3 cell bat? How long does it will last for?

    • -1

Thinking the exact same thing, someone please answer, very curious myself. Lol

      • +8

you guys are really that hopeless?

"Battery life is respectable considering the configuration and the bright, Full HD screen. In our rundown test, in which we disable power management, enable Wi-Fi, maximise screen brightness, and loop a video file, the 43 Watt-hour battery lasted 3hr 57min. There is a longer-lasting 58 Watt-hour battery available, too."

there's this wonderful invention by a company called google, you should try googling it

        • +1 ;)

        • +3

also in 2014, they still put in a 10/100 nic

may as well leave it off or include a dongle

also most likely a 1x1 hopeless wlan but that wouldnt matter to the target audience

        • That's impressive. I have a Dell laptop with slower specs than this (Sandy Bridge), lower res screen, and it's a 6 cell battery, I have no wifi, use less than half brightness, and I get about 2 hours from it. I'm not even playing video either. Just keeping a txt document open while I play a game on console.

I've had a few laptops, never had any lasting 4 hours no matter how many cells. I'm truly amazed.

        • I don't think Target sell them.

        • The XPS 13 gets just over 8 hours on 25% brightness either browsing / documenting

        • Sandy bridge was kinda a notorious power hog.

        • +1

Did you look for the one review that gave it longer battery life? Most reviews put it at around 3 hours absolute maximum, less in 'real world' tests. Given the battery output that's all you'd reasonably expect too.

It's let down badly by the 10/100 ethernet and 1mp webcam as well…

        • it'll vary greatly if you have an older battery, or bigger screen. or the higher wattage CPUs…. lots of things really.
my laptop i have at work (lenovo x220) used to give me ~6 hours of usable battery life at full power, ie on a long haul flight i could comfortably watch 2 movies on it. that was 2 years ago when it was new, nowadays it struggles to see the end of the first movie, usually 1.5-2hours tops.

  • +1

Paid 1.3k for the 15 7537 series a few months ago with exact same specs but a i7-4500 processor. This is great value to be honest.

    • +8

      Exact same, but different.

      • Yeah, but nah.

    • the 7537 has a better build and feel to it.
      i reckon it's worth that $300.

  • +1

Sound like a good deal, but the battery is a bit concern.

  • +1

Note that it is not a backlit keyboard according to the reviews on the Dell website.

    • Well if i bought one and it had no backlit keyboard as stated i would demand a refund

      • +3

Just a heads up to avoid disappointment, time wasting and unnecessary friction with a refund/exchange. The first couple reviews online say the same thing.

PCWorld AU: "The keyboard is also meant to be backlit (it's shown on Dell's Web site as being backlit), but our test unit came with a keyboard that didn't have a backlight. We can only guess that the laptop looks better with the backlit keyboard — ours looked rather boring without it, and we missed having it for our nighttime typing sessions."

Would be happy to call Dell up tomorrow and double check, unless someone does it first :)

        • +1

I've called up as well as spoken with an online representative, and they've confirmed a backlit keyboard. Happy days!

    • +1

I have one of these on hand and it does have a backlit keyboard. The brightness is not adjustable though.

  • +1

    no optical drive

    • +19

      It's 2014.

      • -2

That's irrelevant. I prefer my laptop to have optical drive to use cloud etc.

        • +29

have optical drive to use cloud etc

          What?

        • +14

you don't have to download the internet anymore, you can store it on the cloud

        • +8

But how do we access the cloud without an optical drive?

        • +5

Good question. There's always floppies I guess.

        • -5

you know what they say in response to WHAT…

  • very nice, add in an msata SSD boot drive for $100 and it will be quite something.

    • -1

That's if it has mSATA, which frustratingly, is not a safe assumption for Dells.

      • oh, unlike you I wasn't assuming anything; this model has one that can be used as a boot drive. cheers!

        • Our latitude 5440 have it but under certain configurations it can't be used,so just becareful… Always best to check… :)

        • Can I ask how you found this out? I've looked at the user manual and the specifications, and this model seems to only have one 2.5" HDD slot.

  • No longer there?

  • Do Dell really need a 3000, 5000 and 7000 series of their crappo consumer line, each with different sizes and configs? Probably not, but this is still cheap.

  • A solid performer for the price; will play most new-ish games on low settings at decent FPS.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M265.109394.0.htm…

Older games should be honcho dory

  • can you add an optical drive to it?

    • You can just get portable optical drive

      • +3

        And use double sided tape.

  • +1

dat battery plus dat full HD

  • +1

Can it come w' Win 7 instead?

  • Damn, just bought the previous dell deal. Knew this would happen…. Don't suppose I can cancel it, this seems much better

    • Not really IMHO.

      Cons:
This cpu i7-4510u has passmark 3.9k vs i5-3340M having 4.1k (higher is better). Although, i7 has less TDP/heat & power requirement which is a plus http://www.passmark.com/cpubenchmark/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Inte…

Also, 3 cell battery vs latitude 6 cell (or in my case 9 cell 3yr warranty battery for $965)

4 level backlight for latitude against a fixed for inspiron

better HDD - SSD for latitude against standard platter

slow LAN connection for inspiron & no e-sata

1Yr Carry-In Service after Remote Diagnosis for this vs. 3yr NBD

no trackstick & fingerpoint reader on inspiron

quality business grade build & service vs consumer grade

      win 7 pro vs. win 8.1 (non-pro)

no express card slot on inspiron

DVD drive in latitude vs drive-less (not a biggie though)

      Pros:
16gb RAM vs 8GB on latitude

AC wireless card vs 6300 ultimate (which is not bad as well)

AMD Radeon™ HD R7 M265 2GB DDR3 vs intel 4000 (which is more than enough for general use unless you want a good gaming laptop in which case opt for a laptop with dedicated video card)

My 2 cents > It was a very good deal. I've ordered one latitude & wouldn't cancel for inspiron nor horize deal

  • Is it better than the last one ?? We missed it and now am looking at this. Why is it better?

  • look out, this one has one of those 'useless' touchscreens and 'horrible' Windows 8 that all the prehistoric trolls praised the absence of in the last Dell deal.

    • Touch screens are usually glossy which means it is full of reflections and doubles as a mirror.

    • Someone disagreeing with you /= troll m8

  • Link is dead. Can't find it on the site…

  • Any thoughts on how this compares value wise to the Yoga 2 Pro at $1199?
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-2-in-1-13-3-touch-screen-…

I feel like the nicer screen and build quality of the Yoga (I'd prefer a top end Lenovo over a low-mid range Dell I think) makes it worth the couple of hundred more. I assume the Yoga from Bestbuy wouldn't have AU warranty so have to take that into consideration.

    • +1

Are you using a shipping forwarder to get this from the US? They are in different user markets really. The Dell is a lot heavier with generally more tankier specs like 16GB RAM, larger Hard Drive, and so is more of a desktop replacement which you can take around if required (the battery also wouldn't last as long). Yoga 2 Pro is a lot lighter at 1.4kg, higher resolution, has a convertible touch screen mode.

In terms of value, I guess you could say you're getting more bang for your buck on the Dell, but at the same time keep in mind they are kind of in different markets. It just really depends what you want to use it for.

  • this or the horize deal for $900

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/148245

  • Horize has no dedicated graphics

  • …which probably means better battery

  • Dell appears gone now anyway

  • Any feedback? I want to use photoshop smoothly. I don't hog a lot of memory but it can't (when I run scripts/actions). Can this laptop handle 10 opened photoshop files at once without any slow downs?

    • If you stuck a SSD into it - it would have no problem.

  • Good price. Dick smith has got a similar spec Toshiba for about the same price.

  • Which Toshiba ? Can't find one with fhd

  • Which Toshiba has fhd ?

  • I will try to find the toshiba. The toshiba also has 4gb video and blu-ray drive. It isnt on the site but i saw it in store yesterday.
    It was here http://www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/toshiba-satell…

Model is p50t a0ee, find it on the Toshiba site as its a current model, the only one toshiba has better has a 4k screen Dick has it for $1029 I think. ( I am on an iPad and can't get the cached version of the dick smith link). They have 20% off. Rrp was $1799, down to $1300, now just over $1000.

    • yeh i was thinking about the Kirabook, actually quite a good deal and is considerably lighter and more portable in terms of battery life compared to the Dell. Obviously much more expensive though and specs more geared in a portable sense, so you probably won't get as much raw computing power

      • The Kira book isn't 15 inch is it?( don't want a small screen)

  • Thanks a lot PVA.im in store looking at the toshiba now. Just noticed the dell has interest free…
I wonder which would be better for 3d gaming on my passive 42" 60hz TV…

    • I dropped into another Dick Smith today as it was near Woolies that i needed to go to. They had one that looks exactly the same except I think lower specs (2gb video and DVD and only HD screen), it was $987 and the model was something like P50t-B008.
Better to pay only a couple more dollars for the other Toshiba or the Dell.

  • So is the i7u CPU roughly equivalent to an i3m?

The only good thing about this notebook seems to be the FHD IPS touch screen.

    • If you read this link posted above
      http://www.passmark.com/cpubenchmark/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Inte…

The speed is also playing a big part in the performance comparison. The only i7-4510U listed in this list is 2GHz and maximum 3.1GHz.

After seeing this long list of processors now I realize it's not easy to judge the performance of the computer you buy, by just looking at which grade processor it is as in old days. They have somehow made it so hard to compare the processors now for general public.

  • I'm wanting a 1080p laptop for doing some photoshop/vid editing, that can do okay with games too.

Thinking of spending the extra $200 on the GIGABYTE P15F v2 (with the GTX 840m).

Is there going to be a lot of difference?

  • Is there any brick and motar store in here that we can buy this Dell for the same price??

    • Not without a price match. But JB sells Dell stuff. Try them.

      • Thanks for the info. But I managed to get a quote from Dell to buy this as part of salary sacrifice.

  • Anyone who bought it from Dell, was you able to negotiate to add in any thing like warranty etc in to the price?

    • It looks like this is a fixed config and not many changes are allowed in the web site compared to other Dell laptops. I too thought of upgrading the battery to 3 cell before ordering and couldn't find a way. So I had a chat with Dell support and confirmed that you can't change battery with this deal.

  • So is this speedy enough with that processor? Looking at benchmarks it doesn't look that swift for an i7, but if it's just for business application you'd expect that with 16GB RAM and that hybrid HDD it should be quick enough shouldn't it?

Or better off getting something else?

  • Did anyone receive your laptops yet? Normally they ship them in abt 3 days when they have stocks in Sydney.

  • CAN DELL SERVICE BE SO BAD. I owned few Dells and was happy with their service until this time.

My wife ordered this laptop on early Monday morning. Still nothing happened and for the inquiries they've replied that they will give a order number end of day today. Can you imagine a tech company takes 4 full business days to issue an order number.

In the mean time one of her friend also ordered this laptop and they've now sent her a modified quotation with AU$ 1,586.20

Being a big company can they do this while the discounted price is still valid and publicly available in their web site it self.

    • Dell sent an email couple of days back saying that the order was sent to fulfilment. When we ask for a tracking number for the order on Thursday 18th we were told that they will be sending the number by the end of today Friday 19th. However this evening close to the close of business I was sent an email stating that the original quotation was invalid and the new price is $1582. Even at that time Dell web site was showing the same sale price. Then I rang them and asked why can't they honour their own quotation. The support person told that I have to call the person who sent that quotation and ask that department to work on it as she can not give it for that price. The same happened for 2 others who ordered this from y work place and put the work address for delivery.

No where else to go from here. I am not sure if I can call ACCC on this and open a case. I have a valid quotation sent on Monday 16th early morning and the purchase order was raised straight away. I have the emails confirmations sent by Dell. Then the email trail on saying that they can't give for that price and the new quote they issues today (Friday 19) around lunch time.

The price is valid even at this time while I am writing this. I will order it again and pay from credit card now and see what happens.

  • I'm still unsure about this, but it is still on sale (maybe just until 12am for all of Australia?).

Is this such an amazing deal? I'm in no rush

    • Well I bought myself some time by buying it from Dell, and selecting to pay via bank deposit. Should have some time to think.

Just deciding if the Gigabyte P15F is worth paying the extra $188 for. Thoughts?

      • Yes, true it's not an amazing deal as the Dell ebay store sells similar specs with only difference of having the RAM 8GB but better battery for much cheaper than this. It's little bit thicker. But I can live with that for $300 cheaper than this if you buy on Sunday.
It's unbelievable how a reputed company like Dell has employees who sell the same item at the same time at different pricing. When I called the lady who sent me emails told me to go and buy from the one who gave me the quotation for lower price. I told her that I am dealing with a company but not individuals and the price is still valid on Dell web site and I can even complain to ACCC. She said the only help she can do it to sell it for 1586 which is 60% higher than the advertised price on Dell public site.
To my surprise the manager of that lady sent me another email in the night informing me that they are fulfilling the order again. I don't know if I should trust that because I've received the same email with same wording twice before over this week.
The only worry I have is while getting this run around from Dell the 13inch Macbook Air deal was sold out at Myer. They are totally different species, but I was looking at buying that in case if I miss this one.

        • Thanks- I forgot Dell had an eBay presence.

So comparing both on eBay, the P15F (i7 4710MQ, 15.6" 1920x1080, 8GB ram, 1TB, GTX 850M) on Sunday, can be picked up for $1152.

For $250 extra, the only benefit I see is a more highly ranked GPU (40th vs Dell's 137th)

          Thoughts?

      • How many days did they give you to pay for the invoice?

        • Not sure, cancelled my order because of the eBay sale. Can buy it for $898 if you wait until Sunday (10am-11pm)

        • Why didn't you keep the current order till Sunday and see how it goes and then cancel the current once you order from ebay? That way you won't loose anything but guarantee that you'll get one way or the other.

  • The spec looks ok - can't see much out there better. I'm assuming with their 14 day "satisfaction guarantee", if you are not happy you can send back? I'm looking to get something in before EOFY and this seems to meet my needs. If something comes up from now and till then, i could just send the Dell lappie back!

  • +1

Ordered this yesterday for Dad at 10am and arrived today in Melbourne at 1pm. Spent the morning removing the small amount of bloatware (quite impressive really, only two or three things to remove).

Quite the solid performer and a reasonable weight for the price.

  • +1

Just bought this from their Ebay store plus the additional $100 off from ebay. Win!

    • What did you spend at the end? By the time ebay had the sale this deal was over so didn't the price went back to it's original RRP by that time?

      • I can tell you it was $899 (including discount) on Sunday at Dell's eBay store, for some reason the discount lasted longer over there than on their website. 20 were sold in total before is showed "out of stock" and hasn't been listed again since.

        • Yup. Was watching it on ebay store with 10+ stock remaining throughout the entire weekend until Sunday. The impulse from seeing the discount from dell, the extra $100 off and that there suddenly was only the last unit left was too hard to resist so I jumped.

  • I ordered this from this deal for $999 and still waiting for Dell to ship it to Melbourne. I ordered on 16th Monday morning and it's been almost 2 weeks now. During this time Dell said yes they are sending it then again said no they can't honor the price and sent me a new price of $1600. Again said ok and shipping again. Then blame me saying where did you get this wrong quote. (The quote came from Dell and while their website publicly show the discounted price) The person him self could go online and see the price and see the name of the Dell representative who sent the quote to me. He himself could request for a quote and would get the same price for next 2-3 days until that special price lasted. Some how finally said they are expediting the order and shipping. I was sent this email few times and don't know which one to believe. Given the nightmare happened with Dell, I asked to send me the invoice to convince my self that they sent the item that I ordered and for the price I ordered it for. However they turned that down again and said I will only get the invoice after the laptop is delivered. The tracking shows that it's with local courier from last morning. I am now waiting until I see the laptop to find out if that's what I ordered and what the price is.

I wonder if I could forward all these emails to show the big drama happened with Dell to one of Dell manages who really care about their customer service. This is when customers try to buy from them not the after sales service. I have bought few Dells and was very happy with them before. Apparently Dell is one of the rare Computer Hardware companies who have a very good positive NPS score. I wonder if their perspective of sales and service has complete changed now.

  • rmamila, I would tell a Dell supervisor (get their name), that unless they honour the deal today you will be contacting the relevant Australian authorities - as Aussie consumer law protects us from this sort of nonsense.

I'm just not sure who that is off hand, but if someone could tell us on here we should all do it. It usually gets quick results.

    • That's ACCC. I mentioned to the Dell person over the phone that they can't sell it for 60% higher price while the same item is advertised on their web site for less and the deal is currently valid. She didn't care about that. However later they sent emails saying that they shipped the item and expedited the shipping as well.

I am still waiting for the shipment after 2 weeks. Dell really messed up my order.

  • For tomorrow it'll be 20 days past after I ordered from Dell. I have an order number, shipment details and so many emails on the Drama from Dell. Still waiting for the delivery. dell says they have it shipped and the Web site says it's with courier for past 5 days.
