipping.

  • i think this is a good deal, i am turning my HTPC in the living room into a decent gaming PC.
so i need 2 xbox 360 controller and the final price including delivery comes down to $28 (which the same price as preowned at ebgames)

    Xbox 360 controller + delivery $50
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261454135743

    minus the 20% ebay deal = $40
    then
    minus 30% off from Microsoft = $28
    https://www.microsoft.com.au/cashback/

to connect this wireless controller, you will need to buy a receiver for your computer like this
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271524416499?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA…

    • Damn that Dick Smith. How dare they reduce their price on that today. Super dodgy. Might have to ring ACCC.

    • +1

have you read M$ T&C, xbox accessories not included in this cashback promotion.

      • This, I think the PC version (adapter included) has cashback but it a different SKU

      • I havent read the t&c but I just checked the ms cashback and xbox 360 controller is included.

        • +1

that's a different sku like marlict said, which DSE does not stock.

  • +1

TGG has now pulled stock of two coffee machines I was watching, yesterday they had ' more than 10' and still for sale on their own website.

Thought this sale was too good to be true :(

  • Boo, was going to purchase a vacuum for my mum and the listing's gone from TGG as of this morning. Was still there when I checked last night.

  • +2

The item I had my eye on exactly 2 days ago has gone from $955 to $999 to $1,013.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261510882497

There is enough proof to neg.

  • -4

Just Buy It Now on things before the price goes up further then pay for them on Sunday using the coupon.

  • I was looking at dryers. The Bad Guys have removed all but 3 overnight! Neg…

    • I mentioned this on Ebays FB page and they deleted my comment but now TGG have replaced the lost dryers on their eBay listing. I'm going to call that a win

  • DSE has reduced its PS4 price to $529…!

    • +3

Surely not. According to Undertaker everything on the DSE ebay shop has risen by 5%

  • Seems The Good Guys have restored most of the airons that disappeared. Perhaps the same applies to the Dysons.

    • That's a good news, but look around, don't assume they have the best price even after the 20% / $200 off.
I was looking at Panasonic CS/CU-E24PKR TGG $1609.00 after discount, but Masters is very happy to price beat Appliance Central by 10% end up $1431 delivered.

      • +1

I was going to get a Wireless AC modem, but it seems their prices with the 20% discount are more than most ebay retailers. What a rip

  • Wow DSE amplified indoor antenna was ~$16 now $60 - that's just sad

    • My past evaluation of these things is that they are no better then a cheap indoor antenna.

      • no it really depends on where you live. an amplified antenna can make the difference between getting some channels and also giving a stronger signal with no breakups.

        • Garbage in, garbage out…
Amplification is most effective for signal loss down the cable. Otherwise you're just amplifying noise. Digital signals have error correction, just finding a better indoor antenna that gets that little more of the signal will be better than an amplified one in my opinion.

        • just tested it again by cutting power to the antenna and channels started to break up.
also neighbours could not get a decent signal until they tried amped
in other cases it doesnt help but for others it works out 100%
best option is to buy try and take back if useless rather than spend up big on a roof antenna

  • +1

prolly not fair to neg the ebay deal, ebay is doing the right thing and giving 20% off (they chip in the difference)
its the companies like DSE and kogan that's dodgy!

we must all band together and post links on items which are extremely good value that they have forgot to jack the price up!

    • Yep, so dodge they are. Happens all the time. Not just online but instore

    • +1

No eBay won't suck up the 20% loss on their own. It's very likely the retailer have to contribute a big part of it. And that explain why they jacking up the price.
