The Story (speculation on my behalf)

One could assume that there is a story behind this as I have seen this on eBay in other countries recently and my assumption is that it’s an effort to drive top line sales and bring the stock price back up due to eBay's challenges in 2014:

Ebay’s stock price was recently at a 52 week low at US$48.06 and has been on a consistent decline since 2014. There are several factors that have influenced this (not in order of impact):

  1. The recent security issue/alerts;
  2. Departure of some key executives;
  3. The infighting with investor Carl Icahn;
  4. Alibaba IPO around the corner with Alibaba posing a real threat to Ebay;
  5. Amazon consistent strength and expansion (they’ll be here next year!);
(perhaps 4&5 should have Australian retail worried too!)
  6. Google Search algorithm changes resulting in lower rankings for ebay listings;
  7. Shut down of eBay Now - same day service;
  8. Some other undisclosed events (speculation).

Either way, I’m happy to support them this weekend and I’ll be buying up on Sunday !!!

The Instructions

  1. Proceed to Ebay Checkout Page: Checkout: Review order
  2. Enter coupon code in redemption code box (bottom right) and press apply
  3. Press Continue and pay with paypal
  4. Verify in the paypal screen/system that the discount was applied before you complete your order.

Hint: If you are buying multiple items then make sure the currencies of the items are the same because you will only get one shot at this coupon.

Please let us know what you are going to buy and share your bargains below please.

  • Hmmm, it'll be interesting to see how popular this deal will turn out.

  • +6
    • May not be possible according the webpage you mentioned, see 3rd one below.
Helpful tips for ensuring cashback works for you
      * Click on the Go To Store buttons and the store website will open in a new window.
      * Make sure you complete your purchase without opening any other websites.
      * If you use a coupon code that is not listed on this site, rewards may not be payable.
      * Rewards are payable on eligible purchases not including freight, delivery and GST.
      * Cashback may not be payable if you pay by gift card or if you purchase a gift card.
      * Cashback will not be earned if the goods or services are cancelled or returned.
      * Cashback may take up to 7 days to appear in your rewards account.

      • I think Cash Rewards should work with this coupon because its a publicly available coupon, mostly these type of coupons work with cashback.

    • I think that site is getting OzBargained. Another reason why it might not be a good idea :-)

  • So they're essentially coughing up 2.6% themselves, so effectively all the sold items fee earnings (12.4%) and additional 2.6% is what they're contributing effectively, hardly a big loss to them, good deal nonetheless.

  • Nice post!

  • +3

I received a 25% off discount (max $100 off) valid till 30th June.

    • Is it by email?

      • +5

Yes, received yesterday by email. Someone else mentioned they received the same offer too.

        • Have you guys not bought anything from ebay for a long time? They are probably trying to lure you back.

        • They might be trying to shut me up, got my 25% discount. lol

        • Yes, had an active account that is now dormant

        • +1

Thanks so much for saying this, just checked my email and I received the 25% coupon code as well!

For what it's worth I'm an active purchaser on ebay, in fact my last transaction was on the same day I received the coupon code so don't think the code was only for inactive accounts.

        • Did they say why you are getting the code?

        • The email just says a 'little thank you from ebay just for you'

        • Yes and no thanks to the rest of you…..

    • +4

this is annoying. I'm an active ebay user and didn't receive the 25% off coupon, but my colleague who is equally active on ebay received his yesterday. wtf ??!?!

      • yeah i didn't get any :(

  • Lokking forward to use it.

  • Been waiting for a deal anywhere on a specific DSLR camera, will buy one with this voucher if I'm able.

So to clarify, does the seller have to be an Aussie seller, or can they be from anywhere, as long as you make the purchase through the ebay.com.au site?

  • +1

About time eBay give something to the buyers, tired of their high fees.

    • +6

Buyers don't pay any fees. The seller does. I'm not sure what you're tired of.

      • Typical IQ of a Crowded House lover. Nothing comes for free. If the seller pays fees, they raise their prices to cover them….

        • Doesn't seem that way to me. I've never seen an item sold on ebay for more expensive than RRP. It's most often cheaper than anywhere else.

Them $1 items from HK are too rounded a figure to be adjusted for ebay charges.

  • 15% > 13% ebay + PayPal fee combined for non ebay store sellers. The difference of 2% is their marketing expense before eofy ( save 30% off that 2%). Still not too bad.

  • Good potential bargain. But at this stage it is only a huge attention gatherer for ebay's site which is the intended marketing goal. I will only up vote after a successful transaction. Could be a big time waster for a lot of people as the coupon will run out very fast.

  • Now to figure out to what to buy!

  • +3

So if OP's speculations about stock price have any merit the real bargain is to buy up ebay shares before Sunday and then sell them after the sale when there is a spike…

  • +2

Remember to use your virgin velocity card when making your purchase!

  • +1

Good bargain. I hope eBay lose a crap load of money.

    • +1

They won't. The discount is being funded by the sellers. They will lose some margin though, but they won't be out of pocket.

  • don't forget to include all teh listing fees from buyers - ebay would not do this and lose money. plus they are obviously hoping people spend more than $666 so the discount effectively lowers

  • Lol, eBay actually wouldn't lose a lot of money.
They will only really lose around 5% since they are taking 10% in commissions from the sellers. lol.

  • +9

I have predicted the gradual death of eBay as I am one of many dissatisfy clients. I have stop listing my products on their site because of their expensive fee and double dipping with PayPal. A few months ago I have sold a few items. One of the purchaser lied that he has not received my delivery. I provided all the evidence to PayPal that I have sent the item away. Despite this PayPal penalised me. PayPal uses a debt collector threatening me to repaid the money they have refunded to the buyer. I have told them to piss off otherwise I would sue them if they dirty my credibility. They have dropped the case and cancelled my PayPal account. I did not mind that as I was trying to do that myself. The item was a highly spec phone which I have sold for around $10. Never again will I use eBay to deal with dishonest buyers and a company who displayed no common sense in believing that I have ripping the buyer off for $10. Lol. I have spent around $10,000 this year alone on Amazon because it business model is sounds. I am giving away my stuffs to family and friends. I have donated some to the Salvo. I am not going to waste my time with Ebay or Gumtree. I am avoiding PayPal when possible. I have paid via amazon a few times whenever the vendor offers it.

    • What if you offerred pick up? Where is the evidence that the seller has delivered the goods to the buyer? How does Paypal manage a dispute in this regards? Sellers are disadvantaged!

      • NEVER offer PayPal if someone is picking up items! You will have no proof that the buyer actually picked it up and if they reverse the transaction the buyer will win!

        • +3

You can't not offer Paypal, unfortunately.

        • -1

Yes but state clearly in the listing that COD only for pick ups and if the pay by paypal just refund the transaction.

      • +2

I never thought of it that way. Next time I offer pickup, I will make sure there is a video recording.

    • -1

I hear ya, Ebay has become ridiculous for honest and private sellers. I read somewhere about 15% fees, i think since everyone is paying with Paypal these days it's around 25% altogether.

      • +1

        It's close to 12%.

    • +2

To donkeykong: for $10, might be better to just pay PayPal back. I understand you feel the buyer got the item for free and PayPal did not rule fairly. However, PayPal would add to your financial record that you owe them money. It is true that you can tell the financial organisation the story when you apply for a loan, but it is still a hassle for $10.

The general rules for selling on eBay (for me): (1) Use a postage method which provides tracking information if possible. (2) Items posted using postage method without tracking ID are the ones I am prepared to fully refund in the worst case situation.

Selling items on eBay isn't as easy as people think (and it gets harder for new sellers). Unexpected things do happen. You do have to sell a few items to make it worthwhile (because you do need the funds for the unexpected cases). Bottom line is a seller does have obligations. Selling on eBay does not always end once you posted the item to the buyer.

      • +2

I shipped the item via Australian Post with Tracking number. I have paid for that service. It was during the Christmas rush and the delivery man did not get a signature from this fellow. I have sent off 3 items that month and all with tracking number. The first fellow received it with tracking confirmation. The second fellow received it (he was honest) but Australian Post failed to get his signature. The 3rd fellow I am sure have received (dishonest) but Australian Post failed to get him to sign for the item. I know for that fact that Australian Post tend to leave the item as my front gate without my signature on many occasions when I have bought item from eBay and a tracking number being provided. I have contacted Australian Post about this matter and ACCC was also informed as I was not please that they have not performed their service which I have paid for. Australian Post denied responsibility but willing to repaid the postage cost which to me is an admission of liability. I did not agree but they have rudely sent me a refund. They claim the extra tracking number service is not an insurance for the missing item. But I have told them that 2nd fellow did indeed received the item but the tracking status remain "in transit". The reason I felt the 3rd fellow was dishonest was that he did not contact me for a few weeks and I was concern and dumb enough to ask whether he had received the item as the tracking status was also "in transit". He was dissatisfy with me as he offered to pick the item up but I specifically did not offer this in the eBay listing and so I refuse to accept his offer.

As with PayPal. It is their decision to refund the amount back to the buyer. I have provided the necessary evidence that I have posted the item out to the buyer. I know I am in the right. Paypal uses a debt collector (ARL) to pursue the amount which could only buy 2-3 cups of coffees. I have even wasted a few dollar and time which costs me more than the amount I supposedly owe them to defend my standing. I won't be bullied into submission as I have done no wrong here.

Search on the web you will finds similar horror stories and there is a website which give you some ideas to legally fight back. Overall, I think it worth to stand up against these international company. They are a bunch of big bulliers. I don't think their business model is going to win against the like of Amazon.

        • +1

          True.
I got scammed by some dodgy turd with the exact same MO.
My item remained perpetually "in transit". It just usually means the postie failed to scan at delivery for any number of reasons. The receiver,I am certain received the item. His communication was cagey to say the least.
You just get stuck-to by the system sometimes, despite jumping all the hoops, even paying extra for tracked goods. You STILL get screwed over by PayPal.
Turd of a system weighted against honest sellers.

    • -2

Hear, hear. Sold something for $160.

      Fees:

      eBay $17.60
      PayPal $4.60
      Yolo fee $5

      lulz

    • -2

Without buyer trust eBay doesn't exist, which is why they give buyers the benefit of the doubt. It's not hard to protect yourself as a seller, just send items registered mail or insist customers sign for receipt if picking up.

      • +1

Yeah but with Aussie post RIPOFF charges you pay massive delivery fees plus another $2.95 for signature on delivery - then buyers sook the postage cost is too high.

        • or worse yet, people win your auctions and then try and haggle postage because they are already paying a "sizeable price" like I should eat into my profits..

  • +2

Thinking of getting a LG G3 phone, with the discount, it will bring the price down to $616.89. But I don't really need another phone now.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LG-G3-F400L-4G-LTE-32GB-White-Sma…

  • Thanks OP.

  • Does the $50 purchase price include or exclude shipping?

    • Also wondering if multiple items can be added to bring the minimum spend up to 50 (which is presumably after discount)

      • From past experience, I would say no. It would be a discount off one item.

        • Forgot to add, also multiples of the same item are ok.

  • +1

Are gift cards covered under Buyer Protection? The PayPal user agreement lists "quasi-cash items such as gift cards, pre-paid cards or deal vouchers" among items ineligible for it.

  • +1

I don't know what to buy lol

  • +4

Thanks OP. wait for all the harvey norman alike companies to end all listing on the 21st and relist them with 10-15% increase .

    • If they were smart this would be the time to do their own discount so people can stack the deals.
Imagine Good guys doing the 30% off deal again at the same time. The impulse purchases would be insane.

  • +1

Oh yes - that guitar will be mine …

  • Looking for 4tb hard disks.

  • Does the item have to be purchased on Sunday? Or can I buy something today and pay for it with PayPal on Sunday, use the coupon code, and take advantage?

    • No, and How do you know that you are getting coupon?

  • can we buy items on Dick smith ebay store with 20% off + 15% off from ebay? that would be 35%off right?

    • +1

DS sale ends tonight so no.

    • +1

      20% Ends June 19

    • if you buy something for $100 that is 20% off you pay $80 then get 15% off the $80 which equals $68 so you end up getting 32% off. I am not certain how the stacking works or if you can. I haven't read all the T&C.

    • A lot of the items say "Enter code CDSH20 at checkout for 20% off ends 22/6/14". So I assume you can stack

  • Fantastic!

  • Shame it is limited to a max discount of $100. Looking at buying some big ticket items but the limit reduces the effective discount

  • This deal is going to break the + record.

  • +10

    well that explains a lot,

eBay sucks, seller are abandoning eBay in drones.

    • +1

lol, Nice pun. Drones instead of droves… I have images of a heap of Chinese people ridding drones.

PS. not being racist - just most stuff on ebay is sold from China.

    • where are they going though?

      • They are packing bag and setting up with own website

        paying another evil, google

        • I just took down half our listing on eBay

eBay great for buyer, if every seller honest and sell genuine products.

Otherwise, we end up competing with fakes.

But my biggest gripe with these morons, is their poor customer service, i feel like i'm talking to a robot everytime i call.

  • +1

Man, the EFTPOS and gift card sellers are going to get slammed HARD.

    • +2

Someone mentioned above that PayPal protection does not apply to those.

      • -2

        why does that matter?

        • +6

what do you do if you don't receive it?

    • brilliant idea for sellers

      • so… someone will sell heaps of $200 gift cards for $195 on sunday, and then dissapear off the face of the earth? thats… evil….

  • +1

    Excellent write up, thanks OP!

  • +1

Definitely in need of a new phone, but not sure whether to go loose on the G3 or wait :/

  • +1

Can't you just buy all the stuff you want today and then wait till Sunday and pay with the code (If you get one of course)???

EDIT: I just read the Ts & Cs and no you can't…. must make purchase and payment during the offer period.

  • +21

Brace yourself (Ebay), Ozbargain is coming.

  • Does 1 transaction = 1 item? Can I have 20 items in my cart and the discount will be applied to all these items or only 1 item that is over $50?

    • +1

1 item (over $50), or multiples of the same item. Not multiple items.

      • +1

1 item (over $50), or multiples of the same item. Not multiple items.

Well if you can "Add to basket", before the 60,000 coupons are redeemed (..if eBay can handle the wrath of OzBargainers), then you COULD get multiple items, but it has to be from the same seller.

  • +13

PERHAPS if ebay stopped ripping off its sellers with outragous fees, listing fees, selling and then paypal fees, people would use them

Till then a rip-off, die ebay die

    • +2

This deal won't save eBay. It is like a pain killer which could only masked their pain but not the problem itself.

  • I had a targeted 10% coupon around xmas time and I wasted it on a shonky ebayer. Be careful guys, Ebay will not allow you to use the coupon for a second time, no matter the situation.
