Was literally just about to post this. if anyone knows a work around, let us know!
Don't understand why this is an issue. You signup with PayPal, use the coupon, if you're not happy delete your VPS before the credits expire so they never charge your Paypal.
$10 is good for two months with their cheapest $5/month plan.
The issue is, some of us have had bad experience with free trials, where they continue charging the CC even after you cancel the service. Then you need to waste time sorting things out.
Use Paypal then, once done remove any subscription from DigitalOcean
I have been using digital ocean for several months now to run a VPS. I originally used a $10 coupon like this one, and after adding my CC, it was very easy to remove it.
I did, however, re-add my CC because I wanted to keep using the service.
I agree, been using them for over 12 months now.
they're quite reliable. not to mention it was not that difficult to remove the credit card info.
@OP — your website (seek.estate) is hosted on Digital Ocean's servers in Singapore? Would you like to share your experience?
Its been awesome. I'm on the $20 plan/VPS.
My site https://seek.estate receives about 1000 page views a day and I haven't noticed any slowdown.
Some people who use it for just a basic Wordpress site on the $10/plan have 100,000 page views a day without slowdown.
Cloud hosting is the way of the future.
Also if you are used to cPanel hosting, but want a free alternative for VPS look up webuzo.
I have actually been hosting websites on VPS since early 2006. Currently have credit on Digital Ocean (from the last $10 promo) but never got a chance to deploy one.
How's their Singapore DC though? Bad ping time from my home ADSL (with Exetel) as it bounces to Tokyo before getting to Singapore (~230ms from Sydney), but okay with my other connections (~145ms from Sydney).
Totally unrelated usage, but I host a teamspeak 3 server on their $5/month plan. My server is in their Singapore DC and I've had numerous occasions with 20+ people on the server using high quality voice transmission (upwards of 5-10 talking at once). No noticeable lag or issues, even with ~250 ping from my (bad) connection.
It would be a good place for hosting if you had users from all over the world. OzBargain, for example, has mostly Australian users so you'd probably want to stick with AU hosting, but Singapore is a pretty good spot to give equally reasonable ping to AU/EU/Asia, and average ping to USA.
Disregarding their ping and such, their uptime is excellent, see this picture of my TS uptime :) (It would be about 2x that long, but I had to reboot it once to install something unrelated).
Wouldn't mind trying this out to see how an SSD VPS performs. But their order page requires a CC or paypal payment registration first…
