TOMTOM VIA225 5" Navigator for $111.75 DELIVERED from DSE EOFYS FRENZY

60

Got email from DSE about the DSE EOFYS FRENZY sales, which has 25% off on selected TOMTOM GPS.

The Tomtom VIA225 price looks good at $111.75 with free delivery. Also this model comes with life time map update.

I personally prefer this "old" model to the Go series. Bought a go series a few months back for my Melbourne trip, and decided to refund it once back in Sydeny. Trip guide had lots of mistake in the city as I heared the Go series use different map system. And also the interface does not show enough information compared to the "old" tomtoms.

  • In the market for a 5" GPS as well.. Was looking at the Go 50 for 189 - 30 amex cash back from HN.. Is this better?

    • +1

The traffic function on the Go50 requires your phone to be connected via Bluetooth at all times - it uses the data connection to get the traffic information. This means that your phone cant then connect to another bluetooth device (handsfree or car audio) at the same time.

      • Yes I read that somewhere.. It tethers for 15 seconds every 2 mins. Apart from tethering, the device feels and looks much better.

  • Via 260 for the same price has Bluetooth as well.

    • i have via280, the bluetooth is unusable… unless you have the device right next to your face

the only useful feature is Speak & Go

      • Would consider it only for the speak and go function. Hate leaning forward to type into the GPS.

    • It does not title "Free life time map update"

      • You get the free life time maps when you register the device here by 30 June 2014:

        https://www.tomtompromotion.com/Maps/au/Register.aspx

        From the website:

  • genuine question - is there any difference between these devices vs android+GPS apps?

    • Dedicated car GPS's have external GPS antennaes, non-relective and bright screens, louder speakers, suction cup mounts and higher sensitivity meaning they can deal with weaker signals. The end result is that your GPS co-ordinates are calculated using more satellites which improves accuracy.

Mobile phones don't have an external GPS antennae. They pick up less satellites. Have reflective and poorly lit screens, tiny speakers, finicky windscreen mounts.

Using my mobile phone as a GPS usually stresses me out because the battery life is unusable. My HTC phone running the iGo app lasts about 30 minutes before the phone goes flat (max volume, max brightness, voice directions on, 2D mode). Mines only good for a 15 minute return trip. When I tested my phone using my sports motorcycle (ie. no roof to get in the way of the signal) from Sydney City to Chatswood, I barely made it to Chatswood. The tall city buildings worsened the accuracy so it also gave less time to warn before the corners.

For navigation purposes you'll save stress and money buying a dedicated car GPS which has unlimited maps than similar money on an Android app + quality car mount + power adapter + SD card + internet connection.
