Hi All

These have been released yesterday. They use a Marvell 88SS9189 controller and the new 16nm NAND flash in the 256GB and 512GB versions. (89% more energy efficient than a standard hard drive)

I know they are RRP from Crucial but these prices would be much less than the Australian RRP

Great for us who need an SSD and cant wait for a price drop

  • Sequential Write: 300/500MB/s - Sequential Read: 550MB/s

  • Every MX100 includes a download of Acronis True Image 2014 OEM Edition PC backup and recovery which has a RRP of $50 from Acronis

30/6: 512GB Now $209

  • would be much less than the Australian RRP

What is the price here ?

    • +3

haven't been announced yet. Just released in the US. We should have them in Australia net few weeks i say

But seeing that Aussie RRP for the M500 was higher than the US RRP when they were first released, i reckon this will be the same

        • +10

An announcement for you. A bargain for others .

If u find a cheaper 16nm SSD with a sandforce controller , let me know

        • +2

Just to nitpick, I believe these continue to use a Marvell controller not SandForce as you mentioned.

        • +2

I believe these continue to use a Marvell controller

You're correct, uses the same Marvell 88SS9189 that's in the M550.

        • +1

I have to agree with JV, we don't need speculative bargains.
You should know that better than others.

on the other hand, thanks for the heads up.

        • +5

i don't think there is any speculation that US RRP is less than Aus RRP when it comes to these types of products.

        • +4

I also agree with JV on this also. This is no a bargain because other USA sites are selling them cheaper. Being such a new item its bound to get cheaper.

Here is one example of it being cheaper http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/121804/tigerdirect---crucial…

-512GB Crucial MX100 Series 2.5" SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (CT512MX100SSD1)
          $219.99 - $20 w/ promo code QPN129388 = $199.99 with free shipping

-256GB Crucial MX100 Series 2.5" SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (CT256MX100SSD1)
          $109.99 - $10 w/ promo code DNT129385 = $99.99 with free shipping

-128GB Crucial MX100 Series 2.5" SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (CT128MX100SSD1)
          $79.99 - $10 with promo code IKH129382 = $69.99 with free shipping

Tiger do ship internationally, but you would need to call them to organise it and im guessing the shipping costs is nowhere as good as Amazon. This is just an example of this model of hdd selling cheaper the Amazon.

PS. its the same price (ex shiping) as Newegg

        • well how much is shipping to sydney? is that even a trusted website like amazon?

        • Tigerdirect will charge you ridiculous shipping charges.

Its not cheaper if your paying the difference in postage

And yes, i got the email yesterday from tigerdirect which prompted me to check Amazon.

Plus you would never get Amazons Customer service from TigerDirect

        • thanks, ill just get it from amazon.

        • The prices I listed from tiger is just a reference that amazon isn't the cheapest since this new model is so new and it's bound to go down.

        • -1

The prices I listed from tiger is just a reference that amazon isn't the cheapest

When you list an bargain here on ozbargain, we look at it including postage

You can classify say X item is $10 with $50 shipping a bargain when another store is selling the same item for $30 with $6 shipping

          Its common sense

        • Amazon are selling the drives at RRP. The same price as what Crucial are selling them for http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ssd/series/MX100

You are missing the point that me n others are saying. We are saying that because the drive is new, the prices listed on Amazon now is not a bargain. This is reflected in other USA sites (eg. tigerdirect n newegg) selling these drives for less then Amazon (ext shipping here) and the prices are bound to go down.

Just look at how cheap shoppingexpress are selling them for even for an AUS stock (even though not as cheap as the USA shops).

  • It may be worth waiting to see how these are priced on Aussie markets, before you pull the trigger on an overseas Amazon purchase.

    • +2

If u need it, no harm in ordering.

I ordered a 256gb one cause I need it for a new laptop and it was the cheapest one I could find online

    • how long do you recon till msy starts selling these?

  • Just want to put in a good word for Arconis Backup & Recovery. It's really good in my opinion :)

Also these prices are USD, no?

  • I assume this is rated below the m550? Specs look similar though

    • Yeah, way to confuse people.

No doubt these will get cheaper with time like the rest of Crucial's products. Unless you need it now..

  • +1

It says only the 256 and 512 are 16nm.

  • Reviews have the MX100 doing better than the M550 in many test(which is unexpected)

  • sandforce controller??
If that is true, I won't buy.

    • +3

Nope that's incorrect thankfully, it uses the Marvell 88SS9189

      http://www.anandtech.com/show/8066/crucial-mx100-256gb-512gb…

      • +1

Hopefully a mod or a power user will update this to correct that its not using the Sandforce controller.

    • +2

There's nothing wrong with sandforce controllers. There used to be a problem but it was fixed a couple of years ago.

      • One thing wrong - Sandforce-based drives are heavily reliant on compression for their performance and lifespan, which makes them a bad option for encrypted data that doesn't use the drive's internal encryption (e.g. TrueCrypt, DiskCryptor, or PGP Disk volumes).

        • I wouldn't call it something "wrong", merely an aspect to take into consideration (one which I don't think would matter to most users).

To be fair, ericlgq didn't state why he wouldn't choose them, however I'd say in the vast majority of cases where people complain about sandforce controllers it's because of the reliability issue that was fixed a long time ago, and hence isn't relevant.

  • Crazy that I bought a 64gb one for $139 just 2 years ago.

  • +1

A very good review by Anandtech:
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/8066/crucial-mx100-256gb-512gb…

I built an HTPC/Steam box last weekend. I've never worked with and/or built a PC with an SSD before and installed the older 240GB M500 which popped my SSD cherry. All I can say is I love the M500 and SSDs in general. If these MX100's are "the MX100's task is to replace the M500 and it does that brilliantly" then that's awesome. I've ordered an Evo from Amazon for a 2009 Macbook Pro, looking at another 1TB SSD for my main rig later on when DC/Haswell-E becomes available. Love the great value from Amazon, I've had most major parts purchases from Amazon this year so far and will continue to use them.

  • The 256GB model certainly seems to be the sweet spot price wise on this deal.

  • Bought the 256GB - good price esp with the software, cheaper /GB than the M500. Thanks EC. Another good review at http://www.storagereview.com/crucial_mx100_ssd_review.

  • Thanks mate got some for work :)

  • How do these compare to an 840 Evo?

  • +1

on a kinda unrelated note (but relevant) if you use the 28degrees card to buy parts in AU, lets say MSY, you could claim the price drop within 6 months right? I believe you guys have done it many times before?

    • That is correct, as long as you opt in to the shopper protection program when you sign up or at any time via the website then you are covered for price drops for 6 months.

  • Stupid question, I have never ordered off Amazon.

If the price says "free shipping" that applies to Australia too? Always?

    Thanks

    • +2

There is no free shipping to Australia. That free shipping only applies to shipping to USA addresses.

  • No wonder Amazon was having clearance sales on the Crucial M500 recently.

  • sigh

I'll buy another one in addition to the M500 I bought last week…

  • the samsung evo 120gb was cheaper than this last week

  • mx100 256gb or
MSY sandisk ultra plus 256gb or
    msy samsung evo 840 120g $94 $????

  • 512GB for $230! Have I missed out on something or is that super cheap?

    • +1

That's $230 USD which = to $247.70 AUD. And yes it seems the price of 512GB SSD is going down.

By the way the OP quotes $224 USD for the 512GB SSD but it's actually $224.99 USD which = when you round up the cent to $225 USD. It might as well be $225 USD. The OP is out by a dollar USD in the quoting.

Rounding up to $225 + $6 delivery USD makes it then $248.80 AUD delivered. That's before any credit card currency conversion fee is factored in.

    • thats not even the cheapest. Other USA sites are selling it for sub $200

      • Like what other sites are selling the Crucial MX100 512GB SSD for under $200 USD?. Do they ship to Australia?.

        • Yes they do, but you need to contact they. Its in my post up top.

        • Tigerdirect will charge you ridiculous shipping charges.

Its not cheaper if your paying the difference in postage

      • +1

Looks like the waiting game continues then…

        • -2

yup. dont waste your money rushing out n buying it when its bound to go down in price

  • this or the sandisk from msy? the price is roughly the same, this is $3.70 cheaper but the delivery time; is it worth it over msy sandisk? this one is a better performer right?

    • +4

This review benchmarking has the Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB SSD just slightly outperforming the Crucial MX100 512GB SSD by a small amount in read speed testing. But when it comes to write speed the Crucial MX100 512GB SSD outperforms the Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB SSD. So it looks like the MX100 is faster in write speed than the Sandisk Ultra Plus. Make what you want from those results.

      http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2014/06/02/crucial-…

But overall i suggest buying the Crucial MX100 as it has superior write speed than the Sandisk Ultra Plus and it also comes with Acronis True Image 2014 OEM as a free bonus.

      • +1

damn that just made my decision harder..
i wish the 840 evo 250gb was the same price as these would make my decision alot easier:P

      • Also note that the 256GB MX100 has a much lower write speed compare to 512GB

    • MSY is better buy because you get local warranty and let's face it once you get to comparing SSD speeds it just becomes a pissing content, they are both going to be bloody fast and a huge improvement over whatever HDD you have. Even the slowest SSD will outperform your HDD like 3x over. I'd say go with the Sandisk simply because you can get it same day no waiting, looking at the benchmarks linked there is a very marginal speed difference and you won't have to ship it to the USA if it has a fault.

      • Yes i suppose if you need the SSD now then the Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB SSD from MSY is a no brainer.

  • +1

Now that the Crucial MX100 is out. I wonder if there's going to be considerably price slashing on the current Crucial M500 stock since this replaces that?.

I mean at the moment the Crucial MX100 256GB and Crucial M500 240GB are the same price on Amazon. Why would they buy the older drive M500 240GB for $109.99 USD when you can buy the brand new released MX100 256GB which is faster and for the same price. I'm guessing that there's going to be some M500 price slashing on Amazon soon.

    • I got the 256GB M500 during an Amazon sale a month or two ago as they were selling them cheap with the MX100 right around the corner, it's sitting in my room somewhere (under clothes I think?). I expect there will be similar priced clearance sales when they get sufficient stock of the MX100.

      • Same here. Must have got my M500 240GB on that same sale.

  • +1

got myself the 256GB one. My first ssd.

    • M500 was my first SSD :) you'll never go back … hehehe

    • My first SSD was a OCZ Vertex II 60GB. That piece of rubbish didn't last long until it broke down.

Second was some OCZ 120 GB SSD which i accidentally broke myself some how shorting out the electronics from a bad molex to sata power extension cable. Third was an Intel 320 series 120GB SSD which i'm now using in a laptop. Now using a Crucial M500 240GB SSD as my fourth SSD which i got from Amazon recently.

      • I've had 2 OCZ Vertex II drives in my SSD arsenal and never had a problem. Both still going strong and they must be 3 years old now. They use SATA2 so speed maxes out around 270 read and 250 write but that's still fast compared to standard HDD.

        • Rich i believe the one i got was known to be hit n miss … (well it was known way after i bought it) hehehe

      • i got a small 60gig OCZ after the crucial for a net-book, died in less than a month .. total rubbish, got crucial in my work desktop, for our work laptops we usually use Samsung's or crucial.. couple of intels around as well but just too pricey .. :) so far no issue's with either Samsung or crucial … never touching ocz.. lol

  • +2

Well I told you guys to wait…

Aussie stock MX100 256 GB going for $129 delivered.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147169

    • Fairly certain you can cancel amazon orders that have not yet been picked

    • No need to neg because their is a better price.

This was best price before SE posted their deal

      • +1

It was RRP, so it never was a real bargain. Now I am glad someone negged it to warn others that they might even get Aussie stock cheaper…

        • +6

          its a matter of opinion.

im still loyal to Amazon because of their customer support.

          • When my crossfade LP headphones started playing up, they sent me a new pair for free and told me to keep/donate the old one.

          • When i was sent the wrong color of runners, they sent me a new pair and told me to keep the old one.

          • I bought $150 leather gloves on special for $35. The size chart wasnt accurate so they were slightly larger on my hands. Quick email to Amazon, they refunded me the $35 and told me to keep them.

          • I also bought a $50 wallet on special for $15 and didnt like the quality. Again sent an email and was refunded.

          • I bought a Blender from Amazon Germany for 30 euro's. 11 month later, it started smoking. Chat with CS and they refunded the Blender and cost of delivery.

Show me an Aussie retailer with such awesome customer support.

        • +2

UPDATE Since the 256GB is sold out at SSE I've revoked my neg vote.

I hardly ever neg deals. You can look through my profile. I have probably only negged 3 or 4 times in my 5 year membership of Ozbargain.

This time I used a neg to draw attention to my post, because I knew Aussie prices may be similar. No hard feelings Easternculture, I love your posts, so keep calm and post on!

        • fair enough , no offence taken

        • +2

The MX100 256GB is back in stock at SE again. They managed to get some more stock.

I assume the demand was higher than they anticipated so they must have grabbed more stock from out the back.

        • But glad to see great prices in Australia from local retailers.

    • +1

Wow nice prices from SE. Once you factor in the CC currency conversion fee which would be charged if bought from Amazon (unless using a conversion fee card) it's about the same price or not far from it on that deal from Shoppingexpress for that australian stock than it is from Amazon. Free delivery from Shoppingexpress too. Get your orders in from Shoppingexpress if you want it delivered a lot faster rather than being shipped from overseas. Though Shoppingexpress has limited stock.

Edit: MX100 256GB SSD seems to be now sold out from Shoppingexpress. Oh well.

  • +1

Hey peopele's. SE has the MX100 256GB SSD currently back in stock. Thought i'd let you know. It's on again!

Edit: out of stock again. Damn the demand for the 256GB SSD must be high. I think SE must have underestimated the demand.

  • Not a bargain considering the Amazon prices are RRP which is the same price as what Crucial sell them for http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ssd/series/MX100 . Prices are bound to go down since this model is so new. Don't make a mistake and jump the gun.

    • Same thing happened when Nexus 4 first came out, but I think it was perfectly fine regardless of its RRP since it was good value in comparison to its rivals.

      • +3

But Nexus was available quite expensive locally. Also note that the prices here are in USD. So expect to pay a little more + charges ( if your CC charge it).

See the same drives in the post here:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147169
So not a deal with RRP prices I recon. A little more price with local warranty and less waiting time is a huge plus. Support local business.

        • +3

          Agree.

The price in the title is misleading because it doesn't state what currency. So when you convert the price of the 512gb drive it comes to approx $249AUS + credit card charges. Ppl are better off buying from ShoppingExpress for a few AUD more to get the local warranty, local seller & quicker delivery.

Since Tigerdirect & Newegg are both selling it to the US customers at a lower price its only a matter of time until Amazon will sell this model cheaper of match the price of their competitors.

  • Noob question, but how can u buy from amazon? That's for US residents only right? I couldn't complete the checkout process because it won't accept an australian address.

    • Were you trying to send it to a P.O. Box? If so, try a street address.

  • Amazon have dropped the price of the 128GB to $69 and 256GB to $99

    • The 256GB SSD is showing as $109.99 USD.

      • +1

change to Amazon as the seller

        • +1

I see. Thanks. Pity about the usually ships within 2-4 weeks. Must be sold out.

    • The 512 is $219 now, and the 128 is $79 again. The 256 is still $99, but it's out of stock for a few weeks now.

  • Weird/Good BlitzR isnt hating anymore since Amazon Dropped their prices :D

  • +1

2 - 4 weeks? damn too long… i probably forgotten about the purchase by the time it gets delivered… :(

    • I'd say it's because it's a brand new release and stock was limited. Crucial must have underestimated what the demand was going to be.

  • This is an easy buy then for me. Cheaper than SE which is now out of stock, as well as the fact that I won't need it until finals is over :)

  • 256GB SSD is in stock now.

I bought the 256GB SSD two days ago and it is already shipped today. Thanks OP.

  • Just bought two 512GB. Thanks OP
